Reykjavik Cruise Port

Quick answerMost ships dock at Skarfabakki, about 4 km from downtown: take Strætó bus 16 (690 kr in 2026, about 20–25 minutes plus a 5–7 minute walk to the stop), your ship's own shuttle if it runs one, or walk 45–55 minutes along the coast. Smaller ships berth at Miðbakki in the Old Harbour, a few minutes' walk from Harpa. From Skarfabakki, leave the centre 75 minutes before all-aboard.

Transport: Port of Reykjavík (Skarfabakki/Vör terminal, Miðbakki, Faxagarður) to downtown Reykjavík (101)

Reykjavík is a small capital, and the cruise day here splits two ways. Some passengers stay in town: Hallgrímskirkja's tower, Harpa, the Sun Voyager and the Old Harbour fit easily into a few hours. Others leave the city for the Golden Circle or a geothermal lagoon, which means long coach rides and fixed booking slots. Most ships use Skarfabakki, where the new Vör terminal opened for the 2026 season. The free port shuttle that ran until 2025 has ended, so check whether your ship runs its own. Weather changes quickly and the coastal walk is exposed to wind.

Walkable? Partly · about 50 min (4 km)

From Miðbakki and Faxagarður, everything is a short walk. From Skarfabakki, the walk to Harpa is about 4 km and 45–55 minutes: first through a working harbour and light-industrial area, then on the flat, paved coastal path past the Sun Voyager. The path is shared with cyclists and is exposed to wind and rain.

Where your ship docks

  • Skarfabakki (Vör terminal, Sundahöfn) · 4 km to the centre — The main cruise quay, 650 m long, used by most large ships. The Vör terminal building opened for the 2026 season. About 4 km from downtown: 7–10 minutes by car, 45–55 minutes on foot. Strætó bus 16 stops on Sundagarðar, 5–7 minutes' walk from the terminal. The Faxaflóahafnir free shuttle ran 2023–2025 and has ended; some lines run their own, usually paid, shuttle to Harpa.
  • Miðbakki (Old Harbour) · 0.5 km to the centre — For smaller ships up to about 170 m. About 2 minutes' walk to the Old Harbour, 5 to Harpa, 10 to Laugavegur and 15 to Hallgrímskirkja.
  • Faxagarður (Old Harbour) · 0.5 km to the centre — A short berth for small ships beside Miðbakki, with the same easy walk into town.
  • Hafnarfjörður · 12 km to the centre — Some itineraries call at Hafnarfjörður, about 12 km south of Reykjavík. Strætó bus 1 runs to Reykjavík from the Fjörður stop, every 10–15 minutes on weekdays and every 30 minutes at weekends.

Strætó bus 16 (from Skarfabakki)

690 kr single, valid 75 minutes with transfers (2026)About 20–25 min to central Reykjavík

Walk 5–7 minutes from the Vör terminal to the stop on Sundagarðar. Buses run roughly every 30 minutes towards Hlemmur and central 101, not directly to Harpa. Pay by tapping a contactless Visa or Mastercard on the reader, or with the Klappið app. Drivers do not sell tickets and cash is not accepted.

Ship shuttle

Varies by line; check your daily programmeAbout 10 min to Harpa

Since the port's free shuttle ended after 2025, shuttles depend on each ship's agent. Where they run, they usually drop off near Harpa, run every 20–30 minutes and are sold as a day pass.

Taxi

Pre-booked Skarfabakki to downtown 12,600 kr per car (up to 4) or 16,400 kr per minivan; metered downtown to Skarfabakki about 5,000 kr per car (May 2026 quotes)7–15 min

Hreyfill (+354 588 5522) and BSR (+354 561 0000) are the main firms. There is no Uber, Lyft or Bolt. Rank waits at the terminal can reach 30–60 minutes when several ships are in. Cards accepted.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

From Skarfabakki: leave downtown 75 minutes before all-aboard (by 15:15 for 17:30) to be on board 60 minutes early. From Miðbakki or Faxagarður: leave 30 minutes before you need to be on board. For lagoons and the Golden Circle, book a return that lands you at the ship 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Bus 16 takes 20–25 minutes plus the walk from the stop, and runs about every 30 minutes, so one missed bus costs half an hour. Taxi queues get long on busy ship days, especially 13:00–17:00.

If you're running late

Call Hreyfill (+354 588 5522) or BSR (+354 561 0000); a metered taxi from downtown to Skarfabakki is about 5,000 kr. Walking the coastal path takes 45–55 minutes. If you will be late, call the port agent number in your daily programme.

Reykjavík's cruise berths are alongside. When ships anchor instead, Faxaports runs tender operations from the Akranes anchorage, with buses meeting passengers at Akranes. Check your daily programme if your ship is not alongside.

Cruise ships in Reykjavik this week

Assumes docking at Skarfabakki at 08:00 in the summer season. From Miðbakki, skip the bus and walk.

  1. 08:30 Walk 5–7 minutes to the bus 16 stop on Sundagarðar and ride into central 101, or take the ship shuttle if one runs.

  2. 09:15 Hallgrímskirkja: the church and the tower view (allow 45 minutes; on Sundays the tower closes about 10:30–12:30 for the service).

  3. 10:15 Walk down Skólavörðustígur and along Laugavegur, the main shopping street.

  4. 11:15 Harpa: walk through the free public foyer and out to the harbour front.

  5. 11:45 Walk east along the shore to the Sun Voyager sculpture and back.

  6. 12:30 Lunch at the Old Harbour or Grandi.

  7. 13:45 Explore Grandi's harbour area, or visit a museum if it is raining.

  9. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

What to see in Reykjavik on a cruise day

Hallgrímskirkja

The concrete Lutheran church that dominates the skyline; the tower gives the best view over the city's coloured roofs and the bay.

