Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerShips dock right next to Katakolo village, so you walk ashore. Ancient Olympia is about 34 km inland: the Hellenic Train service costs €10 return, takes 45–52 minutes and runs Monday to Saturday only, with one useful morning departure. If you miss the early-afternoon return train, leave Olympia by taxi by 15:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard.

Status and sourcesKatakolo is a one-street fishing village that exists, for most cruise passengers, as the doorway to Ancient Olympia, the sanctuary where the ancient Games were held. The site is 34 km inland and the whole day turns on transport: a single morning train on weekdays, private coaches and taxis waiting at the gate, and nothing on Sundays except road transport. Olympia itself is a flat, open field of ruins with little shade, so heat matters more than distance. If you stay in Katakolo, the day is short, slow and walkable: waterfront tavernas, a free museum of ancient technology and a beach a short taxi ride away.
Walkable? Yes · about 10 min (0.5 km)
The village is flat and small, about three blocks deep, and starts at the port gate. Ancient Olympia, 34 km away, is not walkable; you need the train, a coach or a taxi.
Where your ship docks
On foot (Katakolo village)
Free5–10 min to the waterfront tavernas
Walk out of the port gate and along the seafront. The railway station is about 5 minutes away on the main road.
Hellenic Train, Katakolo–Pyrgos–Olympia
€10 return (€5 each way) (2026)About 45–52 min, with a stop in Pyrgos
Runs Monday to Saturday only; there is no Sunday train. There is one useful morning departure from Katakolo (reported at 09:15 in summer 2026) and an early-afternoon return. Buy tickets on the platform, on board from the conductor, online, in the Hellenic Train app or by phone (14511). Olympia station is a few minutes' walk from the museum and site. Check the timetable on hellenictrain.gr for your date before you sail, because times change between seasons.
Private coach transfer to Olympia
About €15 return (2024); prices vary by operatorAbout 35 min
Sellers stand outside the port gate; coaches pick up and drop off there. Grekaland Travel and Vlachopoulos Tours are two operators named by readers in 2025. You return on the coach you went out on, at its fixed time, so check the return time before paying. Pre-book on a Sunday, when sellers may not turn up.
Taxi
Agree the fare before you leaveAbout 30–45 min to Olympia
Taxis wait near the terminal. For Olympia, agree a round-trip price, the waiting time and the return time in advance. Waiting time is charged, so a taxi day costs much more than the train. Rideshare apps are not a realistic option here.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Take the early-afternoon train back from Olympia. If you miss it, leave Olympia by taxi no later than 15:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard. From Katakolo village, start back 60 minutes before all-aboard.
There is no second train to fall back on: the return is a single early-afternoon departure, and the journey takes 45–52 minutes. By road the drive is 30–45 minutes, but you also need time to find a taxi in Olympia and to clear the port gate. Private coaches return only at their fixed times.
If you're running late
Ask a café or the museum ticket desk in Olympia to call a taxi; there is no app alternative. If you will miss all-aboard, phone the port agent number on your daily programme immediately.

On a Monday to Saturday call, the train makes Olympia an easy and cheap DIY trip, and a downloaded guide covers what a ship's guide would tell you. A ship tour is worth it on a Sunday, when there is no train, on a short call where the train's fixed return does not fit, or if you want a guide to explain a site that is mostly foundations and fallen columns. The Mercouri Estate wine visit is also easier as a ship tour, because without a booking the estate may only sell you a glass.

Katakolo and Olympia are low-crime places. The main hazards are heat and sun at the open site, and uneven ground among the ruins. The waterfront road is used by coaches and taxis on ship days, so watch for traffic at the port gate. In autumn 2025 the Greek authorities stepped up security at Katakolo during protests aimed at one specific ship; check your ship's daily programme for any local notice.
Scams and tourist traps
Emergency number: 112
Crowds
Several ships can call on the same day, and coach groups reach Olympia from mid-morning. The stadium tunnel and the Temple of Zeus are the busiest spots. Go to the open-air site first and leave the museum for the middle of the day, when the site is hottest. Katakolo village empties in the late afternoon once day visitors leave. Greece charges cruise passengers a per-person fee at each port (€5 in the summer high season at ports other than Santorini and Mykonos in 2025); most lines include it in the fare or bill it on board.
Accessibility
The pier, the port gate and the village waterfront are flat. Katakolo station is an unstaffed halt with an island platform; boarding the train may involve a step. In Olympia, the Archaeological Museum has a ramp, a lift and an accessible toilet. The archaeological site itself is level but large, with gravel, dirt paths, tree roots and uneven stone; a wheelchair user will need a strong companion or will see only part of it. A taxi or ship's coach is the easier way to reach Olympia for anyone with limited mobility.
If it rains
Rain is rare in summer but common in late autumn and winter. Olympia is still worth visiting in rain: spend more time in the Archaeological Museum and the smaller Olympic Games museum, both covered by the same ticket. If you stay in Katakolo, use the free Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology and a long taverna lunch.

Your whole cruise, planned like this
The day plan above assumes a 17:30 all-aboard. Your ship's times will differ, and so will every other stop. Pro builds the plan from your ship's real times: a timed day in Katakolon and every other port, a leave-by time for each stop, and a Plan B if you run late. Ultimate adds a live leave-by countdown from where you are on the day. Every plan uses the same checked facts as this guide. Nothing is made up.
