Naples Cruise Port

Quick answerShips dock at the Stazione Marittima on Molo Angioino, right in the city; Piazza del Plebiscito is 10–15 minutes on foot and Spaccanapoli about 15–20. For Pompeii, take metro Line 1 to Garibaldi and the Circumvesuviana Sorrento line to Pompei Scavi: €3.30 and about 35 minutes (2026). Be back on board 90 minutes before all-aboard if your return depends on the train.

Why this recommendation?

Pompeii is reachable without ship-excursion pricing when rail timing is planned in advance.

Main caveat: Heat, mobility, or same-day rail disruption makes the station transfer unsuitable.

Transport: Port of Naples (Stazione Marittima, Molo Angioino) to the historic centre

Naples is one of the few big Mediterranean ports where you step off the ship into the city centre. Castel Nuovo is across the road and the old town is a 15-minute walk. The decision is how to split the day between Naples itself and the sites around the bay: Pompeii and Herculaneum by the Circumvesuviana commuter train, or Capri and Sorrento by ferry from Molo Beverello next door. The train is cheap but crowded and old, so leave a wide margin.

Walkable? Yes · about 15 min (1.2 km)

Flat walk from the terminal past Castel Nuovo to Piazza del Plebiscito and Galleria Umberto I (10–15 minutes), or up Via Toledo and into Spaccanapoli (about 15–20 minutes). Pavements are uneven and traffic is heavy; cross at lights. The Archaeological Museum is about 10 minutes beyond Spaccanapoli, uphill.

Where your ship docks

  • Stazione Marittima (Molo Angioino) · 1 km to the centre — Main cruise terminal, run by Terminal Napoli, with shops and a pharmacy inside. Castel Nuovo and Piazza Municipio are directly opposite; Municipio metro (Line 1) is a few minutes' walk.
  • Molo Beverello · 1 km to the centre — Next door. Hydrofoils and fast ferries to Capri, Sorrento and Ischia leave from here. Not the cruise terminal, though cruisers often confuse the two.

Walk

Free10–20 min to the historic centre

The simplest way into Naples. Turn right out of the terminal for Piazza del Plebiscito, or cross Piazza Municipio and head up Via Toledo for Spaccanapoli.

Metro Line 1 (ANM)

Single and 90-minute tickets about €1.30–1.80; check at the machineAbout 5 min Municipio to Garibaldi

Municipio station is a few minutes from the terminal. Line 1 runs to Duomo and Garibaldi (for the Circumvesuviana and the main railway station) and to Toledo and Museo. Several stations are known for their art design.

Circumvesuviana (EAV) to Pompeii

€3.30 one way (2026)About 35 min Garibaldi to Pompei Scavi

Take the Sorrento line from Napoli Garibaldi (underground platforms, usually platform 3, stairs only) or from Porta Nolana, its first stop. Get off at Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri, about 50 m from the Porta Marina entrance; not Pompei Santuario. Trains run about every 30 minutes. Tap a contactless card or phone in and out at the gates, or validate a paper ticket at the yellow machines; fines for unvalidated tickets are around €50. Trains are often crowded and only newer ones have air conditioning.

Campania Express (EAV)

€18.30 one way, including €15 supplement (2026)About 30 min to Pompei Scavi

Tourist service on the same line with reserved seats and air conditioning. Runs mid-March to mid-October, with only four departures in each direction, so fit the day around its timetable.

Taxi

Fixed tourist fares exist for main destinations; ask for the fixed fare before you startVaries with traffic

White licensed taxis wait at the terminal. Naples traffic is slow; for Pompeii the train is usually as quick.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

From Pompeii, catch a train back no later than 3 hours before all-aboard (14:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard). From the old town, start walking back 75 minutes before.

The train is about 35 minutes, plus the metro from Garibaldi and the walk to the terminal (about 25 minutes together), and trains run only every 30 minutes. Strikes and breakdowns on the Circumvesuviana are not rare. From Spaccanapoli the walk is 15–20 minutes, but allow for heat and crowds.

If you're running late

If a train is cancelled, take the next one; if the line is down, take a licensed taxi from Pompei Scavi and agree the fare first. In Naples, the terminal is walkable from anywhere central. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you will be late.

