Amsterdam Cruise Port

Quick answerMost sea cruise ships dock at Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA) on Piet Heinkade, a flat 15-minute walk east of Centraal Station; tram 26 also runs to Centraal. Some ships use the Felison Cruise Terminal in IJmuiden instead, about 30–35 km away, which needs a shuttle, bus plus train, or taxi. From PTA, leave Museumplein by 15:30 or Centraal by 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard.

Transport: Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), with overflow calls at IJmuiden to the canal ring and Centraal Station area

Amsterdam is one of the few big European cities where a sea cruise ship ties up within walking distance of the old centre. That is changing. From 2026 the city allows one sea cruise ship a day at PTA and no more than 100 sea cruise calls a year, so more ships are being moved to IJmuiden on the North Sea coast, about an hour from the centre by public transport. Check your berth before planning. The city's three big museums all run on timed tickets, and the Anne Frank House is sold online only and sells out weeks ahead, so book before you sail. Amsterdam also charges cruise passengers a day-tourist tax of €15 per person (2026), billed through the ship.

Walkable? Yes · about 15 min (1.2 km)

From PTA the walk to Centraal Station is flat and about 10–15 minutes along Piet Heinkade and the IJ waterfront. From Centraal, Dam Square is about 10 minutes south along the Damrak, and the Anne Frank House about 20 minutes west. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum are further, best reached by tram. Watch for cycle paths: they look like pavements, bikes come fast and have priority. From IJmuiden, nothing is walkable.

Where your ship docks

  • Passenger Terminal Amsterdam (PTA), Piet Heinkade 27 · 1.2 km to the centre — The city-centre terminal on the IJ, east of Centraal Station, with a 600 m quay for ships up to about 340 m. From 2026 only one sea cruise ship a day can berth here. Exit the building, turn right (west) and follow Piet Heinkade to Centraal in 10–15 minutes. Tram 26 stops at Muziekgebouw, a few minutes' walk away, and runs to Centraal. Taxis wait outside. Luggage lockers in the terminal take coins only.
  • Felison Cruise Terminal, IJmuiden (Cruiseboulevard 10) · 32 km to the centre — On the North Sea coast at the mouth of the North Sea Canal, about 30–35 km from the centre. Used by large ships and by calls that cannot get a PTA slot. Many lines run a paid shuttle coach to central Amsterdam. Public transport is Connexxion bus 382 from the IJmuiden Badweg stop on the road outside to Amsterdam Sloterdijk, then a short train to Centraal. Taxis take about 30 minutes without traffic.
  • Coenhaven — Industrial port area west of the centre where some ships have berthed. Not walkable to the old town; rely on the ship's shuttle or a taxi.

Turn right out of the terminal and follow the waterfront west. Flat and paved all the way. Stay off the red cycle lanes.

GVB tram 26

€3.40 one-hour ticket bought on board by card (2026), or tap in with a bank cardOne stop, Muziekgebouw to Centraal

Muziekgebouw Bimhuis stop is about 4 minutes' walk from PTA. Useful if you have mobility problems; otherwise walking is about as quick. Trams and buses do not take cash.

GVB trams 2, 12 (Rijksmuseum) and 2, 5, 12 (Van Gogh Museum)

Bank-card tap: €1.16 boarding fee plus a distance charge, capped at €10.50 a day (GVB Max); GVB day tickets from €10 (2026)Allow 35–45 min door to door from PTA to the Rijksmuseum

From Centraal take tram 2 or 12 to the Rijksmuseum stop. For the Van Gogh Museum use the Van Baerlestraat or Museumplein stops. Pay by tapping a contactless bank card or phone on the reader when you get on and again when you get off (OVpay). Each person needs their own card or phone. Forgetting to tap out leaves you charged a higher fare.

GVB day and multi-day tickets

From €10 for 24 hours (2026)Valid from first use

Covers GVB trams, buses and metro. Buy in the GVB app or by card on board. Only worth it if you will take three or more rides; a typical cruise day with a return tram trip to Museumplein costs less on bank-card tap with the €10.50 daily cap as a safety net.

