Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerMost ships dock at the Gare Maritime on Quai L'Herminier or the cruise mole next to it, 0.3–0.5 km from Place Foch and the old town, a 5–10 minute walk. Larger ships sometimes anchor and tender into the same central port area. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 minutes if your ship is tendering.

Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeAjaccio is Corsica's capital and Napoleon's birthplace, and its cruise berths sit on the edge of the old town. Place Foch, the market, the cathedral and the Maison Bonaparte are all within a short, flat walk. The Pointe de la Parata, with its Genoese tower facing the Sanguinaires islands, is 11 km west and reached by bus line 5, the seasonal tourist train or a boat trip. Many shops close for lunch, roughly 12:30–14:30, and the Maison Bonaparte is closed on Mondays, so check the day of your call.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 minutes if your ship is tendering. From La Parata, start back at least 2 hours before all-aboard.
The centre is a short walk, so the main risks are heavy traffic on the coast road back from La Parata and tender queues on days when a ship anchors. If you take the bus to La Parata, catch an early return rather than the last useful one.
If you're running late
From La Parata or the western beaches, take a taxi to the port. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.
Ships normally dock, but whether a ship docks or anchors depends on its size, berth allocation and other port traffic. Larger ships sometimes anchor in the gulf and tender passengers to the central port area by the Gare Maritime, from where the walk into town is the same. Tendering adds time in each direction; ask the ship how long to allow.

Skip the ship tour for Ajaccio itself: the old town, the market, the cathedral and the Maison Bonaparte are all a short flat walk from the pier, and the tourist office runs its own guided walk ending at the Maison Bonaparte. A ship tour makes more sense for inland Corsica or a long coastal drive, where heavy traffic makes a self-guided return risky. For La Parata, the bus or tourist train is fine on a long call; on a short call or a tender day, a ship tour or a fixed-price taxi is safer.
Planning the Maison Bonaparte on a Monday.
Instead: It is closed on Mondays. Check the day of your call and swap in the Palais Fesch or La Parata.
Arriving at shops or the museum at 12:45.
Instead: Many shops close roughly 12:30–14:30 and the Maison Bonaparte closes 12:30–13:15. Do your visits in the morning and eat at midday.
Assuming your ship will dock because the last one did.
Instead: Larger ships sometimes anchor and tender. Check your daily programme and add 30 minutes to your return if tendering.
Leaving La Parata on the last bus that might get you back.
Instead: The coast road is busy. Start back at least 2 hours before all-aboard, or take a taxi.
Expecting to tour the citadel.
Instead: It is under rehabilitation; see it from outside and spend the time in the old town instead.
Ajaccio is a straightforward port day. The main hazards are summer heat, especially in July and August, and traffic on the busy waterfront roads; use the crossings. On the Parata trail, carry water and wear shoes with grip. Swim only at lifeguarded beaches in season.

Crowds
October 2026 alone has 28 scheduled cruise calls. Tour groups head for the Maison Bonaparte and Place Foch first. Go to the market early, visit the Maison Bonaparte right at opening or after the midday break, and leave the beaches and La Parata for the afternoon.
Accessibility
The walk from the Gare Maritime to Place Foch is short and flat. Some old town streets are stone-paved. The Maison Bonaparte and the Palais Fesch are both listed as accessible for people with reduced mobility. The Parata trail climbs to the tower and is not step-free. Muvistrada+ is a door-to-door service for people with limited mobility but requires registration in advance. On tender days, ask the ship whether wheelchair users can transfer.
If it rains
Ajaccio has good indoor options close to the port. Spend the morning in the Maison Bonaparte and the Palais Fesch, look into the cathedral, and browse the covered market on Place Campinchi. Skip La Parata and the boat trips.
