Cruise Port Guide
Quick answerShips dock at Amber Cove's own pier, so there is no tender, but nothing outside the port is walkable. Puerto Plata town is about 12 km away: a taxi costs about US$35 a car each way for up to five people and takes 15-20 minutes. Leave town 90 minutes before all-aboard. The Puerto Plata cable car (Teleférico) is closed for a full rebuild throughout 2026.

Open my full Puerto Plata day, timed to 17:30 Get this for every port on your cruise, with alerts on the day Write about Puerto Plata? Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeAmber Cove is a self-contained cruise centre built by Carnival Corporation in Maimón Bay, west of Puerto Plata on the Dominican Republic's north coast, and used by Carnival Corporation's brands. Inside the gate there is a free pool, bars, a zip line and shops, so some passengers never leave. Puerto Plata town has a 16th-century fort, a seafront malecón and a small, colourful centre around Parque Central, but you need a taxi or tour to reach it. The city's signature trip, the cable car up Pico Isabel de Torres, has been shut since 2024 and is being rebuilt, so plan around it.
Walkable? No (12 km)
The port complex is easy to walk around, but nothing outside the gate is within walking distance. Puerto Plata town is about 12 km away by road.

Runs from the ship to the port entrance. You can also walk; it is roughly half a mile.
Taxi to Puerto Plata town
About US$35 a car each way, up to five people (reported 2023)15-20 min
Taxis wait at the port transport hub. Agree the fare, the drop-off point and the pick-up time before you set off; a return trip is about US$70 a car. US and UK advice is to use organised taxis rather than hailing cars in the street.
Ship or local tour
Varies by line; check your cruise plannerHalf day
Tours cover Puerto Plata town, Ocean World, the Damajagua (27 Charcos) waterfalls, beaches and a cacao or coffee visit. The ship holds a tour's return if it runs late.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
Leave Puerto Plata town 90 minutes before all-aboard (16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard) and be on board 60 minutes before.
The taxi takes 15-20 minutes, but town traffic can slow it, and you then need time to get from the gate to the ship. Agree a fixed pick-up time and place with your driver in the morning. For beaches such as Playa Dorada (about 30 minutes' drive) leave 90 minutes before all-aboard as well.
If you're running late
If your driver does not appear, ask a hotel or restaurant to call a taxi; ride-hailing apps work in many areas of the country. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme straight away. Tourist police (POLITUR): 809-222-2026.

For Puerto Plata town, a shared taxi is simple and cheap for a group; a ship tour mainly saves you from arranging the return. Take a tour for the Damajagua waterfalls, which need a guide and safety gear, and for anything combining several stops. Do not book anything that relies on the Puerto Plata cable car: it is closed in 2026, so check that any 'Mount Isabel de Torres' tour goes up by road.
Expecting to walk into Puerto Plata.
Instead: The town is about 12 km away. Budget for a taxi or tour, or stay at the port.
Planning to ride the Puerto Plata cable car.
Instead: It has been closed since 2024 and is being rebuilt; the 18-month works only start after the contract award. Use a road tour if you want the summit.
Taking a taxi without agreeing the price and pick-up.
Instead: Agree the fare per car, the pick-up place and time before you get in.
Confusing Amber Cove with Taino Bay.
Instead: Taino Bay is the port in Puerto Plata town; Amber Cove is the separate Carnival-owned centre to the west. Directions and walking advice for Taino Bay do not apply.
Assuming your drinks package covers the port bars.
Instead: Food and drinks at Amber Cove are charged separately.
The US State Department rates the Dominican Republic at Level 2, exercise increased caution, because of crime, and the UK describes the crime rate as high, with bag-snatching, pickpocketing and robberies. In Puerto Plata keep valuables out of sight, stay in busy areas and use organised taxis rather than unregulated cars or motorbike taxis. Lifeguards may not be present on beaches, and the sea can be rough, especially in the June to November hurricane season. Inside Amber Cove the port is fenced and managed.
Scams and tourist traps
Emergency number: 911
Crowds
Amber Cove has two berths, so at most two ships share the port, but taxis at the rank are busiest in the first hour. Leave a little later or agree a taxi in advance through your ship. Taino Bay can add more passengers in town on the same day; see the fort early before groups arrive.
Accessibility
The port complex is compact, with free tuk-tuks from the ship to the entrance and golf carts run by local drivers. Streets inside the port are cobbled. Taxis are ordinary cars, so ask at the rank about a vehicle for a folding wheelchair. Step-free access in Puerto Plata town and at the fort was not verified. The Damajagua waterfalls are not suitable for anyone with walking difficulties.
If it rains
Showers are common, especially from November to May. Use the morning for the Amber Museum and the fort museum, then a long café stop near Parque Central. Inside the port, the bars and shops give some cover.

Your whole cruise, planned like this
The day plan above assumes a 17:30 all-aboard. Your ship's times will differ, and so will every other stop.
