Tromsø Cruise Port

Quick answerMost ships dock at Prostneset, right in the city centre, so you can walk straight into town. Ships longer than 230 m use Breivika, about 4.5 km north: take the cruise line shuttle or city bus 42 (card or app only, no cash). The Fjellheisen cable car and Arctic Cathedral are across the bridge by bus, so start back 90 minutes before all-aboard from there and 45 minutes from the centre.

Transport: Port of Tromsø (Prostneset and Breivika) to Tromsø city centre

Tromsø sits on an island inside the Arctic Circle, and the season decides the day. From about 20 May to 22 July the sun does not set. From September to April the city is known for the northern lights, and from late November to mid-January the sun stays below the horizon. Prostneset puts you on the harbour in the centre, with Polaria, the Polar Museum and Storgata a short walk away. The two big sights, the Fjellheisen cable car and the Arctic Cathedral, are on the mainland side in Tromsdalen and need a bus. Tromsø had 180 cruise calls and more than 193,000 cruise guests in 2025.

Walkable? Partly · about 5 min (0.3 km)

From Prostneset, the centre, Polaria, the Polar Museum and Ølhallen are all within easy walking distance. The Arctic Cathedral is about 20 minutes on foot across the Tromsø Bridge, and Fjellheisen is further up the Tromsdalen side, so most people take the bus. From Breivika you need a shuttle, bus or taxi.

Where your ship docks

  • Prostneset (quay 8; coastal ships at quay 7) · 0 km to the centre — Main cruise berth in the city centre: 300 m long, for ships up to 230 m. Hurtigruten and Havila coastal ships use quay 7. Storgata and the harbour promenade are a few minutes' walk.
  • Breivika (quay 21) · 4.5 km to the centre — For ships over 230 m. In an industrial area north of the centre; Visit Tromsø gives the distance as about 4 km. Not a sensible walk. Some lines run shuttles; otherwise use city bus 42 (underpass to the stop across Stakkevollvegen, direction Eidkjosen).

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

From the centre, start walking back to Prostneset 45 minutes before you must be on board. From Fjellheisen or the Arctic Cathedral, leave 90 minutes before all-aboard. From the centre to Breivika, be at the bus 42 stop 75 minutes before all-aboard.

The centre is small, but Fjellheisen depends on the cable car and a bus back across the bridge, and the queue down can be long on clear evenings. Wind can stop the cable car with little notice. Breivika is 4.5 km out and depends on bus or shuttle timings.

If you're running late

Take a taxi: Tromsø Taxi on +47 776 03 000. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you will be late.

From Prostneset, Tromsø is easy to do alone: the museums are on foot and Fjellheisen is one bus ride away. Hurtigruten's 3.5-hour city tour covers Fjellheisen, the Arctic Cathedral and Polaria for 1,760 kr, about 630 kr more than the entry tickets. The ship tour is worth it at Breivika, if you have limited mobility, or for northern-lights trips in winter, which go out of town and run late. When Fjellheisen was closed in April and May 2026, Hurtigruten replaced it with the Full Steam museum and credited about 25% of the price.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Tromsø

Trying to pay cash on the bus.

Instead: Buses take Visa or Mastercard on board, or use the Svipper app. Cash is not accepted.

Walking from Breivika.

Instead: It is about 4.5 km through an industrial area. Take bus 42, the ship shuttle or a taxi.

Expecting northern lights on a summer cruise.

Instead: From about 20 May to 22 July the sun does not set. The northern lights season is the dark half of the year, September to April.

Paying for Fjellheisen in cloud or high wind.

Instead: Check the status on fjellheisen.no before you leave the ship; switch to Polaria and the Polar Museum if the top is in cloud.

Buying cable car and cathedral tickets separately.

Instead: The Tromsø Pass – Cruise covers both for 662 kr instead of 735 kr.

Safety: is Tromsø safe for cruise passengers?

Tromsø is a safe, low-crime city and the centre is easy to walk by day and in the light summer nights. The main risks are weather and surfaces: ice and snow on pavements from autumn to spring, wind on Storsteinen, and fast changes in conditions at the top of the cable car. Wear shoes with grip in the cold months. In an emergency call 112 (police), 113 (ambulance) or 110 (fire). The University Hospital of North Norway (UNN) is about 0.5 km from Breivika.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Taxis with no agreed fare. Prices vary between operators; ask for the total before you set off.
  • Card terminals offering to charge in your home currency. Choose kroner to avoid a poor exchange rate.
  • Third-party resellers adding a mark-up to cable car or attraction tickets. Compare with fjellheisen.no and the Visit Tromsø shop first.

Emergency number: 112 (police), 113 (ambulance), 110 (fire)

Practical information

Crowds

Prostneset takes most calls, and Hurtigruten and Havila coastal ships use it too, so Storgata and the harbour can be busy at any time of year. Fjellheisen is the bottleneck: go at 09:00 opening or late in the evening. In the midnight-sun season the evening cable car is popular, so expect queues on the way down. Fjellheisen was closed to visitors in April and May 2026. There is no tourist tax or cruise fee for passengers in 2026. Tromsø plans an overnight visitor fee from 1 January 2027, and the government has proposed a cruise fee of 100 kr per passenger per day from 2027 that municipalities can choose to introduce.

Accessibility

Prostneset is in the centre, so Polaria, the Polar Museum and Storgata are close by. Polaria sells a reduced ticket for people with disabilities (260 kr in 2026) and companions with a companion card go free. Fjellheisen is not wheelchair accessible: Hurtigruten notes a long staircase at the top and no working lift. From Breivika, ask the ship about an accessible shuttle. In winter, ice and snow make the pavements hard going.

If it rains

Polaria (10:00–17:00) and the Polar Museum (10:00–18:00) are both indoors and a short walk from Prostneset. Ølhallen and the Mathallen food hall are good places to sit out the rain. The Arctic Cathedral is indoors too, but skip Fjellheisen in low cloud or wind.
