Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerMost ships dock at Heritage Quay, Redcliffe Quay or the Nevis Street Pier, right in central St John's, so you walk straight into town. If your ship is at the Deep Water Harbour, take a taxi (10-20 minutes) rather than walking. For Nelson's Dockyard, bus 17 takes at least 45 minutes each way; leave English Harbour 2 hours 45 minutes before all-aboard by bus.

Open my full St John's day, timed to 17:30 Get this for every port on your cruise, with alerts on the day Write about St John's? Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeSt John's is the capital and the cruise piers run right into its shopping streets, so on most calls you step off the ship into Heritage Quay. The town itself is a short visit: the cathedral, the museum in the old Court House and the public market. Most passengers head out for one of two things: Nelson's Dockyard and Shirley Heights on the south coast, or a beach such as Dickenson Bay or Jolly Beach. Taxis are unmetered and priced by zone, so agree the fare first. The one berth to watch for is the Deep Water Harbour, an industrial pier with no facilities where you need a taxi.
Walkable? Yes · about 10 min
From Heritage and Redcliffe Quays you are already in town; the banks at High and Market Streets are about five minutes' walk. Not walkable from the Deep Water Harbour. Traffic drives on the left, so look right first when crossing.

Ranks are a short walk up the Heritage Quay pedestrian street and on Thames Street. Cruise taxi rates went up 10% for the 2023-24 season, the first rise since 2005-06. Sharing a van brings the cost per person down.
Bus 17 to English Harbour (Nelson's Dockyard)
Cash fare; carry small EC$ notesAt least 45 min each way; about every 30 min
Minibuses stop wherever they are flagged, which makes the trip slow. St John's has two bus stations; ask for the English Harbour bus. Check when the last convenient bus back leaves before you go.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
From St John's, start back 75 minutes before all-aboard (90 if your ship is at the Deep Water Harbour). From Dickenson Bay leave 90 minutes before, from Jolly Beach 2 hours before, and from English Harbour 2 hours by taxi or 2 hours 45 minutes by bus.
Bus 17 takes at least 45 minutes and runs about every 30 minutes, so a missed bus costs half an hour. Downtown St John's backs up in rain and in the evening rush.

Skip the ship tour for St John's: the town starts at the pier. Dickenson Bay is a short taxi ride and easy alone. Nelson's Dockyard is the borderline case: the bus is cheap but slow and the return is on you. On a short call, or if you also want Shirley Heights, a ship tour or a taxi booked for the whole trip is the safer choice.
Walking into town from the Deep Water Harbour.
Instead: The road has no pavement. Take a taxi and allow extra time for the return.
Getting in a taxi without agreeing the fare and currency.
Instead: Taxis are unmetered and priced by zone. Agree the total, and whether it is EC$ or US$, before setting off.
Catching the last possible bus back from English Harbour.
Instead: Bus 17 takes at least 45 minutes and runs about every 30 minutes. Leave 2 hours 45 minutes before all-aboard.
Planning on the Shirley Heights Sunday party.
Instead: It runs 16:00-22:00, after most ships sail. Visit the lookout in daylight instead.
Using the waterfront ATMs.
Instead: The kiosks by the waterfront dispense only US dollars and charge fees. Banks at High and Market Streets are five minutes' walk.
Antigua is visited without trouble by most cruise passengers, but the UK government notes violent crime including armed robbery and sexual assault. Stay on main streets, avoid isolated areas including empty beaches, carry little cash and jewellery, and use only licensed taxis. Sea currents can be strong and not every beach has lifeguards or warning flags. Traffic drives on the left and roads have potholes, unmarked speed bumps and pedestrians on the carriageway. Drug possession carries severe penalties.

Crowds
St John's has five cruise berths, so several large ships can be in at once. On those days the Heritage Quay pedestrian street and taxi ranks are busiest when the ships first open their gangways. Head for the Dockyard or a beach early, and do the town and the market in the late afternoon when tours are returning.
Accessibility
Heritage Quay and Redcliffe Quay are level with the town centre, but streets have kerbs and uneven pavements, and the cathedral is uphill. The Deep Water Harbour has no facilities and no pavement, so a taxi is essential. Minibuses are not adapted. Holland America states its Scenic Antigua tour to Nelson's Dockyard and Shirley Heights cannot take wheelchairs, walkers or scooters. Shirley Heights is reached by road or a steep trail.
If it rains
Use the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda, the cathedral and the covered shops at Heritage and Redcliffe Quays. Nelson's Dockyard has a museum, shops and restaurants for a wet day, but allow longer: downtown traffic backs up when it rains.

Your whole cruise, planned like this
The day plan above assumes a 17:30 all-aboard. Your ship's times will differ, and so will every other stop. Pro builds the plan from your ship's real times: a timed day in St John's and every other port, a leave-by time for each stop, and a Plan B if you run late. Ultimate adds a live leave-by countdown from where you are on the day. Every plan uses the same checked facts as this guide. Nothing is made up.
