Montego Bay Cruise Port

Quick answerShips dock at the Freeport cruise terminal, about 5 km west of downtown Montego Bay; there is no tender. The road out runs through an industrial freight zone, so take a licensed taxi, about 10 minutes to the Hip Strip and Doctor's Cave Beach. Transport: Montego Bay Cruise Terminal (Freeport) to the Hip Strip (Gloucester Avenue / Jimmy Cliff Boulevard)

Montego Bay is Jamaica's main resort city, and its cruise terminal sits in the Freeport zone across the bay from the beaches and the Hip Strip. The port is functional rather than pleasant: there is nothing to walk to, so the day starts with a taxi. Hurricane Melissa struck western Jamaica on 28 October 2025 and the first cruise ship returned on 24 November 2025. Doctor's Cave Bathing Club, Harmony Beach Park, Martha Brae rafting and several Hip Strip restaurants were operating again by December 2025, though some Hip Strip businesses and hotels took longer to reopen.

Walkable? No (5 km)

The walk to town is long, hot and unshaded, and the access road carries container lorries. Take a licensed taxi to the Hip Strip, which is walkable once you are there.

Where your ship docks

  • Montego Bay Cruise Terminal (Freeport) · 5 km to the centre — Pier in the Freeport zone with room for up to four ships. About 5 km west of downtown and about 10 minutes by taxi from Doctor's Cave Beach. Licensed taxis and tour desks with posted zone rates operate at the terminal.

Licensed taxi (JUTA or JTB-approved)

Fixed zone rates posted at the terminal; confirm before you get in (2026)About 10 min to the Hip Strip and Doctor's Cave Beach

Use the official dispatch at the terminal. Licensed taxis carry red and white plates; JTB-approved drivers carry photo ID and a blue JTB windscreen sticker. Confirm whether the fare is per person or per car and in which currency, and fix a pick-up time for the return.

Ship or independent tour

Varies by line; check your cruise plannerHalf or full day

The sensible choice for Martha Brae rafting, Dunn's River Falls (1.5–2 hours each way) or anything out of town, because the ship waits for its own tours.

Public buses and route taxis

Not recommended

The US government advises visitors to avoid public buses in Jamaica because of crime and overcrowding. Use licensed taxis.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. Leave the Hip Strip or Doctor's Cave Beach 90 minutes before all-aboard, and Rose Hall 120 minutes before.

The taxi ride is short, but you may wait for a cab at the Hip Strip on a busy afternoon, and traffic on the main road and the Freeport access road can slow you down. Book your return pick-up time with the driver who takes you out.

If you're running late

Ask the front desk of any Hip Strip hotel, or Doctor's Cave Bathing Club, to call a licensed taxi. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme immediately.

A one-day plan for Montego Bay (all aboard 16:30)

Assumes the ship docks at 08:00 and all-aboard is 16:30 (ships typically call about 08:00–17:00).

  1. 08:30 Leave the terminal by licensed taxi. Agree the fare and a 15:00 pick-up time on the Hip Strip.

  2. 09:00 Arrive at Doctor's Cave Bathing Club (open from 08:30) while it is still quiet; pay US$8 and claim a spot.

  3. 11:30 Walk along the Hip Strip, browsing shops and the Reggae and Dancehall Wall of Fame.

  4. 12:30 Lunch at the Pelican Grill on the Hip Strip.

  5. 13:30 Swim again or have a drink at Margaritaville on the Hip Strip.

  6. 15:00 Meet your taxi on the Hip Strip, 90 minutes before all-aboard.

  7. 15:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

A beach day at Doctor's Cave and a stroll on the Hip Strip are easy to do on your own with a licensed taxi. Rose Hall is also manageable independently if you agree a return fare. Take the ship's tour for Martha Brae rafting, Dunn's River Falls in Ocho Rios, or any trip more than half an hour away: the drives are long and the ship will not wait for a private driver.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Montego Bay

Trying to walk from the ship to town.

Instead: It is about 5 km on a road with container lorries and no shade. Take a licensed taxi.

Getting into a taxi without agreeing the fare.

Instead: Use the official dispatch, check the posted zone rate, and confirm per person or per car and the currency.

Booking a private trip to Dunn's River Falls from Montego Bay.

Instead: It is 1.5–2 hours each way. If you must go, take the ship's tour.

Not arranging the return pick-up.

Instead: Fix a time with your driver, or know where to find a licensed taxi on the Hip Strip.

Planning a Sunday visit to Rose Hall.

Instead: Day tours run Monday to Saturday only.

Safety: is Montego Bay safe for cruise passengers?

Jamaica has high violent-crime rates; tourist areas such as the Hip Strip are generally safer, but the US advisory notes that armed robberies occur in Montego Bay and rates Jamaica Level 2 (exercise increased caution, June 2026). The US advises reconsidering travel to several Montego Bay-area neighbourhoods, including Flankers, Rose Heights, Mount Salem, Norwood, Salt Spring and the Hart Street area, and the UK advises caution in Flankers, Barrett Town, Glendevon, Rose Heights and Mount Salem. Use licensed taxis, avoid public buses and walking after dark, keep valuables on the ship and use ATMs only in daylight in busy places.

Scams and tourist traps

  • Overcharging or unlicensed taxis: use the terminal dispatch and licensed cars with red and white plates, and agree the fare first.
  • Fares that change at the destination: confirm whether the quote is per person or per car and in US or Jamaican dollars before you set off.

Emergency number: 119 (police); 110 (fire and ambulance)

Practical information

Crowds

Up to four ships can dock at once. Doctor's Cave fills from late morning on busy days; arrive early or try Harmony Beach Park instead. Taxis back to the ship are in most demand in the last hour, so agree a pick-up time early.

Accessibility

The terminal itself is level, but there is nothing within walking distance, so wheelchair users need an accessible taxi or a ship tour with an adapted vehicle. The Hip Strip pavements are uneven and narrow in places. Doctor's Cave has facilities close to the entrance, but the beach is sand. Rose Hall Great House involves steps and multiple floors.

If it rains

Rain spoils the beach day. Rose Hall Great House is the best indoor alternative (Monday to Saturday). Otherwise, stay near the Hip Strip in a restaurant such as the Pelican Grill and keep the taxi trip short.
