Transport: Port of Tallinn, Old City Harbour (Vanasadam) cruise terminal to Tallinn Old Town

Tallinn is one of the easiest big ports in the Baltic: the medieval Old Town starts a short, flat walk from the gangway. The day splits naturally into the lower town around Town Hall Square and the upper town on Toompea hill, with its viewpoints and cathedrals. The cruise terminal at the Old City Harbour has an 850 m public rooftop promenade, and the ferry terminals A and D sit beside it, so follow signs for the cruise area rather than the ferries. On a long call, Kadriorg Palace and the Kumu art museum, about 4 km east, add a calmer half-day.

Walkable? Yes · about 20 min (1.2 km)

About 1–1.2 km, 15–20 minutes on a flat, paved route up Sadama Street to the Great Coast Gate (Suur Rannavärav) beside Fat Margaret's Tower. Use St Olaf's spire as a guide and the pedestrian crossings over the main road. Inside the Old Town the streets are cobbled, and Toompea is a 10–15 minute uphill walk.

Where your ship docks

  • Tallinn Cruise Terminal, Old City Harbour (Logi 4/2) · 1.1 km to the centre — Opened in 2021 on the north-western pier, with a 421 m berth for ships up to about 340 m. Information desk, souvenir shop, toilets, Wi-Fi, bicycle rental and taxis. The cruise-area gate is to the left of Terminal A's vehicle gate. An 850 m public rooftop promenade runs over the terminal (open 06:00–01:00).
  • Ferry terminals A and D (Old City Harbour) · 1.25 km to the centre — Ferry terminals beside the cruise area. Some guides describe ships berthing behind Terminal A or occasionally near Terminal D; from D the walk to the Old Town is about 200 m longer. Confirm your berth on board.

On foot

Free15–20 min to the Old Town

Leave the cruise gate, turn right onto Sadama Street and walk uphill towards the church spires, then cross to the Great Coast Gate by Fat Margaret's Tower.

Tram (line 2)

€2 for one hour by contactless bank card; day ticket €5.50 on an Ühiskaart card (2026)Short ride; stops about 500 m from the terminal

Tram 2 stops at Vanasadam and Linnahall, each about 500 m from the cruise terminal. Tap a contactless card on the validator every time you board; each tap buys a one-hour ticket, and taps in a day are capped at the day-ticket price. QR one-hour tickets are sold online and at machines in the cruise terminal and terminals A and D, but only validators with a QR scanner (often at the front) accept them. You cannot buy a ticket from the driver.

Taxi or Bolt

About €5–10 to the centre (independent guides, 2026)Short ride

Only contracted taxis (Tallink, Tulika) can drive to the terminal doors. Bolt and other app cars use the Kiss&Sail bays at terminals A and D. Bolt shows the fare upfront. Avoid street taxis touting near the ferry terminals.

Cruise shuttle

About €5–10 return where a line offers it (2026)A few minutes

Some cruise lines sell a shuttle; it is not needed for most people because the walk is short and flat.

Hop-on hop-off bus

About €20–25 for a day pass (2026)Varies

Runs in the cruise season and covers Toompea, Kadriorg Park, the Song Festival Grounds and the Russalka monument. Useful for Kadriorg if you do not want to use trams.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back at the cruise terminal 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave the Old Town 85 minutes before, and Kadriorg or Kumu 90 minutes before.

The walk back from Town Hall Square through the cobbled lanes to the Great Coast Gate and down Sadama Street takes 20–25 minutes, longer from Toompea. Ferry crowds at terminals A and D can slow the last stretch; keep to the cruise-area gate.

If you're running late

Book a Bolt to the Kiss&Sail bays at terminal A, or take a contracted taxi; the ride from the Old Town edge is short. If you will miss all-aboard, phone the port agent number on your daily programme at once.

A one-day plan for Tallinn (all aboard 17:30)

Assumes the ship docks at 08:00 and all-aboard is 17:30.