⏱ 45 minutesChurch free; tower 1,500 kr adults, 200 kr children 7–16 (2026)

Tip: Tower tickets are sold on the day only. Summer hours 09:00–19:45 for the tower; from 1 September 10:00–16:45. On Sundays church and tower usually close about 10:30–12:30 for the service.

Harpa

The concert hall on the harbour, with a glass facade designed with Ólafur Elíasson.

⏱ 30 minutesFree to the public foyer; tours and events charged

Tip: Guided tours led by musicians run on a schedule; book through Harpa.

Sun Voyager (Sólfar)

The steel ship sculpture on the shore path, with Mount Esja across the bay.

⏱ 15 minutesFree

Tip: It is on the coastal path from Skarfabakki, so you can see it on the walk in or out.

Old Harbour and Grandi

The working harbour turned into an area of cafés, whale-watching boats and food halls.

⏱ 1–1.5 hoursFree to walk

Tip: From Miðbakki it is 2 minutes away; from Skarfabakki about 2 km past the centre.

Laugavegur and Skólavörðustígur

The two main shopping streets, running downhill from Hallgrímskirkja to the centre.

⏱ 45 minutesFree

Tip: Walk them downhill from the church rather than up.

Sky Lagoon

A geothermal lagoon on the shore at Kársnes, Kópavogur, about 15 minutes' drive from downtown.

⏱ 2–3 hours plus transfersCharged; timed entry booked on skylagoon.com

Tip: Closer than the Blue Lagoon and the better fit for a port day. No under-12s; ages 12–14 must be with an adult. Book a slot and transfer that leaves you a clear margin.

Blue Lagoon

Iceland's best-known geothermal spa, in a lava field on the Reykjanes peninsula.

⏱ 3–4 hours on site plus 45–50 minutes each wayCharged; timed entry booked on bluelagoon.com

Tip: It sits next to the area of the Sundhnúkur eruptions and has been evacuated during eruptions, including in July 2025. On a port day it is a risk: book the ship's tour or a transfer with a return guarantee, and check the official site for closures that morning.

Golden Circle

Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir hot-spring area and Gullfoss waterfall on one loop east of the city.

⏱ 8–8.5 hours by tourSmall-group tour from the cruise terminal from 21,913 kr (2026)

Tip: Only realistic on a long call. Choose a tour that picks up at the terminal and guarantees the return.

For the city, go alone: bus 16 and your feet cover Hallgrímskirkja, Harpa and the Old Harbour. Outside the city, the case for the ship's tour is stronger here than in most ports. The Golden Circle is a full day by coach, the Blue Lagoon is 45–50 minutes away on the Reykjanes peninsula where eruptions have caused evacuations, and both need fixed time slots. A ship tour waits for you if it runs late; an independent one may not. If you book independently, choose an operator that picks up at the terminal and gives a written return guarantee.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Reykjavik

Expecting the free port shuttle from Skarfabakki.

Instead: It ended after 2025. Use bus 16 (690 kr), your ship's own shuttle if it runs one, or walk the coastal path.

Trying to pay the bus driver in cash.

Instead: Strætó drivers do not sell tickets. Tap a contactless card on the reader or use the Klappið app.

Squeezing the Blue Lagoon into a short call.

Instead: With 45–50 minutes each way, a timed slot and eruption-related closures, it needs a long call and a transfer with a return guarantee. Sky Lagoon is much closer.

Relying on a taxi from the rank for the return.

Instead: Queues can reach 30–60 minutes on busy ship days. Pre-book a taxi, or leave by bus with time to spare.

Dressing for the forecast you saw at breakfast.

Instead: Weather changes fast and the coastal path is exposed. Bring a windproof, waterproof layer even in summer.

Arriving at Hallgrímskirkja on Sunday morning.

Instead: The church and tower usually close from about 10:30 to 12:30 for the service. Go earlier or after lunch.

Safety: is Reykjavik safe for cruise passengers?

Reykjavík is a safe city for visitors and street crime is low. The real risks are natural: sudden weather changes, strong wind on the coast path, and volcanic activity on the Reykjanes peninsula, where eruptions near Grindavík have closed roads and forced Blue Lagoon evacuations. Access to Grindavík has been restricted for visitors. Follow official instructions and check the Blue Lagoon's site on the day. In an emergency call 112.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Card terminals offering to charge you in your home currency. Choose krónur (ISK); the conversion rate offered is usually poor.
  • Third-party resellers charging more than the official sites for lagoon entry. Book Sky Lagoon and Blue Lagoon on their own websites or through your ship.
  • Taxis with no agreed price for longer trips. For anything beyond the city, agree a fixed price with Hreyfill or BSR when you book.

Emergency number: 112

Practical information

Crowds

Several ships often call on the same day in summer, and that is when the Hallgrímskirkja tower queue, bus 16 and the terminal taxi rank are under most pressure; taxi waits peak between 13:00 and 17:00. Go to the tower first thing. Since 1 January 2026, Iceland's infrastructure fee on international cruise passengers is 1,600 kr per passenger for each started day in port. The ship operator pays it, not you on the quay.

Accessibility

Skarfabakki is 4 km from the centre, so wheelchair users should use a ship shuttle (ask about lifts) or pre-book an accessible taxi minivan. The coastal path into town is flat and paved. Downtown has slopes, especially the climb to Hallgrímskirkja; walk it downhill. Tender calls at Akranes involve boats and a coach transfer and may not suit passengers with reduced mobility.

If it rains

Harpa's foyer is free and dry. Hallgrímskirkja's tower is enclosed. A lagoon works in rain if you have the time and a booked slot. Hlemmur Mathöll and the Grandi food hall are good covered places for lunch.