IJmuiden: cruise line shuttle

Varies by line; check your cruise plannerAbout 30–45 min each way plus loading

The simplest option from IJmuiden. Check the drop-off point and the last return time in your daily programme.

IJmuiden: Connexxion bus 382 and train

Pay by contactless bank card on the bus, then a train fare from SloterdijkAbout 45 min by bus to Sloterdijk, about 1 hour to Centraal in total

Board at IJmuiden Badweg, on the road outside the terminal. The bus runs about every 15 minutes to Amsterdam Sloterdijk, where frequent trains run to Centraal. Tap in and out with the same bank card on both bus and train.

Taxi, Uber, Bolt

Metered; from IJmuiden about €80–125 each wayAbout 30 min from IJmuiden without traffic; a few minutes from PTA

Taxis wait at PTA. From IJmuiden a taxi is the fastest way back if you are running late, but it is expensive. Agree on the meter, not a fixed price, with street taxis.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

For a 17:30 all-aboard at PTA: leave Museumplein by 15:30 and Centraal by 16:00. At IJmuiden by bus and train: be at Centraal by 14:45; by ship shuttle, follow the last shuttle time.

Tram from the Rijksmuseum to Centraal plus the 15-minute walk to PTA takes 35–45 minutes, and trams slow down in the afternoon. That gets you on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. From IJmuiden the public transport return is about an hour with a change at Sloterdijk, so treat it as a train-dependent trip and aim to be on board 90 minutes early.

If you're running late

From the centre, a taxi to PTA takes a few minutes. From the centre to IJmuiden, a taxi takes about 30 minutes outside rush hour and costs about €80–125. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you will be late.

What to see in Amsterdam on a cruise day

Rijksmuseum

The national museum: Rembrandt's The Night Watch, Vermeer and the Dutch Golden Age collection.

⏱ 2 hours€25 adult; under-18s free (2026)

Tip: Open daily 09:00–17:00. Everyone, including children, needs a timed slot booked online; tickets are not sold at the door.

Van Gogh Museum

The largest Van Gogh collection in the world, across Museumplein from the Rijksmuseum.

⏱ 1.5 hoursCharged, under-18s free; check the museum's own site for the 2026 adult price

Tip: Online timed tickets only. Usually open to 18:00, later on most Fridays. Doing both this and the Rijksmuseum in one cruise day is tiring; pick one.

Anne Frank House

The canal house on the Prinsengracht where Anne Frank's family hid, including the Secret Annex.

⏱ 1 hour€16.50 adult (2026)

Tip: Online only, never at the door. Tickets go on sale every Tuesday at 10:00 Amsterdam time for visits six weeks later and sell out within hours; a smaller batch for the following week is released at the same time. No waiting list.

Canal ring (Grachtengordel) and the Nine Streets

The 17th-century canals of Herengracht, Keizersgracht and Prinsengracht, with small shops in the Nine Streets that cross them.

Tip: Walk it between the Rijksmuseum and the Anne Frank House instead of taking the tram.

Canal cruise

The easiest way to see the canal houses and bridges without walking, and dry on a wet day.

⏱ About 1 hourVaries by operator; check before boarding

Tip: Several operators sail from the piers opposite Centraal, close to PTA. Check the return time before you buy.

Dam Square and the Royal Palace

The city's main square, ten minutes from Centraal, with the former town hall that is now a royal palace.

⏱ 30 minutesSquare free; palace charged when open

Tip: The Damrak between Centraal and Dam is crowded and full of tourist shops; take the parallel streets for a quieter walk.

Jordaan

Former working-class district west of the canal ring, now cafés, galleries and courtyard almshouses (hofjes).

⏱ 1 hourFree

Tip: Combine with the Anne Frank House, which is on its edge. The Noordermarkt has a market on Mondays and Saturdays.

Zaanse Schans (on a long call)

Working windmills and wooden houses on the Zaan river north-west of the city.

⏱ 3–4 hours including travelVaries; some mills charge separately

Tip: Easiest as a ship tour. If you go alone, check entry rules on the site before you go.

Beaches near Amsterdam cruise port

Zandvoort aan Zee

Train from Amsterdam Centraal (direct or via Haarlem). · Check the NS timetable · Free beach; train fare

Amsterdam has no swimming beach in the centre. Only worth it if you skip the city. From IJmuiden, the IJmuiden beach is closer to the terminal than Amsterdam is.

