Flåm Cruise Port

Quick answerOne ship docks at the Flåm cruise quay, about 200 m from the village and right beside the Flåm Railway station; any other ship anchors and tenders. Everything in the village is a short walk. The Flåm Railway round trip to Myrdal takes about 2 hours and sells out on cruise days, so book it before you sail and pick a train that returns at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Transport: Port of Flåm (Flåm cruise quay) to Flåm village and the railway station

Flåm is a small village at the head of the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord, and the port call is built around three things: the Flåm Railway up to Myrdal, a boat on the narrow Nærøyfjord to Gudvangen, and the Stegastein viewpoint 650 m above the fjord. There is no town to explore beyond a few streets, so the day depends on booked seats and departure times. The railway and fjord boats are the main draw for every ship in port, and departures fill well before passengers come ashore. The fjords around Flåm are part of the West Norwegian Fjords World Heritage area, and from 2026 Norway's zero-emission rules apply there to smaller passenger ships.

Walkable? Yes · about 3 min (0.2 km)

The quay, station, museum, cafés and shops are within a few minutes' walk on flat ground. The Brekkefossen waterfall trail starts about 1.5 km from the centre along an asphalt road beside the Flåm river, then climbs a steep, rocky path. Stegastein and Gudvangen need a bus or boat.

Where your ship docks

  • Flåm cruise quay · 0.2 km to the centre — The port gives the village centre as 200 m away. The Flåm Railway station, Railway Museum and Norway's Best bus stops are all beside the quay. Wi-Fi, toilets and terminal facilities are available. Draught limit 12 m; no length or beam limit is stated by the port.
  • Tender pier (ships at anchor) · 0.2 km to the centre — Used when a second ship calls. The anchorage is about 600 m off the tender pier. Allow extra time for tender queues on the way back.

20 km line with gradients of 5.5% on most of the route. Book on vy.no or norwaysbest.com before the cruise. Norway's Best says that when a departure is sold out, customer service has no extra tickets. Departures from Flåm on the published timetable: 08:20, 09:35, 10:50, 12:10, 14:45 and 16:00, returning to Flåm at 10:28, 11:43, 13:04, 14:22, 16:53 and 18:04. Confirm the timetable for your date. A lunch pack can be pre-ordered at least 24 hours ahead and collected at Café Rallaren at Myrdal.

Fjord cruise on the Nærøyfjord (Norway's Best)

Check norwaysbest.com; price varies by dateAbout 2 hours Flåm to Gudvangen

Norway's Best describes the boat as silent and emission-free. The morning sailing leaves Flåm at 09:30 and reaches Gudvangen at about 11:30. Return to Flåm on the shuttle bus (below). Seats are limited on busy days.

Shuttle bus Gudvangen–Flåm (Norway's Best)

Check norwaysbest.comAbout 20 min

Timed to connect with the fjord cruise. In Flåm it uses bus stop A/B; in Gudvangen stop H by the ferry pier. You must travel on the departure printed on your ticket. From 1 September to 15 October 2026, buses left Gudvangen at 11:45, 12:45, 13:45, 14:15, 15:45, 17:15 and 19:30. Allow at least 15 minutes between boat and bus. Under-4s need a free reserved seat.

Stegastein viewpoint bus

Check norwaysbest.comAbout 1.5 hours round trip

Norway's Best runs the bus from Flåm via Aurland. An audio guide in six languages is included. Driving is discouraged: the road is narrow and mostly single-lane, and parking at the top costs 41 kr an hour with a 30-minute limit. In winter the road from Flåm is closed and access is only from Aurland.

Taxi

No fixed fares; agree the price first—

Norway's taxi market is open and prices vary by firm. In a village this small, few cruise visitors need one.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Book a train that gets back to Flåm at least 90 minutes before all-aboard. For a 17:30 all-aboard, the 12:10 departure (back at 14:22) is the last safe train on the published timetable; the 14:45 departure returns at 16:53, which is too late.

