Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerNafplio is a tender port: ships anchor in the Argolic Gulf and tenders land at a pier on the Old Town waterfront, a short walk from Syntagma Square. The town, Akronafplia and Arvanitia beach are on foot, Palamidi is a taxi ride (about €10) or a long stair climb, and Mycenae and Epidaurus need a tour or a hired car. Be in the tender queue 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Where people get it wrong: Timing the day from the 17:00 sailing time instead of all-aboard and forgetting the 90-minute tender buffer.
The last tender often leaves before all-aboard. Check the time in your daily programme.

Status and sourcesNafplio's Old Town of Venetian and neoclassical streets starts a few minutes from the tender pier. Three fortifications frame the town: Palamidi on its 216 m hill, Akronafplia on the headland and the small island castle of Bourtzi in the harbour. Many ships here leave at 17:00 or 18:00, so the day is shorter than it looks once the tender is counted. The main choice is between a full day in town and a timed road trip to Mycenae, Tiryns or Epidaurus.
Walkable? Yes · about 15 min
Most Old Town sights are within 15 minutes' walk of the tender pier. Palamidi is a long, exposed stair climb or about 4 km by road. Arvanitia beach is about 15 minutes' walk from Syntagma Square. Mycenae, Tiryns and Epidaurus are not walkable.

Agree the sites, the price and the return time before you leave. A Mycenae and Tiryns morning fits an eight-hour call; adding Epidaurus leaves little margin.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be in the tender queue 90 minutes before all-aboard (15:00 for a 16:30 all-aboard). Leave Palamidi and Arvanitia beach 2 hours before all-aboard, Tiryns 1 hour 45 minutes before, Mycenae 2 hours 40 minutes before and Epidaurus 2 hours 50 minutes before.
Tenders run from one pier and queues build in the last two hours. Palamidi's stairs are long and steep and taxis at the gate are not guaranteed, so leave margin. From the ancient sites, the road time plus the tender buffer is what counts; a late start at the site is the usual cause of trouble.
If you're running late
From anywhere in town a taxi can reach the waterfront quickly. If you are delayed on the road from Mycenae or Epidaurus, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
Ships anchor offshore and tender passengers to a pier on the Old Town waterfront, a short walk from the promenade and Syntagma Square. Taxis wait by the pier and a tourist information centre is a short walk away. Allow for queues in the last two hours before all-aboard. Greece charges a cruise passenger fee for each passenger who goes ashore at ports other than Santorini and Mykonos: €5 from June to September, €3 in April, May and October, €1 from November to March (2026). It is charged once per port, to your onboard account, and only if you leave the ship.

Nafplio itself, Palamidi and Akronafplia need no tour: everything starts at the tender pier. The ship's tour is worth it for Mycenae and Epidaurus together, especially on a short call or for solo travellers, because a hired car costs much the same split between fewer people and the return to the tender is your responsibility. A group of three or four on a long call can do Mycenae and Tiryns by pre-booked car for less.

Instead: Many ships here sail at 17:00. Work back from all-aboard and add 90 minutes for the tender queue.
Nafplio is a relaxed, low-crime town. The real risks are heat and sun at Palamidi, Mycenae and Epidaurus, which have little shade, and worn stone on the Palamidi stairs. Carry water, a hat and shoes with grip. Watch for traffic on the narrow roads by the waterfront.
Emergency number: 112
Crowds
Tour groups head out to Mycenae and Epidaurus first, so the Old Town is quietest in the morning and busiest at lunch. At the sites, an early start beats both the heat and the coaches. Visit Palamidi at opening.
Accessibility
Tender transfers depend on the sea state; ask the ship whether wheelchair users can go ashore. The waterfront and Syntagma Square are flat. Palamidi's stairs are unsuitable for wheelchairs; vehicles reach the entrance by road, but the fortress interior is uneven. Mycenae has facilities for disabled visitors at the museum, but the citadel paths are rough and sloping, as are those at Epidaurus.
If it rains
Spend the morning at the Archaeological Museum on Syntagma Square (closed Tuesdays), then shelter in cafés on Staikopoulou Street. Skip the Palamidi stairs when wet. If you are already on a tour, the museums at Mycenae and Epidaurus are indoor options.
