Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerCruise ships anchor in the bay off Hvar Town and tender passengers to the main tender station on the harbour waterfront (the Riva). From there St Stephen's Square, the cathedral and the steps up to Fortica are all on foot, so you need no transport. Be back in the tender queue 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Where people get it wrong: Staying on the Pakleni islands too long and finding the next taxi boat back leaves too late for the tender queue.

Open my full Hvar day, timed to 17:30 Get this for every port on your cruise, with alerts on the day Write about Hvar? Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeHvar Town is a small harbour town on the south-west of the island, with the largest square in Dalmatia running inland from the harbour and the Fortica fortress on the hill above. There is no cruise berth: ships anchor and tender. Everything in town is walkable, and taxi boats from the same harbour cross to the Pakleni islands for swimming. The two things that decide the day are the summer heat on the climb to Fortica and the timing of your return boat if you go to the islands.
Walkable? Yes · about 10 min
The harbour, St Stephen's Square and the cathedral are a short, flat walk from the tender landing. The only climb is the stepped path up to Fortica (about 20–30 minutes). Beaches west of town (Bonj, Pokonji Dol) are walkable along the coast.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be in the tender queue on the Riva 90 minutes before all-aboard: by 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard.
Everything returns through one tender landing, and queues build in the last two hours. If you go to the Pakleni islands, take a return taxi boat that lands you in Hvar harbour by 15:00 at the latest, because the next boat may be 20–30 minutes away and sea conditions can change the timetable.
If you're running late
If you miss your planned taxi boat, ask the boat crews on the island about the next departure or a private boat. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
Ships anchor in the bay near Hvar Town and tender passengers to the main tender station on the Riva (harbour waterfront). From the landing, the Franciscan monastery and a small swimming cove are one to two minutes to the right; the Jadrolinija office, an ATM, waterfront restaurants and St Stephen's Square are to the left. Cruise passengers report the tender operation running smoothly, but allow for queues in the last hours before all-aboard and for weather affecting tender operations.

Skip the ship's tour for Hvar Town itself: the square, cathedral and Fortica are all within walking distance of the tender landing. A ship tour is worth it for the inland island (lavender areas, Stari Grad) because you would otherwise need a hire car or taxi and a firm plan for getting back. For the Pakleni islands, independent taxi boats work well on a long call, but a ship-run boat trip removes the return-timing risk on a short one.
Climbing to Fortica at midday in July or August.
Instead: Go at opening (09:00). The upper section has no shade.
Getting on a taxi boat without checking return times.
Instead: Each boat serves one island; ask for the return schedule before paying and aim to be back in Hvar by 15:00.
Planning to see the cathedral in the afternoon.
Instead: It closes 12:30–17:00, which covers most of a cruise afternoon. Go in the morning.
Returning to the tender landing 30 minutes before all-aboard.
Instead: Be in the queue 90 minutes before; everyone returns at once.
Walking through town in swimwear.
Instead: Hvar's summer public-order package includes clothing rules; cover up away from the beach.
Hvar Town is safe for visitors in the daytime. The main risks are heat on the Fortica climb, slips on polished stone steps, and sea conditions on small boats. Hvar has adopted a summer package of public-order rules covering noise and behaviour, with fines of up to €300 for individuals for noise offences; the package also covers clothing, so dress modestly in town. Take water and a hat, and keep a close eye on your return boat time.

Crowds
Hvar and Šibenik each recorded 35 foreign cruise ship calls in the first half of 2026, so ship days are common, and peak season runs from mid-June to August. The square is quietest before 09:00. Do Fortica and the square first, then head to the islands when the town is busiest.
Accessibility
The tender transfer is the main barrier; ask the ship whether wheelchair users can go ashore, as it depends on the swell. The Riva and St Stephen's Square are flat but paved with smooth stone. Fortica is reached only by stepped paths and is not suitable for wheelchairs. The beaches west of town are reached on uneven paths, and taxi boats have no step-free boarding.
If it rains
Use the day for indoor sights: the Hvar Theatre, the cathedral (morning only), the Benedictine convent's lace collection and the loggia and clock tower. Skip Fortica's slippery steps and the Pakleni islands, as taxi boats may not run in rough sea.

Your whole cruise, planned like this
The day plan above assumes a 17:30 all-aboard. Your ship's times will differ, and so will every other stop. Pro builds the plan from your ship's real times: a timed day in Hvar and every other port, a leave-by time for each stop, and a Plan B if you run late. Ultimate adds a live leave-by countdown from where you are on the day. Every plan uses the same checked facts as this guide. Nothing is made up.
