Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerKlaipėda is a docking port: cruise ships berth by the Old Town, about 800 m from the centre, and you can walk in about 10 minutes. The Smiltynė passenger ferry to the Curonian Spit leaves from the Old Ferry terminal at the edge of the Old Town and crosses in about 5 minutes. Be back at the ship 60 minutes before all-aboard, or 90 minutes if you go to Nida by bus.

Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeKlaipėda is Lithuania's only seaport, and the cruise berth sits at the edge of the compact Old Town, so the town itself takes no planning. The real decision is how much of the Curonian Spit to see. Smiltynė, with the Lithuanian Sea Museum and pine-backed beaches, is a short ferry hop away. Nida and the big dunes are about an hour further south by bus, which makes them a long-call or ship-tour option. A new cruise terminal is being built in the city centre and is due for completion in 2027, so expect construction work around the waterfront in 2026.
Walkable? Yes · about 10 min (0.8 km)
A flat walk of about 8–10 minutes to the centre. The Old Town, Theatre Square, the castle site and the Old Ferry terminal for Smiltynė are all close together on foot. Expect detours around construction work on the waterfront while the new terminal is built.

Passenger ferry to Smiltynė (Old Ferry terminal)
Fare not confirmed; pay by cash or card, or use the Smiltynės perkėla appAbout 5 min crossing
The Old Ferry terminal is at Danės g. 1, at the northern edge of the Old Town, and is for foot passengers only. Ferries run about every 30 minutes, more often in peak summer. The operator is Smiltynės perkėla; its app shows the live timetable and fares. In strong wind or snow the Old Ferry may stop, and foot passengers are sent to the New Ferry terminal instead.
Bus from Smiltynė to Nida
Fare not confirmed; tickets on the bus (cash or card) or at autobusubilietai.ltAbout 65 min each way
Buses run the length of the Curonian Spit from the Smiltynė ferry landing to Nida bus station, stopping at Juodkrantė and other villages. Many hourly ferries are timed to connect with the bus. Departures are limited, so fix your return bus before you leave Klaipėda.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Be back at the ship 60 minutes before all-aboard from the Old Town or Smiltynė; 90 minutes before if you go to Nida by bus.
From the Old Town the walk back is about 10 minutes. From Smiltynė, allow for a ferry that leaves only every 30 minutes, then the walk from the Old Ferry terminal to the berth. From Nida, the bus takes about 65 minutes to Smiltynė before the ferry, and buses are not frequent, so catch one that has you back in Smiltynė at least two hours before all-aboard.
If you're running late
If the Old Ferry is not running because of weather, the New Ferry terminal is the alternative crossing; ask staff at the landing. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Skip the ship tour for Klaipėda itself: the Old Town is a short walk from the berth and easy to see alone. Smiltynė is also simple on your own, because the ferry is short and frequent. Nida is where a ship tour earns its price. The bus is about an hour each way with limited departures, and missing one can cost you the ship. On a call of eight hours or less, take the ship's Curonian Spit tour or stay closer to town.
Planning a city museum day on a Monday or Tuesday in summer.
Instead: The Castle Museum and the History Museum of Lithuania Minor close on Mondays and Tuesdays from mid-June to mid-September. Use those days for Smiltynė.
Treating Nida as a quick hop.
Instead: It is a ferry plus about 65 minutes by bus each way, with limited departures. Do it only on a long call, or take the ship's tour.
Going to the wrong ferry terminal.
Instead: Foot passengers use the Old Ferry terminal at Danės g. 1, by the Old Town. The New Ferry terminal is the fallback only when the Old Ferry is stopped by weather.
Assuming the Sea Museum is next to the Smiltynė ferry landing.
Instead: It is at the tip of the spit in the old fort. Allow walking time each way and check that it is open on your date.
Catching the last possible ferry back from Smiltynė.
Instead: Ferries run about every 30 minutes. Aim for one that lands you in Klaipėda at least 90 minutes before all-aboard.
Klaipėda is a calm, low-risk port for visitors. Take normal care with bags in busy areas and on the ferry. While the new cruise terminal is being built, follow marked walkways around the construction site on the waterfront. On the Curonian Spit, stay on marked paths across the dunes; they are protected and the sand is fragile. Baltic water is cold, so swim only where others do and not near the harbour channel.

Crowds
Klaipėda sees a few ships a week at most; in 2026 about 64 calls were scheduled, and the busiest day had three ships at once. Even then the Old Town rarely feels crowded. The pinch points are ship-tour coaches leaving for Nida and the Sea Museum's dolphin shows. Go to Smiltynė in the morning while tour groups head south to Nida, and see the Old Town later in the day.
Accessibility
The walk from the berth into the Old Town is short and flat, but Old Town streets are partly cobbled. Construction work on the waterfront in 2026 may create temporary detours. The Smiltynė ferry is a short level crossing; ask staff about wheelchair boarding. Beaches on the spit are reached over sand and through forest paths, which are hard going for wheelchairs. Check access with each museum before you visit.
If it rains
Stay in town and use the museums: the Castle Museum, the History Museum of Lithuania Minor and the Clock and Watch Museum are all within walking distance. The Sea Museum's aquarium and dolphin shows are indoors and work in rain, but the walk from the Smiltynė ferry is exposed. In strong wind the Old Ferry can stop.

Your whole cruise, planned like this
The day plan above assumes a 17:30 all-aboard. Your ship's times will differ, and so will every other stop. Pro builds the plan from your ship's real times: a timed day in Klaipėda and every other port, a leave-by time for each stop, and a Plan B if you run late. Ultimate adds a live leave-by countdown from where you are on the day. Every plan uses the same checked facts as this guide. Nothing is made up.