  1. 08:30 Walk from the cruise terminal up Sadama Street to the Great Coast Gate and Fat Margaret's Tower (15–20 minutes).

  2. 09:00 Walk Pikk Street up through the lower town to Town Hall Square before the tour groups arrive.

  3. 10:00 Climb St Olaf's tower (258 steps, €10, April to October) for the view over the Old Town and harbour.

  4. 11:00 Walk up to Toompea: the viewing platforms, Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and St Mary's Cathedral.

  5. 12:30 Lunch, for example elk soup and pies at III Draakon in the Town Hall, or Rataskaevu 16.

  6. 13:30 Kiek in de Kök and the bastion passages (€16 for the whole museum), or a tram to Kadriorg on a long call.

  7. 15:30 Last stroll and coffee near Viru Gate or the Great Coast Gate.

  8. 16:05 Leave the Old Town and walk back to the cruise terminal.

  9. 16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

For the Old Town, skip the ship tour: it starts a 15–20 minute walk from the terminal and is easy to do alone with a map. A guided walk is worth it mainly if you want the history explained. The ship tour earns its price for trips well outside the city, where you depend on its coach for the return.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Tallinn

Trying to buy a tram ticket from the driver.

Instead: Tap a contactless bank card on the validator (€2 for an hour, 2026), or buy a QR ticket at the cruise terminal machine before you go.

Taking a street taxi from the ferry terminals.

Instead: Walk, or book Bolt, which shows the price first. Unlicensed drivers near the harbour have charged several times the normal fare.

Following signs to the ferry terminals on the way back.

Instead: Head for the cruise-area gate to the left of Terminal A's vehicle gate, not into terminals A or D.

Planning St Olaf's tower on a winter call.

Instead: The tower and church close from November to March; use Toompea's free viewpoints instead.

Entering a bar or club on the strength of a tout's free-entry offer.

Instead: Check a printed menu with prices before ordering, and leave if none is shown.

Safety: is Tallinn safe for cruise passengers?

Tallinn is a safe city for visitors. The common problems are pickpocketing in the crowded Old Town, on the Toompea platforms, in Short Leg Lane on summer afternoons and at the ferry terminals, and overpriced unlicensed taxis around the harbour. Keep bags closed and in front of you, keep phones off café tables, and use Bolt or a contracted taxi. Cobbles are slippery when wet.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Unlicensed harbour taxis: drivers near the ferry terminals have posed as reputable firms and charged several times the normal fare for the short ride to the centre. Use Bolt or a contracted taxi and check the tariff displayed inside.
  • Bar and club bill scams: touts near Viru Street offer free entry, then drinks are charged at inflated prices and bills can run into hundreds of euros. Check the menu before ordering.
  • Friendship bracelets near Town Hall Square: an item is tied on during a chat, then €10–20 is demanded. Decline and walk on.
  • Card and shell games near Viru Gate: illegal and rigged. Ignore them.

Practical information

Crowds

The lower town around Town Hall Square and Viru Street fills with tour groups from mid-morning. Walk straight to Pikk Street and the square early, go up Toompea before noon, and keep museums for the early afternoon. Check the Port of Tallinn cruise schedule for your date to see how many ships are in.

Accessibility

The route from the cruise terminal to the Great Coast Gate is flat and paved, and the rooftop promenade is open to all. Inside the Old Town the cobbles are uneven, and Toompea is reached by steep lanes; the hop-on hop-off bus or a taxi is the easier way up. St Olaf's tower (258 spiral steps) and the bastion passages (steep, uneven stairs) are not suitable for anyone with limited mobility. Taxis cannot reach some Old Town streets.

If it rains

Spend the day indoors: Kiek in de Kök and the bastion passages, the cathedrals on Toompea, long lunches in the Old Town, or a trip out to the Kumu Art Museum. Skip St Olaf's tower in heavy rain, when the view and the stair are both poor.
