Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerCruise ships dock in the main commercial port of Heraklion, next to the Venetian harbour; there is no tendering. The Venetian harbour is a 15–20 minute walk and the centre about 1.5 km. For Knossos, take city bus line 2 (about 20–25 minutes, €1.80 bought before boarding in 2026) and leave Knossos at least two hours before all-aboard.

Status and sourcesHeraklion is Crete's main port and a working city rather than a resort. Ships tie up in the commercial harbour beside the Venetian harbour and Koules fortress, and the old town is a walk away along the waterfront. Most passengers come for Knossos, the great Minoan palace site 5 km south, and the Archaeological Museum that holds its finds. Knossos has almost no shade, so in summer the day works best if you go there first and spend the hot middle hours in the museum and the old town.
Walkable? Yes · about 20 min (1.5 km)
Walk along the waterfront to the Venetian harbour in 15–20 minutes, then up into the old town. The harbour walk is exposed to sun and wind. Knossos is not walkable; take the bus or a taxi.

From the old town, start back 80 minutes before all-aboard. From Knossos, leave at least two hours before all-aboard.
The bus from Knossos takes 20–25 minutes, then you still walk or ride from the centre to the berth. Buses run often but fill up on multi-ship days, so you may not get on the first one.
If you're running late
If the bus is full, take a taxi from Knossos; the ride to the port is about 10–15 minutes. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your ship's daily programme.

Knossos is easy to do alone: a frequent city bus, a short ride and a timed-entry ticket you can book online. What the ship's tour adds is a guide, and Knossos is hard to read without one; an audio guide or a licensed guide at the gate is the middle option. A ship's tour makes more sense for anything further afield, such as southern Crete, where one road and long distances make an independent return risky.
Going to Knossos at midday in summer.
Instead: Be there for 08:00 or soon after. The site has almost no shade and crowds build from mid-morning.
Turning up at Knossos without a timed ticket.
Instead: Book a slot online in advance; the ticket is valid from an hour before to an hour after your slot.
Buying the bus ticket on board.
Instead: It costs €1 more. Buy at the bus station kiosk or in the official app.
Planning the museum first thing on a Wednesday.
Instead: It opens at 13:00 on Wednesdays. Do Knossos in the morning instead.
Leaving Knossos with only an hour to spare.
Instead: Leave two hours before all-aboard; buses fill on busy days and you still have the walk to the berth.
Heraklion is generally safe. Watch your belongings in crowds in the old town and at bus stops. The real risk is heat: Knossos and the harbour walk are exposed, so carry water and sun protection and wear closed shoes with grip on the uneven stones at Knossos.
Emergency number: 112
Crowds
Knossos is busiest from about 10:30, when coach tours arrive, and buses on line 2 fill when several ships are in. Go to Knossos first thing and leave the museum, which has more room, for the middle of the day. On Wednesdays the museum opens at 13:00, so expect a queue then.
Accessibility
The walk from the port to the Venetian harbour is level but long, about 1.5 km to the centre, and the old town climbs gently from the harbour. At Knossos, wheelchair access runs from the entrance to the Central Court; beyond that the ground is uneven. A taxi to Knossos avoids the bus steps. Ask your ship about accessible transport if you need it.
If it rains
Spend longer in the Archaeological Museum, then visit Agios Minas Cathedral and Agios Titos and eat in the old town. Knossos is open-air and slippery when wet, so make it short or skip it.

Your whole cruise, planned like this
The day plan above assumes a 17:30 all-aboard. Your ship's times will differ, and so will every other stop. Pro builds the plan from your ship's real times: a timed day in Heraklion and every other port, a leave-by time for each stop, and a Plan B if you run late. Ultimate adds a live leave-by countdown from where you are on the day. Every plan uses the same checked facts as this guide. Nothing is made up.
