Rostock-Warnemünde Cruise Port

Quick answerMost ships dock at the Warnemünde Cruise Center (berths P7 and P8), about 500 m or five minutes on foot from Warnemünde station, with the beach and the old harbour on the doorstep. Rostock's centre is about 20 minutes away by S-Bahn, which runs every 7.5–15 minutes; a single costs €3.20 and a day ticket €8.00 (2026). Berlin is not a realistic do-it-yourself trip: the fastest train in DB's October 2026 timetable took 2 hours 46 minutes between Rostock and Berlin with changes, so you would need to leave Berlin 5 hours before all-aboard.

Transport: Warnemünde Cruise Center (Rostock Port) to Warnemünde

Warnemünde is Rostock's seaside district at the mouth of the Warnow. The cruise terminal sits beside the station, the Alter Strom harbour, the lighthouse and a broad sandy beach, so a relaxed day needs no transport at all. Rostock's Hanseatic centre is a short S-Bahn ride away. Many cruise lines sell this call as 'Berlin'. Rostock Port quotes about 2 hours, but DB's own route pages for late October 2026 showed no direct train between Rostock and Berlin and journeys of 2 hours 46 minutes to 4 hours 31 minutes, before the S-Bahn leg to Warnemünde. Some ships use berths in Rostock's Seehafen instead, which are not within walking distance of Warnemünde.

Walkable? Yes · about 5 min (0.5 km)

From P7/P8 it is about five minutes to Warnemünde station, and the Alter Strom, lighthouse and beach are all a short walk. Rostock needs the S-Bahn. If your ship is at the Seehafen, you cannot walk to Warnemünde.

Where your ship docks

  • Warnemünde Cruise Center, Am Passagierkai 3 (berths P7 and P8) · 0.5 km to the centre — Main cruise terminal, about 500 m (five minutes) on foot from Warnemünde station. Rostock Port describes it as accessible with facilities for disabled passengers; assistance on request. No parking during ship calls.
  • Warnemünde berths P1–P4 — Further Warnemünde berths listed by Rostock Port, also used for cruise calls. Check your berth in the ship's daily programme.
  • Rostock Seehafen (LP31, LP41) — Berths in the industrial seaport. Not walkable to Warnemünde; use the ship's shuttle or transfer. By public transport, Rostock Port gives the S-Bahn to Lütten Klein, then bus 45 or 49.

DB's route pages for late October 2026 showed no direct trains between Rostock and Berlin, with one or two changes and journey times of 2 h 46 min to 4 h 31 min. Summer timetables can differ, so check bahn.com for your date. Rostock Port's own figure of about 2 hours does not match the October 2026 timetable. Germany has regular transport strikes.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back on board 90 minutes before all-aboard if you have been to Rostock or further. From Rostock's centre, leave 2 hours before all-aboard. From Berlin by train, leave Berlin at least 5 hours before all-aboard, and only on a connection that bahn.com shows reaching Warnemünde at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Warnemünde itself is low risk: the beach and harbour are minutes from the gangway. Rostock is easy with frequent S-Bahn trains. Berlin is the problem. On the fastest October 2026 connection (2 h 46–47 min between Rostock and Berlin Hbf, plus about 20 min on the S-Bahn and a possible wait at Rostock), a 17:30 all-aboard means leaving Berlin by 12:30. Leaving the ship around 08:30, the earliest you could reach Berlin is around midday, so you would have well under an hour in the city. Slower connections make the trip impossible.

If you're running late

If the S-Bahn is disrupted, take a taxi from Rostock to Am Passagierkai 3. If a Berlin train is late or cancelled, call the port agent number in your daily programme immediately and be ready to travel on to the next port at your own cost.

For Berlin, book the ship's excursion or nothing: the train journey alone takes most of the day, and the ship waits for its own groups but not for you. Do not bother with a tour for Warnemünde or Rostock; the beach and harbour are at the terminal and the S-Bahn is frequent. A day split between Rostock and Warnemünde is relaxed and cheap.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Rostock-Warnemünde

Doing Berlin by train on your own.

Instead: Take the ship's excursion. With a 17:30 all-aboard you must leave Berlin by 12:30, and the earliest you can arrive is around midday.

Trusting the 'about 2 hours to Berlin' figure.

Instead: DB's October 2026 timetable showed no direct trains and 2 h 46 min at best between Rostock and Berlin. Check bahn.com for your date.

Assuming your ship is at Warnemünde.

Instead: Some ships use the Rostock Seehafen berths, which are not walkable. Check your berth and the shuttle arrangements.

Ignoring strike notices.

Instead: Germany has regular transport strikes. Check the news the day before and allow extra time.

Planning to leave luggage at the terminal on turnaround day.

Instead: The port has no luggage storage. Use the lockers at Warnemünde station.

Safety: is Rostock-Warnemünde safe for cruise passengers?

Warnemünde and Rostock are generally safe for visitors. Canada's travel advice asks visitors to Germany to exercise a high degree of caution because of the threat of terrorism, mainly in crowded places such as transport hubs and tourist sites. The everyday risk is pickpocketing on trains, at stations and in crowds, where organised groups use distraction; passport thefts on trains rise in the holiday seasons. Keep documents zipped away on the S-Bahn and on long-distance trains. Avoid unsecured public Wi-Fi for payments. On the beach and the moles, watch the wind and follow lifeguard flags.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Distraction pickpocketing on trains and at stations: organised groups distract you while a bag or passport is taken. Keep valuables in a zipped inside pocket.
  • Compromised public Wi-Fi: criminals use open networks to capture card details. Use mobile data for payments.

Practical information

Crowds

Warnemünde often has more than one large ship in, and the station and the first S-Bahn trains fill early. Go to Rostock first and come back to the beach in the afternoon. The Alter Strom is busiest at lunchtime; eat a little earlier or later.

Accessibility

Rostock Port describes the Warnemünde Cruise Center as accessible with facilities for disabled passengers, and assistance is available on request; confirm step-free access with your cruise line. The walk to the station, the Alter Strom and the promenade is short and flat. The lighthouse has to be climbed. The terminal has no parking during ship calls, so arrange taxis or transfers in advance. Rostock Port refers detailed questions to the cruise lines.

If it rains

Stay close: the Heimatmuseum (closed Mondays), the Teepott and the cafés of the Alter Strom are all a few minutes from the ship, and harbour boat tours from the Alter Strom have covered seating. Or take the S-Bahn to Rostock for the Marienkirche and its astronomical clock. Skip the Westmole and the lighthouse in strong wind or rain.
