Porto Cruise Port

Quick answerShips dock at Leixões in Matosinhos, not in Porto itself; the Ribeira is about 9.5 km away. The easiest way in is a short walk to Matosinhos Sul and metro line A to Trindade (about 25 minutes), using a €0.60 Andante card loaded with single tickets (€1.40 for Z2, €1.85 for Z3 in 2026). For a 17:30 all-aboard, leave the Ribeira by 15:15.

Transport: Port of Leixões (Porto Cruise Terminal, Matosinhos) to the Ribeira and Baixa

Porto's cruise port is at Leixões, in the seaside town of Matosinhos at the mouth of the river Leça, not on the Douro. That means a 25-minute metro ride or a bus or taxi before you reach the old town. Once there, Porto is compact but steep: São Bento station sits at the top, the Ribeira riverfront at the bottom, and the port wine lodges are across the Dom Luís I bridge in Vila Nova de Gaia. Matosinhos itself has a long sandy beach a few minutes from the port gate and grilled-fish restaurants, which make a good short-call alternative.

Walkable? No (9.5 km)

The Ribeira is about 9.5 km from the South terminal, so walking to Porto is not practical. Matosinhos is walkable: the beach is about 5 minutes from the South Gate and the metro a short, flat walk. In Porto itself, the centre is compact but very hilly, with granite cobbles; going from São Bento down to the river is easy, coming back up is a climb.

Where your ship docks

  • Porto Cruise Terminal (South terminal, South Mole) · 9.5 km to the centre — The modern terminal on the south breakwater, Avenida General Norton de Matos 23, Matosinhos, with a 340 m quay for large ships. It is about 800 m out along the breakwater; a free port shuttle bus runs between the ship and the exit. From the South Gate, Matosinhos beach is about 5 minutes on foot and Matosinhos Sul metro station is a short, flat walk. The building is wheelchair accessible.
  • North terminal (Dock 1 North) — The older terminal on the north side of the harbour (Leça da Palmeira), with a 300 m quay for ships up to about 250 m. Cross the bridge over the harbour to Mercado metro station in Matosinhos for line A.

Andante card (Metro do Porto, STCP buses)

€0.60 for the blue card; single Z2 €1.40, Z3 €1.85; 24-hour Z2 €5.15, Z3 €6.65 (2026)Buy at metro station machines

A reusable paper card for occasional travellers. A single Z2 or Z3 ticket is valid for one hour from first validation, including changes. Each person needs their own card. Check the zone map at the station before buying, because the price depends on how many zones your journey crosses. Load ten singles and you get one free.

Metro line A (blue) from Matosinhos Sul or Mercado

Andante single (Z2 €1.40 or Z3 €1.85, 2026)About 25 min Matosinhos Sul to Trindade

Take line A towards Estádio do Dragão. From the South terminal use Matosinhos Sul; from the North terminal, Mercado. Trindade is the central interchange: change to line D for Aliados and São Bento, or walk downhill through Avenida dos Aliados. There are no turnstiles: tap your card on the yellow validator on the platform before every journey, including changes, or risk a fine. The metro is wheelchair accessible.

STCP bus 500

Andante card tapped on boarding, or a ticket from the driverAbout 40 min to São Bento, longer in traffic

Catch it on the beachfront road outside the port. It follows the Atlantic coast and the north bank of the Douro, past Foz, into the centre near São Bento. Slower than the metro but scenic, and useful if the metro is disrupted. STCP buses 502, 506 and 507 also serve the terminal area.

Cruise line shuttle

Varies by line; check your cruise plannerDepends on traffic

Some lines sell a coach shuttle to central Porto. It is not a free port service. Check the drop-off point and the last return time.

Taxi, Uber, Bolt

MeteredAbout 15–20 min to the centre outside rush hour

Taxis queue outside the South terminal on cruise days, and Uber and Bolt operate in Porto and Matosinhos. The quickest way back if you are running late. Use the meter or an app; do not accept a fixed price from a street driver.

