Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerSkagway is a docking port with four berths. From the Broadway and Ore Terminal docks you walk into town in roughly 5–15 minutes; access to the Railroad Dock is restricted because of an active rockslide zone, so ships there bus passengers off the aft berth and tender them from the forward berth. Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard from town, 75–105 minutes if your ship is at the Railroad Dock, and leave a 90-minute margin after the White Pass train.

Where people get it wrong: Booking the White Pass train independently on a departure that returns too close to all-aboard, or not allowing for the bus or tender at the Railroad Dock.

Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeSkagway is a small gold-rush town at the head of Lynn Canal, laid out on a simple grid with most of its sights on or near Broadway. Most visitors come for the White Pass & Yukon Route railway, which climbs from tidewater to the 2,888 ft summit in 2.5–3 hours. Your berth shapes the rest of the day. The Railroad Dock, which holds two of the four berths, sits beside an active slide zone, so passengers there cannot simply walk off. The 2026 schedule listed 523 calls and about 1.31 million passengers between 30 April and early October, with most ships arriving between 06:00 and 07:00.
Walkable? Yes · about 15 min
Town is flat and compact. From the Broadway Dock it is about five minutes to the main street; allow up to 15 minutes from the farther walking berths. Coloured shapes painted on the path mark the route from each dock. From the Railroad Dock you cannot walk off: use the bus or tender your ship provides.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard if you walk from town to the Broadway or Ore Terminal Dock. If your ship is at the Railroad Dock, be at the ship's bus pick-up 75 minutes before, or at the tender landing 105 minutes before. After the Summit train, keep at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.
The Railroad Dock rules include the 15-minute walk plus a standard buffer for a bus transfer or a tender, not a measured queue time, so follow any earlier last-boat time your ship gives. The Summit train runs to a fixed timetable and takes up to 3 hours, so only book a departure that returns well inside that 90-minute margin.
If you're running late
If a train or independent tour is running late, tell the guide your all-aboard time and call the port agent number on your daily programme. Ship-sold rail tours are tracked by the ship.
Not a tender port in the usual sense, but the Municipality's alternative disembarkation for the Railroad Dock means ships at the forward berth (RRF) tender passengers ashore, and ships at the aft berth (RRA) bus them. Ask your ship where the tender lands and how often it runs.
Assumes the ship docks at 07:00 at the Broadway or Ore Terminal Dock and all-aboard is 17:30. White Pass departure times were not published on the railway's website for 2026, so the plan does not fix a train time: fit your booked departure into the morning block.
07:30 Walk to the Klondike Gold Rush visitor centre at 2nd and Broadway. Collect a free timed ticket for the Jeff. Smiths Parlor Museum and check the day's ranger programme.
08:00 Walk Broadway and the side streets of the historic district before the crowds peak.
09:00 Morning block: your Summit train if you booked one (2.5–3 hours, check your ticket for the time and boarding point). Without a train, walk out to Yakutania Point and back (1.6 miles, about an hour).
12:15 Lunch at the Red Onion Saloon, or a beer at Skagway Brewing Company or Klondike Brewing.
13:15 Jeff. Smiths Parlor Museum tour (30 minutes) at your ticket time, then the Moore House at 5th and Spring.
14:15 Walk to the Gold Rush Cemetery and Lower Reid Falls (4 miles round trip from 2nd and Broadway, about 2 hours), or take the SMART bus to the stop half a mile away.
15:45 Ships at the Railroad Dock: head for the tender landing now (forward berth) or the bus pick-up by 16:15 (aft berth).
16:30 Back on board at the Broadway or Ore Terminal Dock, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

The White Pass Summit train is the excursion most people take here, and booking it through the ship has real value if your line boards on the pier: you walk off the ship onto the train and the return is the ship's responsibility. Booking direct means checking in at the depot office and managing the timing yourself. The town, the national park sites, the Gold Rush Cemetery and the short trails are easy without a tour. Longer trains to Bennett and Carcross, and road trips into the Yukon, take 5–8 hours and cross into Canada; do them through the ship unless your call is long.
Assuming you can walk off the Railroad Dock.
Instead: Access is restricted because of the slide zone. Use the ship's bus (aft berth) or tender (forward berth) and start back earlier.
Buying a train ticket independently and expecting to board at the ship.
Instead: Third-party and ticket-office bookings check in and board at the White Pass depot office in town. Pier-side boarding is for ship-sold tours.
Leaving the passport on board for a Yukon trip.
Instead: The Summit Excursion needs none, but trips into Canada by train or road do.
Taking a train that returns close to all-aboard.
Instead: Choose a train that gets you back at least 90 minutes before all-aboard, and more if your ship is at the Railroad Dock.
Leaving the Jeff. Smiths Parlor tickets until the afternoon.
Instead: Tickets are free but limited; collect them at the visitor centre as soon as you come ashore.
Skagway is a small, safe town for visitors. The main hazard is the hillside above the Railroad Dock, an active slide zone that moves about 1 to 1.5 inches a year and had several rockslides in 2022; obey all barriers and restricted-access signs there. Trains run close to the docks, so use the marked crossings. It can be much colder at the summit than in town, so take a warm layer on the train. Trails such as Lower Reid Falls can be wet and rough. Emergency number 911.
Emergency number: 911
Crowds
The 2026 schedule listed 523 calls and about 1.31 million passengers, and on the busiest days more than 12,500 passengers were expected. Ships usually arrive between 06:00 and 07:00, so Broadway fills by mid-morning. Collect Jeff. Smiths tickets first, take an early train if you have one, and visit the cemetery while other passengers are on the trains. The Port of Skagway publishes the full schedule with daily passenger estimates.
Accessibility
Town is flat and compact, and the Broadway Dock is a short level walk from the main street. Ships at the Railroad Dock rely on buses or tenders, so ask the ship about accessible transfers, especially for the tender. The White Pass Summit Excursion is wheelchair accessible with lift-equipped cars, but space is limited; request the lift when booking. The Jeff. Smiths Parlor Museum tour is wheelchair accessible.
If it rains
The train runs in rain, though cloud can hide the summit. In town, the visitor centre, the Jeff. Smiths Parlor Museum and the Moore House are indoors, and the Red Onion Saloon and the two breweries are the obvious places to wait out a shower. The trail walks are slippery in the wet.

Your whole cruise, planned like this
The day plan above assumes a 17:30 all-aboard. Your ship's times will differ, and so will every other stop. Pro builds the plan from your ship's real times: a timed day in Skagway and every other port, a leave-by time for each stop, and a Plan B if you run late. Ultimate adds a live leave-by countdown from where you are on the day. Every plan uses the same checked facts as this guide. Nothing is made up.