From PTA, Amsterdam is easy to do alone: the centre is a walk away, trams take bank cards, and the museums sell timed tickets online. A ship tour is worth it in three cases: when your ship berths at IJmuiden and you want a guaranteed ride back, when you want to see the countryside (Zaanse Schans windmills, Volendam, Keukenhof in spring) without working out regional buses, and when you missed the Anne Frank House release, because ship tours sometimes hold group slots. Check what the tour includes; a 'canal cruise and city tour' you can do yourself for much less from the piers outside Centraal.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Amsterdam

Planning to buy Anne Frank House tickets on the day.

Instead: They are sold online only, released on Tuesdays at 10:00 for six weeks ahead. Set a reminder as soon as you know your port date.

Turning up at the Rijksmuseum or Van Gogh Museum without a timed ticket.

Instead: Book a slot online before you sail. Neither sells tickets at the door.

Assuming the ship docks in central Amsterdam.

Instead: With the 2026 limit of one ship a day at PTA, many calls go to IJmuiden, about an hour away. Check the berth in your cruise documents.

Walking in the red cycle lanes.

Instead: They look like pavements but bikes and mopeds come fast and have priority. Look both ways before stepping off the kerb.

Trying to pay for the tram with cash, or forgetting to tap out.

Instead: Trams and buses take cards only. Tap your bank card or phone on the reader getting on and getting off; each traveller needs their own card.

Hanging a bag on a café chair.

Instead: Keep it on your lap or between your feet. Bag thieves work the restaurants and cafés of the centre.

Safety: is Amsterdam safe for cruise passengers?

Amsterdam is safe for day visitors, but pickpocketing and bag theft are common in the centre, especially around Centraal Station and on trains and trams to and from Centraal and Schiphol. Thieves often work in pairs, with one creating a distraction. In restaurants, thieves posing as sellers or as someone looking for a friend walk in and take bags from chairs. The bigger everyday risk is traffic: cyclists and mopeds move fast, often ignore red lights, and have priority on cycle paths. Do not swim in the canals; it is dangerous and fined. Avoid quiet alleys in the Red Light District late at night and do not engage with anyone offering drugs.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Fake police: people posing as plain-clothes officers ask to inspect your cash or bank cards for counterfeits and take them. Dutch police rarely do this; refuse and call the police information line 0900 8844 if in doubt.
  • Distraction theft in restaurants: someone comes in selling something or asking about a friend while an accomplice lifts a bag from a chair back. Keep bags on your lap.
  • Pickpocket pairs on trams and trains around Centraal: one person blocks or bumps you while the other takes a phone or wallet. Keep valuables in front pockets or a zipped bag.

Practical information

Crowds

The Damrak, Dam Square and the Red Light District are crowded all day. The Rijksmuseum is quietest at the 09:00 opening; the Anne Frank House is sold out weeks ahead, so the queue you see is for people with tickets. From 2026 the city allows one sea cruise ship a day at PTA and no more than 100 sea cruise calls a year, down from about 190, and requires shore power from 2027. In January 2026 the city executive backed ending sea cruise calls in Amsterdam by 2035; the final decision was left to the council elected in March 2026. Amsterdam charges a day-tourist tax of €15 per person per day (2026) on cruise passengers aged 2 and over, declared by the ship and normally passed on in your fare or port charges.

Accessibility

PTA is a modern terminal, and the walk to Centraal is flat and paved; tram 26 is an alternative for the first stretch. Check step-free access with each museum when booking. The historic centre has narrow pavements, bridges with slopes, and parked bikes everywhere. Canal houses, including the Anne Frank House's Secret Annex, have very steep stairs. Canal cruise boats vary in access, so ask before buying. From IJmuiden, the cruise line shuttle is the practical choice for wheelchair users.

If it rains

Amsterdam handles rain well. The Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum fill a day on their own, and a covered canal cruise from the piers opposite Centraal is a dry way to see the canals. NEMO science museum is a short walk from PTA. Book museum slots in advance, because rainy days fill them quickly.
