Venice Cruise Port

Quick answerOnly ships up to 25,000 GT still berth in the city, at Marittima or San Basilio; larger ships use Porto Marghera or Fusina on the mainland, and some 'Venice' cruises sail from Trieste, Monfalcone or Ravenna. From Marittima, take the People Mover or walk to Piazzale Roma, then a vaporetto to San Marco: €9.50 for a 75-minute ticket (2026). From Marghera or Fusina, use the cruise line's transfer and be back at its pick-up point at least two hours before all-aboard.

Fees and limits in Venice

  • Day visitors aged 14+ entering the historic centre between 08:30 and 16:00 on 60 set days must pay an access fee and carry a QR code; cruise passengers only passing through the Stazione Marittima terminal do not pay.

€5 if booked 4+ days ahead; €10 if booked within the last days before the visit

    Status and sources
  • Ships over 25,000 gross tonnes (and others exceeding length, air-draught or fuel-sulphur limits) are banned from the San Marco Basin, San Marco Canal and Giudecca Canal; in 2026 large ships still use Fusina, Marghera and Chioggia rather than the historic centre.

    Status and sources

Transport: Port of Venice (Marittima, San Basilio, Porto Marghera and Fusina) to the historic centre

'Venice' on a cruise ticket no longer means sailing past St Mark's. Since the 2021 decree, ships over 25,000 GT cannot use the Giudecca Canal, so the port runs a split system: small luxury and expedition ships at Marittima and San Basilio, everything else at the Liguria and Lombardia quays in Porto Marghera or at the Fusina terminal on the mainland. Some lines skip the lagoon entirely and sell Trieste, Monfalcone or Ravenna as Venice. More than 95% of calls in 2026 are embarkation or disembarkation days, so most passengers here are fitting the city around a flight or a check-in time. Work out your berth first; everything else follows from it.

Walkable? Partly · about 40 min (3 km)

From Marittima you can walk to Piazzale Roma and on through the city to St Mark's in about 30–45 minutes, crossing many stepped bridges. From San Basilio the centre is also walkable. From Porto Marghera, Fusina, Chioggia or the ports outside the lagoon, walking into Venice is not possible.

Where your ship docks

  • Stazione Marittima (Santa Marta) · 3 km to the centre — Ships up to 25,000 GT only in 2026, mainly luxury and expedition ships. Also used by cruise lines as a check-in and transfer point for ships berthed at Marghera. The People Mover links it to Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto.
  • San Basilio — Quay on the Zattere side of Dorsoduro, inside the city, for the smallest ships (also under the 25,000 GT limit). Walkable to the centre.
  • Porto Marghera (Liguria and Lombardia quays) — Industrial port on the mainland, used by mid-size ships. Cruise lines run shuttle buses to Marittima or Piazzale Roma, about 15–20 minutes plus queuing. Not walkable.
  • Fusina — Mainland terminal south of Marghera with two quays, fully operational since August 2024. Opened the 2026 season with Viking Star on 16 March. Use the transfer your cruise line arranges.
  • Chioggia — Fishing town at the southern end of the lagoon. 23 cruise calls by 9 ships in 2026. About an hour or more from Venice by road or boat.
  • Trieste, Monfalcone, Ravenna (sold as 'Venice') · 165 km to the centre — Figure is for Trieste, about 165 km away (just over 2 hours by fast train). Monfalcone is about 1.5 hours away; Ravenna (Porto Corsini) about 2.5 hours by road. These are separate ports, not Venice.

People Mover (Marittima – Piazzale Roma – Tronchetto)

€1.50 one way (2026); also valid with ACTV 75-minute tickets and day passesAbout 4 minutes

Elevated shuttle train every few minutes from early morning to late evening. From Marittima it takes you to Piazzale Roma, where the vaporetto lines start. Cruise lines berthed at Marghera often drop passengers at Marittima or Piazzale Roma too.

ACTV vaporetto (water bus) lines 1 and 2

€9.50 for a 75-minute ticket; €25 for 24 hours, €35 for 48 hours, €45 for 72 hours (2026)Allow 45–60 minutes from the gangway at Marittima to St Mark's

From Piazzale Roma, line 1 calls at every stop along the Grand Canal to San Marco and is the slowest; line 2 makes fewer stops. Buy tickets from machines or ticket offices before boarding: cash is not accepted on board. Passes do not cover Alilaguna boats, the airport ACTV service or lines 16, 19 and 21.

Cruise line shuttle (Marghera and Fusina)

Set by your cruise lineMarghera to Marittima about 15–20 minutes plus queuing

From Marghera, plan 75–90 minutes each way between the ship and St Mark's. Check in the daily programme where the shuttle drops off, when the last one leaves and whether it is free. From Fusina, use the line's boat or coach transfer.