The return depends on a fixed train, boat or bus departure with limited seats, so there is no quick alternative if you miss it. From the station to the quay is only a few minutes' walk. If your ship is at anchor, add at least 30 minutes for the tender queue.

If you're running late

Call the port agent number in your daily programme as soon as you know you will be late. Myrdal has no road access and the railway is the only practical link, so missing the last safe train is the main risk of the day.

The cruise quay takes one ship. When it is occupied, other ships anchor on a sandy bottom about 600 m from the tender pier, which can serve two ships. Check your daily programme for which applies.

Everything in Flåm starts beside the quay, so booking direct is easy. The real issue is seats. If you have not booked the railway or the fjord boat before sailing and several ships are in, a ship excursion may be the only way to get on, and ships generally wait for their own tours if a train runs late. Ship tours also make sense for combined trips (railway, fjord cruise and bus in one day) on a short call, where a missed connection costs you the ship. If you book independently, leave a wide margin and keep the receipts on your phone.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Flåm

Arriving without a Flåm Railway ticket.

Instead: Book on vy.no or norwaysbest.com before you sail. Sold-out departures cannot be topped up by customer service.

Booking an afternoon train that returns too close to all-aboard.

Instead: Choose a train back in Flåm at least 90 minutes before all-aboard. Add 30 minutes if your ship is at anchor.

Trying to fit the railway and the Nærøyfjord cruise into one short call.

Instead: The combination takes about 6 hours with connections. Do it only on a long call, or pick one and add Stegastein.

Missing the booked shuttle bus from Gudvangen.

Instead: You must travel on the bus printed on your ticket. Leave at least 15 minutes between boat and bus.

Driving a hire car to Stegastein.

Instead: The road is mostly single-lane and parking is limited to 30 minutes. The Norway's Best bus is simpler.

Safety: is Flåm safe for cruise passengers?

Flåm is a small, quiet village with very little crime. The real risks are practical: missing a fixed train, boat or bus back, wet and rocky ground on the Brekkefossen trail, and fast weather changes at Myrdal and Stegastein, which are much higher than the fjord. Carry a waterproof layer even in summer. Voss Hospital, 65 km away, is the nearest hospital. In an emergency call 112 (police), 113 (ambulance) or 110 (fire).

Scams and tourist traps

  • Third-party websites reselling Flåm Railway or fjord cruise tickets at a mark-up. Compare with vy.no and norwaysbest.com before paying.
  • Taxis with no agreed fare. Norway's taxi market is deregulated, so ask for the price before you set off.
  • Card terminals offering to charge you in your home currency. Choose kroner to avoid a poor conversion rate.

Emergency number: 112 (police), 113 (ambulance), 110 (fire)

Practical information

Crowds

The railway and fjord boats serve every cruise passenger in port as well as Norway in a Nutshell travellers, so on cruise days departures fill early and some sell out before ships arrive. Book before the cruise and take the earliest train you can. The village is busiest late morning when trains and tour buses come back. From 1 January 2026, passenger ships under 10,000 gross tonnage must be zero-emission in the World Heritage fjords, which include the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord; larger ships, which covers most ocean cruise ships, follow from 1 January 2032. There is no cruise fee for passengers in 2026. The government has proposed a fee of 100 kr per passenger per day from 1 January 2027, which each municipality can choose to introduce and which would be collected through the ship.

Accessibility

The quay, station, museum and harbour cafés are close together on flat ground, so the village itself is manageable with a wheelchair or walker. Tendering, when it happens, is harder: check with the ship whether wheelchairs can be transferred that day. Brekkefossen is a steep, rocky trail and not suitable. For the railway, fjord boat and Stegastein bus, contact Norway's Best (+47 57 63 14 00) before booking to confirm step-free access and assistance.

If it rains

Flåm is mostly an outdoor port, but the Flåm Railway runs in all weather and the view from the carriage is still worth it in light rain. The Railway Museum (free, 10:00–17:00) is indoors beside the station. Ægir Gastropub, with its large open fireplace, is the obvious place to sit out a downpour. Skip Stegastein in low cloud: at 650 m above the fjord you may see nothing.
