Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerAmalfi has no cruise berth for ocean-going ships: they anchor offshore and tender passengers to the harbour on the town's waterfront. Piazza Duomo is about 300 m away, a five-minute walk, so you need no transport for the town itself. Be back at the tender landing 90 minutes before all-aboard, and earlier if you go to Ravello or Positano.

Open my full Amalfi day, timed to 17:30 Get this for every port on your cruise, with alerts on the day Write about Amalfi? Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeAmalfi is a small town wedged into a ravine, with its harbour, bus stops and ferry piers all on one short stretch of waterfront. That makes it easy to land and explore on foot, and easy to reach Ravello by bus or Positano by ferry. The difficulties are the narrow coast road, which jams in season and slows buses and taxis, and the sea, which can delay tenders and cancel ferries. Plan the day around the tender queue and keep a margin for the return.
Walkable? Yes · about 5 min (0.3 km)
Flat walk from the harbour to Piazza Duomo. The town climbs steeply away from the main street, and the cathedral itself is up 62 steps from the square.
Where your ship docks
On foot
FreeAbout 5 min to Piazza Duomo
Walk from the harbour across the seafront into Piazza Duomo. Atrani, the next village east, is about 5 minutes away on foot along a narrow path or through a tunnel.
SITA SUD bus to Ravello
Buy before boarding at a tabaccheria, newsstand or bar; tickets are not sold on boardAbout 25–35 min
Buses to Ravello stop on the eastern side of Piazza Flavio Gioia, on the seafront. Roughly hourly. Buses fill quickly in summer; queue early for the return.
SITA SUD bus to Positano
Buy before boarding at a tabaccheria, newsstand or bar; tickets are not sold on boardAbout 50 min
Coastal buses stop on the western side of the statue in Piazza Flavio Gioia. The road is narrow and congested from May to October, and full buses can pass stops. Use the ferry instead when the sea allows.
Ferry or hydrofoil to Positano
From €10 one way (2026)About 20 min
Several operators (including Travelmar, Alicost, NLG, Lucibello and Alilauro) sail from Amalfi's harbour, generally from early April to the end of October. Timetables change week to week and rough seas cancel sailings.
Taxi
Agree the fare before you set offDepends on traffic on the coast road
Taxis are useful for Ravello or viewpoints but are expensive. Taxis are exempt from the coast road's alternate-plate car restrictions, but they still sit in the same traffic.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be at the tender landing 90 minutes before all-aboard (16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard). Leave Ravello on a bus by 15:00, and take a Positano ferry that departs by 15:00.
Tender queues build in the last two hours as everyone returns together. Buses from Ravello run about hourly and fill in summer, so missing one can cost an hour. Ferries from Positano can be cancelled by the sea; the bus fallback takes about 50 minutes on a congested road, so leave Positano by 14:40 if you must use it.
If you're running late
From Ravello or Positano, take a taxi straight to the Amalfi waterfront. If you will miss the last tender, call the port agent number on your daily programme immediately.
Amalfi has no purpose-built cruise terminal. Large ships anchor offshore and tender passengers ashore; only small vessels (up to about 35 m) can berth at the Coppola marina inside the harbour. Tenders land on the central waterfront near the ferry piers, at the foot of the town. Wind or a swell can delay or suspend tendering, so check the last tender time before leaving the landing area.

Skip the ship's tour for Amalfi town, Atrani and the cathedral: all are within a few minutes' walk of the tender landing. Ravello is easy alone by bus on a long call. A ship's tour earns its price for a full Amalfi Coast drive or for Positano on a day with a swell, when ferries may be cancelled and the bus is slow and crowded; the ship then carries the risk of getting you back.
Going to Positano by bus and trusting it to get back on time.
Instead: Use the ferry (about 20 minutes) when the sea is calm, and leave a large margin. The bus takes about 50 minutes and is often full in season.
Trying to buy a bus ticket from the driver.
Instead: Buy tickets before boarding at a tabaccheria, newsstand or bar. They are not sold on board.
Leaving Ravello on the last convenient bus.
Instead: Buses run about hourly and fill up. Leave Ravello by 15:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard.
Arriving at the cathedral in beachwear.
Instead: Cover shoulders and knees before climbing the steps.
Returning to the tender landing 30 minutes before all-aboard.
Instead: Aim for 90 minutes before. Tender queues are longest late in the afternoon and the sea can slow the transfer.
Amalfi is safe for visitors. The real hazards are road traffic on the narrow seafront and coast road, steep steps in the heat, and pickpocketing in crowded squares and on full buses. Keep valuables zipped away when queuing for buses and ferries. Carry your ship card and photo ID ashore.
Scams and tourist traps
Emergency number: 112
Crowds
Piazza Duomo and the cathedral steps fill from mid-morning as coaches and ferries arrive. Go to the cathedral before 10:00 or after 16:00, and head to Ravello early, when the buses are emptiest. Atrani and the Valle dei Mulini are calmer at midday.
Accessibility
Tender transfers depend on the swell; wheelchair users should ask the ship in advance whether they can be taken ashore. From the landing, the seafront and the main street to Piazza Duomo are reasonably level, but the cathedral is up 62 steps and much of the town is stepped and steep. Buses on the coast road are crowded and not reliably accessible; a pre-booked accessible car is the realistic option for Ravello.
If it rains
Rain makes the steps slippery and ferries may stop if the sea is rough. Use the day for the cathedral complex, the Paper Museum and the Arsenals, with long café stops near Piazza Duomo. Ravello's gardens lose their view in low cloud.
