Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerLivorno is a working port, so most passengers take the Porto di Livorno 2000 shuttle bus to Piazza del Municipio, next to Piazza Grande. From there a LAM Blu bus (€2.00, 2026) or a taxi reaches Livorno Centrale, about 4 km from the port, for regional trains to Pisa (€3.00) or Florence (€11.40, about 70–90 minutes). For Florence, be on a train back at least 3.5 hours before all-aboard.

Open my full Livorno (Florence & Pisa) day, timed to 18:30 Get this for every port on your cruise, with alerts on the day Write about Livorno (Florence & Pisa)? Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeLivorno is the cruise gateway to Tuscany, not a destination most passengers stay in. Florence is about 90 km away and Pisa about 20 km. The berths sit inside a busy commercial port with no pedestrian route out, so every DIY day starts with the port shuttle and a short bus or taxi ride to Livorno Centrale. Pisa is the easy, low-risk option. Florence works by train but leaves little slack. Livorno itself, with its canals, central market and seafront terrace, suits a short call or a return visit.
Walkable? No
The cruise berths are inside a commercial port with heavy traffic and no pedestrian route to town. Take the port shuttle to Piazza del Municipio. From there, central Livorno is on foot, and Livorno Centrale station is a further 15–20 minutes' walk along Via Grande and Piazza della Repubblica, or a short bus ride.
Where your ship docks
Port shuttle (Porto di Livorno 2000)
Depends on your cruise line; check your daily programmeAbout 10–15 min to Piazza del Municipio
Runs for the whole time a ship is in port and drops at Via Cogorano, beside Piazza del Municipio and behind Piazza Grande. Return shuttles leave from the same place. There is no fixed timetable; buses leave as they fill, and queues build mid-morning on multi-ship days. Some lines include it; others charge.
LAM Blu bus to Livorno Centrale (Autolinee Toscane)
€2.00 urban single (from 1 August 2026)About 5–10 min
Catch it near Piazza Grande towards 'Stazione'. Buy the ticket before boarding from a newsstand or tabaccheria in Piazza Grande and validate it on board.
Regional train to Pisa Centrale (Trenitalia)
€3.00 one way (2026)About 15–20 min
About 20 km. Frequent regional trains. For the Leaning Tower, walk 20–30 minutes (just under 2 km) from Pisa Centrale, or take the LAM Rossa bus towards the Torre stop (€2.00 urban ticket, 2026). Pisa San Rossore station is about 5 minutes' walk from the Piazza if your connection stops there.
Regional train to Firenze Santa Maria Novella (Trenitalia)
€11.40 one way (2026)About 70–90 min; fastest about 68 min
Regionale Veloce trains are the fastest. Paper tickets must be validated in the platform machines before boarding; digital tickets bought in the Trenitalia app do not need stamping. SMN station is a short walk from the Duomo. Check Trenitalia and RFI notices for weekend engineering work on the Pisa–Empoli section.
Regional train to Lucca
Regional fare; check in the Trenitalia appAbout 40–60 min, usually with one change
Lucca's walled centre starts a few minutes' walk from the station. A calmer alternative to Pisa or Florence.
Taxi
Agree the fare before you startAbout 10 min port to Livorno Centrale
Taxis wait at the terminals and at a rank in Piazza Grande. Drivers inside the port often try to sell full-day Tuscany tours; if you only want the station, say so first.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
From Florence, be on a train out of Santa Maria Novella at least 3.5 hours before all-aboard (15:00 for an 18:30 all-aboard). From Pisa, be on a train back 2 hours before. From central Livorno, be at the shuttle stop 75 minutes before.
The train from Florence takes 70–90 minutes. Add the bus or taxi from Livorno Centrale to Piazza del Municipio (about 10–15 minutes), the shuttle queue and ride (30 minutes or more when several ships are in), and 90 minutes on board before all-aboard because the return depends on a train.
If you're running late
If a train is cancelled, take the next regional or ask at the ticket office for an alternative via Pisa. From Livorno Centrale a taxi to the port takes about 10 minutes. Call the port agent number printed in your daily programme if you might be late; independent travellers are not waited for.

Pisa does not need an excursion: the train is short and frequent. Florence is different. A DIY day gives about four to five hours in the city once the shuttle, bus and train are counted, and the return has no slack if a train is cancelled. The ship's coach or a 'Florence on your own' transfer is worth it for first-time visitors on a short call, anyone with limited mobility, and on Italian rail strike days. A ship tour that combines Florence and Pisa in one day spends a lot of it on the motorway.
Trying to walk out of the port.
Instead: The berths are in a working commercial port with no safe pedestrian route. Use the shuttle.
Walking from Piazza Grande to the station with no time to spare.
Instead: It is 15–20 minutes on foot. Take the LAM Blu bus or a taxi when you need to save time.
Boarding a regional train with an unvalidated paper ticket.
Instead: Stamp it in the platform machine before you board, or buy a digital ticket in the Trenitalia app.
Turning up at the Leaning Tower without a booking or late for the slot.
Instead: Book a timed ticket on opapisa.it and arrive 15 minutes before. Late arrivals are not admitted or refunded.
Planning Florence on a Monday around the Uffizi or the Accademia.
Instead: Both close on Mondays. Do the Duomo, Piazza della Signoria and the Ponte Vecchio instead, or choose Pisa or Lucca.
Catching the last convenient train back from Florence.
Instead: Aim for a train 3.5 hours before all-aboard. Shuttle queues on multi-ship days can take as long as the bus ride.
The main risks are pickpockets on crowded regional trains, at Firenze Santa Maria Novella and around the Ponte Vecchio, and in the crowds at Piazza dei Miracoli. Keep bags closed and in front of you, and phones out of back pockets. Central Livorno is ordinary and safe by day. Do not walk inside the commercial port: lorries and cargo handling make it dangerous.

Crowds
Several ships often call at Livorno on the same day, and shuttle queues build from mid-morning; leave early or late. Florence's Accademia, Uffizi and the Duomo square are busiest late morning; book timed slots. Leaning Tower slots are limited and sell out weeks ahead from April to October. The cathedral in Florence is closed on Sundays, which pushes crowds elsewhere.
Accessibility
Wheelchair users depend on the port shuttle; ask the cruise line in advance whether an accessible vehicle is available. Livorno Centrale, Pisa Centrale and Firenze Santa Maria Novella are large stations, but regional trains often have steps and assistance has to be booked ahead with Trenitalia. The Leaning Tower climb is narrow and stepped, and closed to children under 8. Florence's centre is flat but crowded with uneven paving. For limited mobility, the ship's coach to Pisa or Florence is the realistic choice.
If it rains
Florence is the best wet-weather option: the Uffizi and the Accademia (both closed Mondays) and the free cathedral take up a full day. In Pisa, the cathedral, Camposanto and museums are indoors, although the Tower's top is exposed. In Livorno, the Acquario and the Mercato Centrale are covered.

Your whole cruise, planned like this
The day plan above assumes a 18:30 all-aboard. Your ship's times will differ, and so will every other stop. Pro builds the plan from your ship's real times: a timed day in Livorno (Florence & Pisa) and every other port, a leave-by time for each stop, and a Plan B if you run late. Ultimate adds a live leave-by countdown from where you are on the day. Every plan uses the same checked facts as this guide. Nothing is made up.