Naples itself needs no excursion. For Pompeii, the train works for confident travellers on a weekday with no strike, but the ship's coach is worth it in July and August heat, on a rail strike day, for anyone who struggles with stairs and crowded trains, or if you want Pompeii and Vesuvius together, which is hard to do by public transport in one call. The Amalfi Coast is too far for a safe independent day.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Naples

Getting off at Pompei Santuario.

Instead: Stay on to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri; the entrance is right by the station.

Buying Pompeii tickets from a non-official site or tout.

Instead: Since March 2026 only Vivaticket via the official site issues valid tickets. They are named, so book in the name of each visitor.

Turning up at Pompeii without a ticket in summer.

Instead: Daily entries are capped at 20,000, mostly in the morning window; book a few days ahead.

Not validating a paper Circumvesuviana ticket.

Instead: Stamp it in the yellow machine or use tap-in, tap-out with a contactless card.

Visiting Cappella Sansevero or MANN on a Tuesday.

Instead: Both close on Tuesdays (Sansevero opens some summer Tuesdays). Check before you plan.

Cutting the return from Pompeii fine.

Instead: Trains run every 30 minutes and can be cancelled. Be on a train three hours before all-aboard.

Safety: is Naples safe for cruise passengers?

Naples has a reputation that exceeds the reality for daytime visitors, but petty theft is common. Pickpockets work around Garibaldi station, on the Circumvesuviana and in crowded old-town streets. Bag and phone snatches from scooters happen; keep phones away from the kerb side. The port area, Via Toledo and the old town are busy and generally safe in daylight. Traffic is the most immediate danger: cross at lights and watch for scooters on pavements.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Unofficial guides and ticket sellers outside Pompeii and near the stations offering tours or 'skip-the-line' entry. Buy tickets only through the official site; touts' tickets may not scan, as tickets are named.
  • Taxis that do not start the meter or quote inflated fares to Pompeii or the port. Use white licensed taxis and ask for the fixed tourist fare before you start.
  • Pickpocketing on the Circumvesuviana, especially at Garibaldi and on crowded carriages. Keep bags zipped and in front.
  • Street sellers near Garibaldi offering 'new' phones or electronics that turn out to be fakes or empty boxes. Do not buy on the street.

Practical information

Crowds

Pompeii is busiest from late morning, when coach groups arrive; the 09:00–13:00 window takes up to 15,000 of the 20,000 daily entries. Arriving at opening helps. Free first Sundays sell out fast. Circumvesuviana trains are fullest at weekday rush hours (roughly 07:30–09:00 and 17:30–19:00). In Naples, Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali are packed at lunchtime and the best-known pizzerias have queues; eat early or late.

Accessibility

The Stazione Marittima is the easiest step-free point in the port. The walk to Piazza del Plebiscito is flat but pavements are uneven and kerbs high. Garibaldi's Circumvesuviana platforms are reported to have stairs only, and trains have steps, so Pompeii by train is difficult for wheelchair users. Pompeii's streets are rough basalt with high kerbs. A ship coach tour or an adapted taxi is the realistic choice for limited mobility.

If it rains

The National Archaeological Museum is the best wet-day plan: it holds the finest objects from Pompeii and Herculaneum (closed Tuesdays). Cappella Sansevero, the Royal Palace and Galleria Umberto I are also indoors or covered. Pompeii in heavy rain is slippery and exposed. Underground tours of the old city also work in rain.

Quick Answer

"How much time do you REALLY need in Naples from a cruise ship?"

For a realistic Naples port day, you need at least 6 hours ashore — but more importantly, you need to leave the last attraction by 3:30pm for a 5pm all-aboard. The journey from Naples to the port takes 35–55 minutes depending on traffic.

35–55 min return€5.80 train DIY€120 ship excursion avg90min safety buffer

Recommendation: Choose ONE: Naples city OR Pompeii. Never both. Pompeii adds 90 minutes transit each way and requires 3 hours minimum on site.

Most common mistake: Booking a Pompeii AND Naples city tour on the same day. You will be racing the entire time and arriving at the port sweating.
