Copenhagen Cruise Port

Quick answerCopenhagen has three cruise berths. Transport: Port of Copenhagen (Oceankaj, Langelinie, Nordre Toldbod) to Nyhavn and the city centre

Which quay your ship uses decides the day in Copenhagen. Langelinie and Nordre Toldbod are on the city's waterfront, minutes from the Little Mermaid, with Amalienborg and Nyhavn a pleasant walk south. Oceankaj, where most large ships now berth, is out in the Nordhavn container port and needs a bus and the metro. Once in the centre, everything is flat and close: Nyhavn's canal boats, Rosenborg's crown jewels, Christiansborg on its island and Tivoli by the central station. Copenhagen is also a major turnaround port, so on some days the terminals are busy with luggage and coaches rather than day visitors.

Walkable? Partly · about 25 min (2 km)

From Langelinie: 5 minutes to the Little Mermaid, then south past Nordre Toldbod and along the water to Amalienborg and Nyhavn, all flat, about 25 minutes in total. From Nordre Toldbod it is about 10 minutes to Amalienborg or Nyhavn. From Oceankaj, walking is not practical: take the bus and metro or a taxi.

Where your ship docks

  • Oceankaj (Ocean Quay), Nordhavn · 8 km to the centre — The largest terminal and furthest from the centre, about 8 km by road and 25–30 minutes by car. Too far to walk to the metro (about 45 minutes). Buses 25 and 164 stop at the terminal and run to Orientkaj metro (M4); when ships are in, buses run every 10–20 minutes. Cruise lines may run a shuttle; check on board.
  • Langelinie · 2 km to the centre — On the waterfront next to the Little Mermaid (about 5 minutes on foot). Bus 27 runs from the Indiakaj stop, 5 minutes from the ships, to Østerport station; it usually runs only when cruise ships are in. Østerport is about 15 minutes' walk.
  • Nordre Toldbod · 1.5 km to the centre — Smallest and most central berth, just south of the Little Mermaid. About 10 minutes' walk along the water to Amalienborg and Nyhavn, and about 14 minutes to Marmorkirken metro (M3/M4). Harbour buses 991 and 992 stop nearby.

Bus 25 or 164 + metro M4 (from Oceankaj)

24 kr on a 2-zone ticket (2026)About 20 min to Kongens Nytorv, 30 min to Central Station

Board bus 25 or 164 at the Oceankaj stop by terminal 1 to Orientkaj, the end of metro line M4, then ride M4 towards Kongens Nytorv for Nyhavn. One 2-zone ticket covers bus and metro together. Buy in the DOT Tickets/Rejsekort app, from metro machines or from the bus driver.

Bus 27 (from Langelinie)

24 kr on a 2-zone ticket (2026)A few minutes to Østerport

Walk 5 minutes to the Indiakaj stop. Bus 27 runs to Østerport station for metro M3/M4 and S-trains. Only buses ending at Langelinie serve the quay, and they usually run only on cruise days. Walking to Østerport takes about 15 minutes.

Metro M3/M4 (from Nordre Toldbod)

24 kr on a 2-zone ticket (2026)About 14 min walk to Marmorkirken, then 1 stop to Kongens Nytorv

Marmorkirken is under 1 km from the quay. Most visitors simply walk along the water to Nyhavn instead.

City Pass Small

From 100 kr for 24 hours (2026)—

Unlimited bus, metro, train and harbour bus travel in zones 1–4, including the airport. Worth it if you will make four or more trips. Sold in the apps and at station machines.

Harbour bus 991/992

Normal public transport ticket (24 kr for 2 zones, 2026)Full route just over an hour

Commuter boats on the harbour between København Syd and Refshaleøen, with a stop near Nordre Toldbod. Line 991 runs south, 992 north. A cheap way to see the waterfront; tickets work across bus, metro and harbour bus.

Taxi

Oceankaj to Kongens Nytorv about 175 kr by day, 215 kr evening; Langelinie to Kongens Nytorv about 96 kr by day (2026 estimates)10–25 min

Taxis wait at the terminals. Fares are Visit Copenhagen's estimates and depend on traffic. Pay by card.

Hop-on hop-off bus

199 kr, valid 72 hours (2026)—

Stops at Langelinie and serves Nyhavn, Amalienborg and Tivoli.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

For Oceankaj, leave Kongens Nytorv 75 minutes before you must be on board (for a 17:30 all-aboard, by 15:15 to be on board by 16:30). For Langelinie or Nordre Toldbod, leave Nyhavn 45 minutes before.

The Oceankaj trip is about 20 minutes on the metro and bus plus waits: buses run every 10–20 minutes on ship days. From Nyhavn to Langelinie on foot is about 25 minutes.

If you're running late

Take a taxi from a rank at Kongens Nytorv or Nyhavn: about 175 kr and 25 minutes to Oceankaj by day. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you will be late.

Copenhagen is easy to do alone, even from Oceankaj. A ship excursion is worth it mainly for trips outside the city, such as Kronborg Castle at Helsingør or Roskilde, where a coach saves connections, or for passengers with limited mobility at Oceankaj. For the city itself, the metro, a canal tour and your own feet cover the main sights for far less.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Copenhagen

Assuming you can walk into town from Oceankaj.

Instead: It is about 45 minutes just to the metro. Take bus 25 or 164 to Orientkaj and metro M4.

Turning up at Rosenborg without a timed ticket in summer.

Instead: Book a slot online; it is cheaper (140 kr) and slots sell out.

Walking in the cycle lanes.

Instead: Copenhagen's cycle lanes are busy and fast. Stay on the pavement and look both ways before crossing them.

Planning a summer Tivoli visit on an autumn or winter call.

Instead: Tivoli opens only in themed seasons; check the season dates before you plan around it.

Eating on the Nyhavn quayside.

Instead: Prices reflect the view. Torvehallerne or Reffen give better value.

Buying a 3-zone ticket for the city.

Instead: A 2-zone ticket (24 kr) covers any cruise terminal to central Copenhagen; 3 zones are needed only for the airport.

Safety: is Copenhagen safe for cruise passengers?

Copenhagen is a safe city by day. Pickpockets work in crowded places: Nyhavn, Strøget, Central Station and on busy metro trains. The most common danger for visitors is cycle traffic: bike lanes run beside every main road and cyclists move fast. In an emergency call 112.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Pickpocketing in crowds at Nyhavn, on Strøget and around Central Station. Keep bags zipped and phones out of back pockets.
  • Street 'shell games' on or near Strøget, where onlookers in the crowd are part of the act. Do not play.
  • Overpriced food and drinks on the Nyhavn quayside. Check the menu prices before you sit down.

Emergency number: 112

Practical information

Crowds

The Little Mermaid is busiest from about 10:00 to 14:00, when coach groups stop there, so go early or late. Nyhavn and the canal-tour queues peak around midday. Rosenborg limits entry with timed slots that sell out in summer. On turnaround days the terminals are busy with arrivals and departures; leave extra time at Oceankaj.

Accessibility

Copenhagen is flat and most pavements are smooth, which makes the Langelinie–Little Mermaid–Nyhavn walk manageable for most people. From Oceankaj, the bus and metro route works for wheelchair users, but a taxi is simpler. Rosenborg has no lift: wheelchair users can see only the ground floor and the Treasury, with help on the steps. Cobbles around Nyhavn and Amalienborg are uneven.

If it rains

Rosenborg and Christiansborg are both mostly indoors and close to the metro. Torvehallerne's glass halls are a dry place for lunch. A covered canal boat still works in light rain.
