  • Getting to town, up to 4 points. Walk to the centre in 20 minutes or less: 4. Longer walk: 3. Walk or short ride, or tender: 2. Transport needed: 1.
  • Return safety, up to 4 points. Low risk of missing the ship on a normal day on your own: 4. Medium (shuttles, buses, queues): 2. High (the usual day out depends on trains, long transfers or tender queues with known gaps): 0.
  • Time in town, up to 2 points. How early you must leave the centre to be back on board in time, counted back from all-aboard. 75 minutes or less: 2. Up to 105 minutes: 1. More: 0.

Inputs come from each port's PortTrip guide, which lists its sources: port authorities, transport operators and official attraction sites, checked in October 2026. Berths change from call to call; the score reflects the usual berth for large ships. No port, cruise line or tour operator pays to be included or ranked.

Common questions

What is the PortTrip Cruise Port Index?

A ranking of 172 cruise ports by how easy they are to do on your own, without a ship excursion. Each port gets a score out of 10 for getting to town, return safety and time in town, based on PortTrip guides checked against official sources in October 2026.

Which cruise port is easiest to do on your own?

The top of the index is ports where the ship docks in walking distance of the centre, the return carries little risk and you can stay in town until about 75 minutes before all-aboard. See the table for the current order.

Which cruise ports are hardest without an excursion?

Ports where the town is far away (Rome from Civitavecchia, Florence from Livorno), where you tender in and queue to get back (Santorini), or where the usual day out depends on trains with long gaps.

How is the score calculated?

Getting to town is worth up to 4 points, return safety up to 4 and time in town up to 2. The full method is on this page. No port pays to be listed.
