    Status and sources

Transport: Port of Funchal (Pontinha pier) to Funchal centre

Funchal is built on a steep amphitheatre of hills, and the best part of a cruise day here goes uphill. The cable car lifts you 560 m from the Old Town to Monte in about 15 minutes, and the wicker toboggans bring you part of the way down. The ship docks on a long breakwater with the town in full view, so the seafront walk in is flat and simple. Madeira has also started charging for its nature sites: a €5 fee at the Cabo Girão skywalk since January 2026, and a booked, paid slot on its official hiking trails, so a levada walk now needs planning before you arrive.

Walkable? Yes · about 20 min (1 km)

Walk off the Pontinha pier and east along the seafront promenade (Avenida do Mar) into the centre: about 1 km and 15–20 minutes, flat and paved, longer from a berth at the far end of the pier. The Mercado dos Lavradores and the cable car station in the Zona Velha are further east along the same seafront. Everything above the seafront is steep; use the cable car for Monte rather than walking up.

Where your ship docks

  • Funchal International Maritime Passenger Terminal (Pontinha pier) · 1 km to the centre — The passenger terminal sits on the Pontinha pier, a long breakwater on the western side of the bay. Cruise berths are the North Wharf and Piers 2, 3 and 8. All ships dock. A shuttle bus into town is sometimes offered for a small fee or included by the cruise line.

Walk along the seafront

Free15–20 min to the centre; allow 35 min or more to the Zona Velha

Flat promenade from the pier along Avenida do Mar. The easiest way to reach the cathedral area, the market and the cable car.

Funchal cable car (Teleférico do Funchal) to Monte

€16 one way, €22 return; glass-floor cabin €26 one way, €32 return (2026)About 15 min each way

Runs 3.2 km from the Zona Velha to Monte, climbing 560 m. The line closed from January to early April 2026 for an upgrade that added five glass-floor cabins and raised capacity to 900 people an hour. Closed on 25 December. Tickets are sold at the stations and online.

Botanical Garden cable car (Teleférico do Jardim Botânico)

Check prices at the station; combined tickets with the garden and the Funchal cable car are soldShort ride of about 1.6 km

Links Largo das Babosas in Monte with the Madeira Botanical Garden. Daily from 09:00, last boarding 16:50, closed on 25 December. Useful for a Monte–Botanical Garden loop.

Horários do Funchal city buses

Ticket on board or pre-purchasedVaries

Lines 20 and 21 run up to Monte from the start of Rua 31 de Janeiro in the centre; line 22 serves Babosas. A cheaper but slower alternative to the cable car, and a way back down after the toboggan.

Taxi, ship tour or local tour to Cabo Girão and the levadas

VariesAbout 20 min drive to Cabo Girão

Cabo Girão and most levada trailheads are outside Funchal. A taxi, a pre-booked local tour or the ship excursion is the practical way to reach them on a port day.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Start walking back from the Zona Velha 75 minutes before all-aboard (16:15 for a 17:30 all-aboard). From Monte, be on the cable car down at least 2 hours before all-aboard.

The walk from the Old Town to the far end of the Pontinha pier is the longest part of the day on foot, and the cable car can have queues in late afternoon on busy ship days. Out-of-town trips to Cabo Girão or a levada depend on road traffic on a mountainous island.

If you're running late

Take a taxi from a rank in the centre to the pier. If you are stuck on a levada or out of town, call the port agent number in your daily programme at once; the ship does not wait for independent travellers.

Funchal and Monte need no excursion: the cable car and toboggan are easy to do alone, and the toboggan is cheaper per person if two or three share a basket. An island tour is worth it if you want Cabo Girão, the mountains and a levada in one day, because roads are steep and slow and buses are not built around a cruise schedule. For a levada, use a local operator or the ship: the official trails now need a booked 30-minute entry slot, and an operator booking pays the lower fee.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Madeira

Turning up for a levada without a booked slot.

Instead: Book a 30-minute entry window on SIMplifica in advance, or go with a tour operator, which also pays the lower €3 fee.

Expecting the toboggan to take you back to town.

Instead: It covers about 2 km and stops partway down. Budget for a taxi or bus from the bottom.

Visiting the market on a Sunday or Saturday afternoon.

Instead: It is closed on Sundays and shuts around 14:00 on Saturdays. Go first thing.

Underestimating the walk back to the far end of the Pontinha pier.

Instead: From the Zona Velha allow 35–40 minutes. Start back 75 minutes before all-aboard.

Planning a mountain levada on a short call.

Instead: Roads are steep and slow. Keep to a short trail or take an organised tour with a guaranteed return.

Safety: is Madeira safe for cruise passengers?

Funchal is a safe city for visitors. Watch your belongings in the market and in queues at the cable car. The real risks are physical: steep streets, slippery cobbles and stones in wet weather, and levada paths with drops and narrow ledges. Wear proper shoes, carry water and a torch for any trail with tunnels, and check the trail is open before you go.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Inflated prices for exotic fruit at the Mercado dos Lavradores, with tasting slices offered before a large bag is weighed. Ask the price per kilo first and say how much you want.
  • Card terminals and ATMs offering to charge you in your home currency (dynamic currency conversion). Always choose euros.
  • Pickpocketing in crowded spots such as the market and the cable car queue. Keep bags zipped and in front.

Practical information

Crowds

The port is busiest in summer, October and December, and 31 December is the busiest day of the year, with ships in for the New Year fireworks. The cable car is busiest mid-morning when passengers arrive from the pier; ride early or after lunch. Levada trails now limit numbers through booked 30-minute entry slots.

Accessibility

The pier and the seafront promenade into town are flat and paved, and the centre along Avenida do Mar is level. Almost everything above the seafront is steep, including Monte and its gardens. The cable car is the only practical way to Monte without climbing; ask at the station about boarding with a wheelchair. Ships dock, so there is no tender transfer. The market has stairs down to the fish hall.

If it rains

Funchal weather can differ sharply from the mountains, and cloud often sits on Monte while the seafront is dry. The Mercado dos Lavradores is covered, and a Madeira wine tasting in the centre is an indoor option. Levada paths become slippery and some close after heavy rain; do not start one in bad weather.
