Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerMost large ships dock at Hernesaari, about 3.5–4 km from Market Square, so take the cruise shuttle (about 10 minutes) or tram 6; smaller ships use the South Harbour or Katajanokka, a 10–15 minute walk from the centre. An HSL AB single costs €3.30 in the app or €3.50 by contactless card (2026). From Hernesaari, be at the shuttle or tram in the centre 90 minutes before all-aboard.

Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeHelsinki is a city port with two very different arrivals. Small and mid-sized ships berth in the South Harbour or at Katajanokka, right beside Market Square, Uspenski Cathedral and Senate Square. Large ships, the great majority, use the Hernesaari quays on a peninsula south-west of the centre, which means a shuttle, a tram or an hour's walk along the coast. The centre is compact and flat, and the HSL ferry to the Suomenlinna sea fortress leaves from Market Square. Check your berth on the daily programme before you plan anything.
Walkable? Partly · about 60 min (4 km)
From the South Harbour and Katajanokka, yes: the centre is a 10–15 minute flat walk. From Hernesaari it is about 3.5–4 km; the coastal route past Kaivopuisto Park to Market Square takes up to an hour, with sea views and shore cafés. Most passengers at Hernesaari take the shuttle or tram 6.

Ship at Hernesaari: be at the shuttle stop or on tram 6 in the centre 90 minutes before all-aboard, and leave Suomenlinna 2 hours before. Ship at the South Harbour or Katajanokka: be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard.
Shuttle queues build in the last two hours, and the tram ride across town depends on traffic. The Suomenlinna ferry runs to a timetable, so a missed boat can cost you a long wait, especially outside summer.

Most visitors can do Helsinki alone: the centre is compact, trams and the Suomenlinna ferry are simple, and English is widely spoken. A ship tour makes sense if you want several spread-out sights (Temppeliaukio, the Sibelius Monument, the Olympic Stadium) in a short call, or for Porvoo, about 45 minutes' drive each way, where the ship's coach removes the return risk.
Assuming the ship docks next to Market Square.
Instead: Most large ships use Hernesaari, 3.5–4 km away. Check your berth and plan the shuttle or tram 6.
Paying by contactless when you make several trips.
Instead: Buy in the HSL app: an AB single is €3.30 in the app versus €3.50 by contactless (2026).
Leaving Suomenlinna on the last practical ferry.
Instead: Leave the island 2 hours before all-aboard if your ship is at Hernesaari; ferries run to a timetable.
Eating in the open at Market Square.
Instead: The gulls snatch food; eat under cover or in the Old Market Hall.
Visiting Temppeliaukio on Sunday morning.
Instead: It closes to sightseeing during the 10:00 Sunday service and for weddings and funerals; go another time.
Helsinki is a safe city for visitors. The main practical risks are weather, slippery surfaces in wet or icy months, and traffic and trams in the centre. Bring a windproof layer; Baltic weather changes quickly. Keep an eye on food at Market Square because of the gulls.
Emergency number: 112
Crowds
On peak summer days up to five ships can call, and shuttle queues at Hernesaari and the Market Square ferry pier build quickly. Take an early shuttle, go to Suomenlinna first, and do Senate Square and the cathedrals in the afternoon. Return to the shuttle stop before the late rush.
Accessibility
The central berths at the South Harbour and Katajanokka are a flat, short walk from Market Square. From Hernesaari, use the shuttle or tram 6 rather than the long coastal walk. The centre is largely flat. Suomenlinna is reached by ferry and has uneven, historic ground; check access with the operator before you go.
If it rains
Spend the time indoors: the Old Market Hall for lunch, Temppeliaukio Church, Helsinki Cathedral and Uspenski Cathedral. Suomenlinna is exposed in wind and rain; keep it for a dry day.

Your whole cruise, planned like this
The day plan above assumes a 17:30 all-aboard. Your ship's times will differ, and so will every other stop. Pro builds the plan from your ship's real times: a timed day in Helsinki and every other port, a leave-by time for each stop, and a Plan B if you run late. Ultimate adds a live leave-by countdown from where you are on the day. Every plan uses the same checked facts as this guide. Nothing is made up.