Alilaguna

Not covered by ACTV tickets; check fares with the operatorVaries by line

Private boat company running the Blu, Arancio, Rossa and Verde lines, mainly between the airport and the city. Stops include San Marco, San Zaccaria, Zattere, Rialto and Lido. Useful on embarkation or disembarkation day; stops are sometimes moved for regattas and events.

Water taxi

Expensive; agree the price before boardingDirect, door to door

Licensed water taxis carry several people and luggage. Worth it for limited mobility or a tight flight connection, not for a single traveller on a budget.

Walk

Free30–45 minutes Marittima to St Mark's

Only practical from Marittima and San Basilio. Expect bridges with steps, narrow lanes and crowds.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

From Marittima or San Basilio, leave St Mark's 2 hours before all-aboard. From Marghera or Fusina, be at the cruise line's pick-up point at least 2 hours before all-aboard (15:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard).

The trip from St Mark's to Marittima takes 45–60 minutes by vaporetto and People Mover, and vaporetti fill up in the afternoon. From Marghera, add the shuttle time and the queue for it. Ships at Trieste, Monfalcone or Ravenna are 1.5 to 2.5 hours from Venice each way, which leaves little time in the city.

If you're running late

If you miss the last shuttle, a taxi from Piazzale Roma reaches the mainland quays by road. Call the port agent number in your daily programme as soon as you know you will be late. Ships do not wait.

If your ship is at Marittima or San Basilio, Venice needs no excursion. At Marghera or Fusina, the line's shuttle does most of the work, and a guided tour mainly saves you the vaporetto and the queues. If your 'Venice' call is really Trieste, Monfalcone or Ravenna, the ship's coach to Venice is the safer option: the round trip eats 3 to 5 hours, and the ship will wait for its own coach but not for you. In that case, spending the day in the port city itself is often the better choice.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Venice

Assuming 'Venice' means the ship docks in the city.

Instead: Check the exact berth in your booking documents and daily programme: Marittima, San Basilio, Marghera, Fusina, Chioggia, or a port outside the lagoon such as Trieste, Monfalcone or Ravenna.

Trying to pay for the vaporetto on board in cash.

Instead: Buy a 75-minute ticket or a day pass from a machine or ticket office before boarding.

Turning up at the Basilica with a backpack or handbag.

Instead: No bags are allowed inside. Use the deposit or travel light.

Buying a Doge's Palace ticket without a time slot for a morning visit.

Instead: Untimed tickets admit you only from 12:00. Book a timed slot, and book 30 days ahead for the €30 online price.

Underestimating the return from St Mark's to a mainland quay.

Instead: Allow at least two hours from St Mark's to the ship at Marghera or Fusina, including the shuttle queue.

Ignoring the access fee on a fee day.

Instead: If a future season repeats the scheme, check the calendar on the city's official site and pay online before your call date.

Safety: is Venice safe for cruise passengers?

Venice is safe for daytime visitors. The main risks are pickpockets on crowded vaporetti, at the Rialto and around St Mark's, and slips on wet stone and bridge steps. Keep bags closed and in front on the water buses. In late autumn and winter, acqua alta (high water) can flood St Mark's Square and low-lying lanes; follow the raised walkways and the city's tide alerts.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Unofficial resellers selling St Mark's Basilica entry at a mark-up. The Basilica's own site, tickets.basilicasanmarco.it, is the only official ticket office; basic entry is €10 (2026).
  • Water taxi drivers quoting high fares to cruise passengers at Piazzale Roma and Tronchetto. Use licensed taxis and agree the price before you board.
  • Restaurant bills near St Mark's with cover and service charges you did not expect. Check the menu for 'coperto' and 'servizio' before you sit down.

Practical information

Crowds

St Mark's Square, the Rialto and the lanes between them are busiest from late morning to mid-afternoon. In 2026 the city charged a day-tripper access fee on 60 days between 3 April and 26 July, from 08:30 to 16:00: €5 booked at least four days ahead, €10 after that, under-14s exempt. There was no general exemption for cruise passengers; time spent only at Marittima, San Basilio, Piazzale Roma, Tronchetto or the station was not charged. The 2026 trial ended on 26 July, and the city must approve any scheme for later years.

Accessibility

Venice has more than 400 bridges, most with steps, so step-free routes are limited. Vaporetti are the best option for wheelchair users: most stops are floating pontoons and the boats take wheelchairs. The People Mover links Marittima to Piazzale Roma without steps. People with disabilities and one companion enter St Mark's Basilica free. At Marghera and Fusina, ask the cruise line for an adapted shuttle in advance.

If it rains

The Doge's Palace and the museums on the St Mark's Square ticket (Museo Correr, the National Archaeological Museum and the Marciana Library rooms) fill a wet morning under one €35 ticket (2026). The Basilica is indoors but has a queue outside. A ride on vaporetto line 1 lets you see the Grand Canal from under cover.
