Status and sourcesThessaloniki is a big working city, and the port sits on the edge of its centre. You leave through the port gates into the old warehouse district of Ladadika, then reach a long, flat waterfront that runs to the White Tower. Most of the Roman and Byzantine sights, the markets and Aristotelous Square are within walking distance. The Upper Town (Ano Poli) and its walls are uphill and best reached by taxi. The new metro, opened in November 2024, runs under the centre and has Roman street remains on show at Venizelou station.
Walkable? Yes · about 10 min
About 10 minutes on foot to the centre, 15 to the White Tower and 20 to the Archaeological Museum. The first stretch through the port area is plain; the waterfront beyond is flat. The Upper Town and some market lanes are hilly and uneven.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be back at the ship 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave the White Tower 75 minutes before and the Upper Town (by taxi) 90 minutes before.
The walk from the White Tower to the berth is about 15 minutes, but you still have to pass the port gates and security. City traffic slows taxis in the late afternoon, which matters most from the Upper Town and for any trip out of the city.
If you're running late
Take a taxi to the port gate and show your cruise card. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Skip the ship tour for the city: the waterfront, the White Tower, the Rotunda, Agios Dimitrios and the Archaeological Museum are all walkable from the berth. A panoramic tour is worth it only if you cannot walk far and want the Upper Town walls without arranging a taxi. Take the ship's tour for Vergina or Pella: both are outside the city, traffic is unpredictable, and the ship waits for its own coaches.
Planning a market visit on a Sunday.
Instead: Modiano and Kapani are closed on Sundays. Swap in the waterfront and the Upper Town.
Walking up to the Upper Town in the afternoon heat.
Instead: Take a taxi up and walk down, and leave the top 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Buying one ticket for a bus plus metro journey.
Instead: A single ticket covers transfers only within the same mode for 70 minutes. Bus and metro need two tickets, or buy the €2.50 24-hour ticket (2026).
Going to Vergina or Pella independently on a short call.
Instead: Both are outside the city and traffic is unpredictable. Use the ship's tour or allow a large buffer.
Expecting an app taxi to collect you at the port gate.
Instead: Walk to the street or use a taxi rank, and confirm the meter is on.
Thessaloniki is generally safe for visitors. The main risk is theft: passports, wallets and handbags are stolen in crowded places, on public transport and in the markets. Keep valuables split up and zipped away. Carry ID, because the police may not accept a photocopy. Summer heat is serious, so carry water and avoid steep walks at midday. Wildfire risk is high from April to October; never discard cigarettes or glass.
Scams and tourist traps
Emergency number: 112
Crowds
The White Tower admits only 70 people at once, so visit at opening, before tour groups arrive. Thessaloniki is a large city, so cruise passengers spread out quickly once they leave the waterfront. If one sight is busy, the next is a short walk away.
Accessibility
The waterfront and the route from the port to Aristotelous Square are mostly flat, though the port exit varies by berth. The Upper Town and some market lanes are steep and uneven and are hard going for wheelchair users. The White Tower's upper floors are reached by a 92-step spiral stair; visitors who cannot climb can take a virtual tour at information stations on the ground floor, which has no toilets. The crypt at Agios Dimitrios has slippery stairs.
If it rains
Spend the day indoors in the centre: the Archaeological Museum (open 09:00–17:00), the White Tower, the Rotunda and Agios Dimitrios. The covered Modiano Market works in the rain, except on Sundays. Skip the Upper Town, where wet cobbles are slippery.

Your whole cruise, planned like this
The day plan above assumes a 17:30 all-aboard. Your ship's times will differ, and so will every other stop. Pro builds the plan from your ship's real times: a timed day in Thessaloniki and every other port, a leave-by time for each stop, and a Plan B if you run late. Ultimate adds a live leave-by countdown from where you are on the day. Every plan uses the same checked facts as this guide. Nothing is made up.
