Las Palmas de Gran Canaria Cruise Port

Quick answerShips berth alongside at the Santa Catalina cruise terminal, so there is no tender. Parque Santa Catalina is about 10 minutes' walk and Las Canteras beach is just beyond it; for the old town of Vegueta take yellow city bus 1 (Puerto–Teatro, €1.40 paid to the driver, 2026) or a taxi. Be back at the terminal 60 minutes before all-aboard, and leave Vegueta 90 minutes before.

Transport: Las Palmas Cruise Terminal (Muelle Santa Catalina) to Vegueta and Triana

Las Palmas is a working city, not a resort, and the cruise terminal sits right on its doorstep. A new terminal building on Muelle Santa Catalina opened in October 2025 with three boarding bridges and room for four ships. From the gate you walk into Parque Santa Catalina, with Las Canteras beach on the far side of the isthmus. The historic quarter, Vegueta, is at the far southern end of the city centre, so the classic day is a bus or taxi ride south in the morning and the beach on the way back.

Walkable? Partly · about 10 min (0.4 km)

Parque Santa Catalina, the El Muelle shopping centre and Las Canteras beach are all walkable and flat. Vegueta and Triana are at the southern end of the city centre; use bus 1, the tourist bus or a taxi.

Where your ship docks

  • Las Palmas Cruise Terminal, Muelle Santa Catalina · 0.4 km to the centre — Opened 2 October 2025; operated by Global Ports Holding. 14,000 m² building, three boarding bridges, four berths. The operator gives the city centre (the Santa Catalina area) as 390 m away. A landscaped esplanade and palm grove lead from the terminal to the city. Taxi rank at the terminal; El Muelle shopping centre is next door.

City bus (Guaguas Municipales) line 1, Puerto–Teatro

€1.40 single trip, paid to the driver (2026)Allow up to 30 min to Triana/Vegueta

Yellow city buses. Line 1 stops at Parque Santa Catalina (listed in the Puerto-to-Teatro direction) and at Triana (Parque San Telmo), ending at Teatro on the edge of Vegueta. Departures every 10–20 minutes on weekdays and about every 15–17 minutes at weekends and on holidays, from 05:30. A single ticket is valid for one journey only.

Tourist bus (hop-on hop-off)

From €18 (2026)About 1.5 hours for the full loop; about 1 hour from the port to Vegueta

Stops at Muelle Santa Catalina outside the terminal. Runs 10:00–18:00 daily, every 20 minutes in summer and every 35 minutes in winter. Stops include Las Canteras, Pueblo Canario, Triana and Vegueta. It is slow to Vegueta; use it as a tour, not as a shuttle.

White taxis wait at the cruise terminal rank, and there is another rank at Parque San Telmo in Triana for the return.

Regional bus (Global, blue) line 30 to Maspalomas

Line 30 runs Las Palmas / Santa Catalina / San Telmo / Faro Maspalomas. Only for long calls; leave a wide margin for the return.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back at the terminal 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave Vegueta or Triana 90 minutes before all-aboard, and Maspalomas or other island trips at least 2.5 hours before.

From Las Canteras or Parque Santa Catalina the walk back is short, so the usual 60-minute buffer is enough. From Vegueta allow for waiting for bus 1 plus city traffic. Island trips depend on the motorway and on hourly-type regional buses.

If you're running late

Take a taxi from the rank at Parque San Telmo (Triana) or flag one down. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme immediately.

Las Palmas city is easy without a tour: the beach is a walk and Vegueta is one city bus away. A ship excursion makes sense for the interior (Roque Nublo, Tejeda, the Bandama caldera) or for Maspalomas and Puerto de Mogán, where mountain roads, motorway traffic and infrequent buses make an independent return riskier.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Trying to walk to Vegueta from the ship.

Instead: Vegueta is at the other end of the city centre. Take bus 1 from Parque Santa Catalina or a taxi, and save your legs for the old town.

Planning the cathedral on a Sunday.

Instead: Visiting hours are listed only for Monday–Saturday. On a Sunday call, do Casa de Colón (open 10:00–15:00) and the Vegueta craft market instead.

Arriving at Mercado de Vegueta after lunch.

Instead: It closes at 14:00 (14:30 on Fridays and Saturdays). Go first thing.

Using the tourist bus as transport back to the ship from Vegueta.

Instead: The loop takes about an hour from the port to Vegueta and runs every 20–35 minutes. For the return use bus 1 or a taxi from Parque San Telmo.

Leaving belongings on the sand at Las Canteras.

Instead: Swim in turns or bring only what you need.

Safety: is Las Palmas de Gran Canaria safe for cruise passengers?

Las Palmas is a large city that is generally safe for visitors. Use normal city precautions with phones and bags in busy areas such as Parque Santa Catalina and on buses, and do not leave belongings unattended on the beach. Cross the port roads at marked crossings. In summer, carry water and sun protection for the walk along Las Canteras.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Theft from unattended beach bags at Las Canteras: keep valuables with you or swim in turns.

Emergency number: 112

Practical information

Crowds

The season peaks from October to April and the terminal can take four ships at once. Parque Santa Catalina is busiest just after ships arrive, and the tourist bus fills at the port stop. Head to Vegueta early on bus 1, see the cathedral at opening, and keep the beach for the afternoon when groups have moved on.

Accessibility

The new terminal was built with universal accessibility, and the route to Parque Santa Catalina and along the Las Canteras promenade is flat; Las Canteras has a dedicated wheelchair area. Vegueta has cobbled streets that are hard going for wheelchairs and scooters. Check bus accessibility with the operator before relying on it; a taxi to Vegueta is the simpler option.

If it rains

Spend the day indoors in Vegueta: the cathedral and its sacred art museum, Casa de Colón, the Museo Canario and the CAAM modern art centre are all close together. The El Muelle shopping centre next to the terminal and the Museo Elder at Parque Santa Catalina are options near the ship.