Walk in Porto

FreeAbout 10–12 min across the Dom Luís I bridge

From the Ribeira, the lower deck of the Dom Luís I bridge has pavements to Vila Nova de Gaia and the port lodges. The upper deck carries metro line D and pedestrians, with views from the Serra do Pilar end.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

For a 17:30 all-aboard: leave the Ribeira or Gaia by 15:15 and be on a line A train at Trindade by 15:45.

The climb or line D ride from the Ribeira to Trindade takes 15–20 minutes, line A to Matosinhos Sul about 25 minutes, then the walk to the gate and the port shuttle along the breakwater. That puts you on board about 16:30, 60 minutes before all-aboard, with slack for a missed train.

If you're running late

Take a taxi, Uber or Bolt from the centre; the ride is about 15–20 minutes outside rush hour. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you will be late.

Porto is easy to do alone: the metro from Matosinhos is cheap and direct, and the old town and Gaia lodges are within walking distance of each other. A ship tour makes sense for the Douro Valley, which is too far to do safely by public transport on a port day, and for anyone who cannot manage the steep streets between São Bento and the river. A ship's Porto city tour mainly saves you the metro ride; check whether it includes a lodge tasting before paying for it.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Porto

Expecting to walk from the ship to Porto.

Instead: Leixões is in Matosinhos, about 9.5 km from the Ribeira. Take metro line A, bus 500 or a taxi.

Boarding the metro without validating.

Instead: There are no gates. Tap your Andante card on the yellow validator before each journey and each change; inspectors fine unvalidated riders.

Sharing one Andante card.

Instead: Each card can be used by only one person per journey. Buy one card per traveller.

Queuing at Livraria Lello without a voucher.

Instead: Entry is by Ticket-Voucher only. Buy a timed slot online before you arrive.

Leaving the climb back from the Ribeira until the last minute.

Instead: Allow 15–20 minutes to get from the river to Trindade, uphill or by line D, before the 25-minute ride to Matosinhos.

Using Euronet cash machines.

Instead: They add high fees. Use a bank's own cash machine (Multibanco) or pay by card.

Safety: is Porto safe for cruise passengers?

Porto is safe for day visitors. The main problem is pickpocketing in crowds: on and around the Dom Luís I bridge, in the Ribeira, at photo spots and on the historic trams. Keep phones and wallets in front pockets or a zipped bag. The steep, polished granite streets are slippery when wet, and falls are more likely than crime. At Matosinhos beach, respect the lifeguard flags.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Bridge jumpers on the Dom Luís I bridge in summer gather a crowd and ask for money before jumping; pickpockets work the crowd while everyone watches. Keep a hand on your bag.
  • 'Free' roses or trinkets pressed into your hand, followed by a demand for payment. Do not take anything offered.
  • Street sellers offering drugs in daylight; what they sell is often fake or cut. Say no and walk on.
  • Unofficial sellers of port tastings, boat trips and other tickets at suspiciously low prices; the tickets may be used or fake. Buy direct from the operator.
  • Euronet cash machines in tourist areas that charge high withdrawal and conversion fees. Use a bank's own machine and decline currency conversion.

Emergency number: 112

Practical information

Crowds

Livraria Lello is the biggest queue in town; a timed voucher bought online is the way round it. The Ribeira quay and the Dom Luís I bridge are busiest from late morning to late afternoon. Popular lodge tours in Gaia sell out in summer, so book ahead. Porto's tourist tax of €3 per person per night applies to overnight stays only, so it does not affect a day call.

Accessibility

The South terminal is wheelchair accessible and a port shuttle runs along the breakwater to the gate. The metro is wheelchair accessible, and the route from Matosinhos Sul is flat. Porto's old town is the problem: the streets between São Bento, the Sé and the Ribeira are steep, cobbled and stepped in places. Line D across the upper deck of the Dom Luís I bridge and taxis help avoid the worst climbs. For limited mobility, a ship coach tour is the practical choice.

If it rains

The port wine lodges in Gaia are indoors and fill a wet afternoon. Livraria Lello, São Bento station, the Sé and the Mercado do Bolhão are covered. The metro keeps you dry between Matosinhos and the centre. Take extra care on the granite streets, which become slippery.
