Liverpool Cruise Port

Quick answerShips berth at the floating Liverpool Cruise Terminal on Princes Parade, next to the Royal Liver Building, so you walk straight into the city: about 5 minutes to the Pier Head and 15 to the Royal Albert Dock and Liverpool ONE. You do not need a shuttle. Be back at the terminal 60 minutes before all-aboard, and allow extra time at low tide, when the walkway to the ship is steep.

Transport: Liverpool Cruise Terminal (Princes Parade) to Liverpool city centre

Liverpool's cruise berth sits on the Mersey at the north end of the Pier Head, under the Three Graces, and the city starts about 50 metres from the terminal door. Everything most passengers want is on foot along a level waterfront: the Pier Head, the Royal Albert Dock, the Beatles Story and the Cavern Club. The terminal itself is still the small modular building opened in 2007 as a temporary facility. Plans for a new terminal have been changed several times; in 2026 the existing berth and building are in use, and the planned upgrade has no published completion date.

Walkable? Yes · about 15 min

Flat, level waterfront walking. About 5 minutes to the Pier Head and the Mersey Ferries terminal, 10 minutes to Moorfields or James Street stations, 15 minutes to the Royal Albert Dock and Liverpool ONE, and 20 minutes to Lime Street station.

Where your ship docks

  • Liverpool Cruise Terminal, Gate 2, Princes Parade, L3 1DL · 0.05 km to the centre — A floating berth on the River Mersey beside Princes Dock, about 350 m long, with a single-storey modular terminal next to the Royal Liver Building. It takes one large ship at a time; on two-ship days your line's port notes say where you dock. The linkspan walkway rises and falls with the tide and can be very steep at low tide; a mobility bus runs between the terminal and the gangway. A taxi rank operates outside on ship days.

Leaves from the Pier Head (Liverpool Gerry Marsden terminal), about 5 minutes' walk from the ship. Weekday sailings hourly on the hour from 10:00 to 16:00; weekends from 10:00 to 16:00 until 1 November 2026, then to 15:00 in winter. Services can be suspended, so check on the day.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back at the terminal 60 minutes before all-aboard (16:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard). Leave the Royal Albert Dock or Liverpool ONE 75 minutes before all-aboard, and Liverpool Cathedral 90 minutes before.

The walk is short, but the linkspan to the ship can be steep at low tide and slow to climb, and security queues build when everyone returns together. If you take the Mersey ferry cruise, choose a sailing that is back at the Pier Head at least 75 minutes before all-aboard.

If you're running late

Take a taxi from the Liverpool ONE area or Lime Street to Princes Parade (Gate 2). Call the port agent number on your daily programme if you think you will be late.

Skip the ship tour for the city: the waterfront, the Beatles Story, the Cavern Club and the museums are all a short, flat walk from the ship. A tour earns its price if you want to see the Beatles' childhood homes and suburbs, such as Penny Lane and Strawberry Field, which are spread out and not near the terminal, or for trips beyond Liverpool such as Chester or North Wales.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Liverpool

Paying for a ship shuttle into the city.

Instead: The Pier Head is 5 minutes' walk and the Royal Albert Dock 15. Walk.

Planning a visit to the Merseyside Maritime Museum.

Instead: It is closed for redevelopment until 2028, as is the International Slavery Museum. Visit the free Museum of Liverpool instead (Wednesday to Sunday).

Bringing only cash to the Cavern Club or the Beatles Story.

Instead: The Cavern Club is cashless and the Beatles Story does not take cash on arrival. Use a card.

Arriving at the terminal at the last minute at low tide.

Instead: The walkway to the ship can be very steep at low tide. Be back 60 minutes before all-aboard, and ask for the mobility bus if you need it.

Trying to fit the Beatles' childhood homes and suburbs into a short call on foot.

Instead: They are spread across the suburbs. Book a tour or taxi with a clear return time, or keep to the city-centre Beatles sights.

Safety: is Liverpool safe for cruise passengers?

Liverpool city centre is safe for visitors with normal city care. Keep bags closed and phones secure in busy areas such as Liverpool ONE, Mathew Street and the Pier Head, especially on match days and weekend afternoons. Traffic drives on the left; look right when crossing the Strand, the busy road between the waterfront and the centre.

Emergency number: 999 or 112

Practical information

Crowds

Liverpool expected 135 cruise calls and about 350,000 passengers and crew in 2026. The terminal takes one large ship at a time, so crowds come from the city itself rather than other ships: weekends, school holidays and football match days are busiest. Do the Beatles Story at opening and the Cavern Club in the early afternoon, before the evening music crowd.

Accessibility

The terminal is step-free from the street, and the waterfront promenade is wide and level. The linkspan to the ship changes slope with the tide and can be very steep at low tide; a mobility bus runs between the terminal and the gangway, and powered-chair users should tell their cruise line in advance. The Liverpool Cathedral accessibility lift can be out of use on some dates. Mathew Street and the Cavern Club involve stairs down into the cellar club.

If it rains

Go indoors along the waterfront: the Beatles Story, the free Museum of Liverpool, and the shops and cafés of the Royal Albert Dock and Liverpool ONE. The Cavern Club is a cellar and works in any weather. Skip the ferry cruise in heavy rain or strong wind.
