Toulon Cruise Port

Quick answerToulon has two cruise terminals: a downtown one in the city centre for smaller ships, and La Seyne-sur-Mer across the bay for the largest. From La Seyne, take the ship's shuttle boat (about 10 minutes) or walk about 10 minutes to the Espace Marine stop for the public 8M waterbus (about 15–20 minutes, €1.40 bus fare, 2026). If docked at La Seyne, be at the Toulon boat stop two hours before all-aboard.

Transport: Port of Toulon (Toulon downtown and La Seyne-sur-Mer cruise terminals) to Toulon city centre

Toulon is a naval city first and a resort second. The harbour is full of grey warships, the old town behind it is a grid of narrow streets around a morning market, and Mont Faron rises straight behind the city with a cable car to the top. What shapes your day is which terminal you get. Ships in the downtown terminal walk straight into the centre. Ships at La Seyne-sur-Mer are on the far side of the bay and depend on a boat, so the return has to be planned around boat times rather than a walk.

Walkable? Partly · about 15 min (1.2 km)

From the downtown terminal you walk into Toulon along the harbour. From La Seyne you can walk to La Seyne's own small centre in about 15 minutes, but Toulon itself is across the bay: you need a boat, bus or taxi.

Where your ship docks

  • Toulon downtown cruise and ferry terminal (Gare Maritime, opposite Stade Mayol) · 0 km to the centre — In the city centre at the end of the harbour, used by smaller ships (three quays, up to about 300 m ship length). Walk along the marina promenade into town. Toulon SNCF station is about 15 minutes on foot. A taxi rank with flat fares for cruise passengers is outside.
  • La Seyne-sur-Mer cruise terminal (Corniche Alphonse Giovannini) · 1.2 km to the centre — Across the bay from Toulon; takes the largest ships (up to 350 m). 1.2 km and about 15 minutes' walk to La Seyne town centre, not Toulon. Toulon is about 5 km across the water or about 7 km by road. Terminal has a cruise line desk and Wi-Fi.

Ship's shuttle boat (ship at La Seyne)

The port describes an exclusive shuttle boat from La Seyne to Toulon city centre for cruise passengers. Whether it is free or charged depends on the line.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Ship at La Seyne: be at the Toulon waterbus stop by 15:30 for a 17:30 all-aboard (two hours before). Ship at the downtown terminal: be back at the gangway by 16:30.

From Toulon the 8M runs only every 20–30 minutes, and the crossing plus the walk from Espace Marine to the terminal takes about 30 minutes. A missed boat costs you half an hour. On Sundays the last 8M boats stop earlier (last at 19:40) and run every 30 minutes all day.

If you're running late

If you miss the boat, take a taxi from the Toulon side round the bay to the La Seyne terminal (about 7 km by road). If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away.

Toulon itself, the market, the naval museum and Mont Faron are easy on your own, even from La Seyne, as long as you respect the boat times. A ship tour is worth it for longer trips such as Saint-Tropez, Aix-en-Provence or the Bandol and Cassis wine areas: these are long road journeys in summer traffic, and an independent delay there is hard to recover when the ship is across the bay at La Seyne.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Toulon

Assuming you are in Toulon when the ship is at La Seyne.

Instead: Check your berth. La Seyne is across the bay; you need the shuttle boat, the 8M waterbus or a taxi.

Turning up for the market in the afternoon or on a Monday.

Instead: Cours Lafayette is a morning market, Tuesday to Sunday. Go first thing.

Planning the Faron cable car without checking it is open.

Instead: It closes in high wind, on severe fire-risk days, on scheduled maintenance dates and from late November to early February.

Walking to the waterbus stop at the last minute.

Instead: Boats run every 20–30 minutes. Be at the Toulon stop two hours before all-aboard so one missed boat does not matter.

Visiting the naval museum on a Tuesday.

Instead: It is closed on Tuesdays except in July and August.

Safety: is Toulon safe for cruise passengers?

Toulon is a working port and naval city with normal big-city precautions. Keep valuables close in the market crowds and on busy boats. The Mistral wind can blow hard all year: it can make crossings choppy and close the Faron cable car. In summer carry water and sun protection on Mont Faron, where fire-risk closures also apply to the hills.

Emergency number: 112

Practical information

Crowds

Mornings at the Cours Lafayette market are busiest on Saturdays. The waterbuses are public commuter boats shared with locals; returning early keeps you clear of any late-afternoon queue. The 38M to Les Sablettes runs only hourly, so a full boat in high season means an hour's wait; go out on an early boat.

Accessibility

The downtown terminal is on the flat harbour front. From La Seyne, ask the ship about wheelchair access on the shuttle boat and check with Réseau Mistral before relying on the public waterbus. The Musée national de la Marine is fully accessible, with a lift on request. The Mont Faron cable car is listed as wheelchair accessible. At Mourillon, Plage de la Source has accessible toilets and free adapted bathing chairs from June to September.

If it rains

Spend longer in the Musée national de la Marine and in Les Halles de Toulon, the covered food hall on Place Vincent Raspail. Skip the cable car: low cloud hides the view and wind may close it.
