Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerCabo San Lucas is a tender port: ships anchor in the bay and the tender ride into the marina takes 10–15 minutes. From the tender pier you can walk the marina and downtown, and reach Medano Beach, El Arco and Lover's Beach by water taxi or glass-bottom boat. Be back in the tender queue 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Status and sourcesCabo has no cruise terminal. Ships anchor off Land's End, in sight of El Arco, and tender passengers into the marina, which puts you in the middle of town. Everything most people want is on the water: the Arch and Lover's Beach by boat, Medano Beach on foot, snorkelling coves along the corridor by tour boat. The day is shaped by the tender. Queues on the ship are longer than the ride, so go ashore early, and return before the last-hour rush.
Walkable? Yes · about 15 min (0.8 km)
Flat waterfront walk of 10–15 minutes around the marina into the centre. Turn right from the tender pier towards the large hotel at the end of the marina and go through the wide opening to the main shopping street. Medano Beach starts beyond the far end of the marina; the walk is longer, so many people take a water taxi. In summer heat, take a taxi or water taxi.

Ruta del Desierto bus to San José del Cabo
About US$2–3 (2026)About 1 hour
The urban bus runs along the corridor between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, stopping at the main hotels. A taxi between the two towns costs around US$60–70 (2026).
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be in the tender queue at the marina by 15:00 for a 16:30 all-aboard (90 minutes before). Leave San José del Cabo by 13:30.
The tender ride is only 10–15 minutes, but queues build as everyone returns at once. Know the time of the last tender, which is earlier than all-aboard. From Lover's Beach or El Arco you depend on a boat collecting you, so book a pick-up at least 30 minutes before you want to be at the tender pier. The bus from San José del Cabo takes about an hour and stops along the corridor. Rough weather can also stop the tenders: in October 2026 a Carnival call was cancelled because the water shuttles were unsafe.
If you're running late
From Medano Beach, walk or take a water taxi to the marina. From the corridor or San José del Cabo, take a taxi (about US$60–70 between the towns). If you will miss the last tender, call the port agent number on your daily programme immediately.
Ships anchor offshore in the bay and tender passengers to a pier just inside the marina. The ride takes 10–15 minutes. Tenders may be open or enclosed depending on the line. The wait to board on the ship is usually the longest part, especially in the first hour; queues are typically shorter after lunch. The tender pier has a few vendors, an ATM and an information booth with free maps. Wheelchair users may not be able to go ashore if conditions make tender transfers unsafe.
Assumes the ship anchors at 07:00, first tenders ashore by 07:30, departure at 17:00 and all-aboard at 16:30, as on Carnival's October 2026 schedule. Check your own ship's times.
07:30 Tender ashore. Pick up a free map at the information booth on the tender pier.

Skip the ship tour for El Arco, Lover's Beach and Medano: they start a few minutes from the tender pier and the boats are easy to arrange yourself. Book a ship tour, or a reputable operator with a fixed return, for snorkelling trips to Santa María or Chileno and for whale watching, where you are out on the water for hours. San José del Cabo is an hour away by bus; on a short tender call, the ship's tour removes the transport risk.
Queueing for the first tender with everyone else.
Instead: Either be at the very front or wait until the rush clears; the ride itself is only 10–15 minutes.
Swimming at Divorce Beach.
Instead: Cross back to Lover's Beach on the bay side. The Pacific side has strong rip currents.
Getting into a water taxi without agreeing the pick-up time.
Instead: Agree the fare, the drop-off and the return time before you board, and keep the boat's name or number.
Returning to the marina 30 minutes before all-aboard.
Instead: Join the tender queue 90 minutes before. The last tender leaves before all-aboard.
Exchanging money at street booths or using card everywhere.
Instead: Bring small US notes or pesos. Booths and ATMs charge high fees, and some businesses add about 5% for cards.
The US State Department rates Baja California Sur at Level 2, 'Exercise increased caution', because of crime (advisory of 29 May 2026), with no specific restrictions on travel there. The marina, downtown and Medano Beach are busy tourist areas. The main hazard is the sea: many Los Cabos beaches have strong surf, rips and undertows. Swim at Medano, Lover's Beach on the bay side, Santa María or Chileno, and obey the beach flags. Drink bottled or ship water, avoid ice of unknown origin, and use sun protection.
Scams and tourist traps
Emergency number: 911
Crowds
The first hour of tendering is the slowest; going ashore after the rush, or after lunch, often means a shorter queue. Boats to El Arco are busiest mid-morning when tour groups go out; an early boat is calmer. Medano Beach fills around midday. On the return, queues peak in the last hour before the final tender.
Accessibility
Cabo is a tender port, and lines may refuse wheelchair users going ashore when tender transfers are not safe; ask the ship early on the day. Once ashore, the marina boardwalk is flat and the main route to downtown is level. Beaches are soft sand, and boarding a water taxi or glass-bottom boat usually means a step down from the dock. Confirm step-free transport before booking a tour.
If it rains
Rain is rare and falls mainly from July to September, when storms can also stop the tenders. On a grey day, use the marina, the Puerto Paraíso mall, Plaza Amelia Wilkes and the natural history museum, and long lunches near the tender pier.

Your whole cruise, planned like this
The day plan above assumes a 16:30 all-aboard. Your ship's times will differ, and so will every other stop. Pro builds the plan from your ship's real times: a timed day in Cabo San Lucas and every other port, a leave-by time for each stop, and a Plan B if you run late. Ultimate adds a live leave-by countdown from where you are on the day. Every plan uses the same checked facts as this guide. Nothing is made up.
