Progreso Cruise Port

Quick answerShips berth at the Terminal Remota at the end of a pier about 6.5 km long, so you cannot walk ashore; a free shuttle bus takes about 15 minutes to Progreso town. From there the Malecón and beach are close, and Autoprogreso buses run to Mérida in 40–60 minutes for about MX$28–30 (2026). Be back at the shuttle stop in town 90 minutes before all-aboard, and leave Mérida 2 hours 30 minutes before.

Transport: Puerto Progreso – Terminal Remota (cruise pier) to Progreso town and Malecón

Progreso is Yucatán's port, a beach town about 35 km north of Mérida. Its pier runs some 6.5 km into the Gulf of Mexico because the water is so shallow, and cruise ships berth at the Terminal Remota at the far end. The day divides three ways: stay in Progreso for the beach and Malecón, go to Mérida for the colonial city centre, or take a tour to a Mayan site. Dzibilchaltún is close to the Mérida highway; Uxmal and Chichén Itzá are long trips that suit a ship's tour. Calls are short, with October 2026 departures at 16:00 or 17:00.

Walkable? No (6.5 km)

The pier is too long to walk; take the free shuttle bus to town. Once in town, the Malecón and the beach are a short walk from the shuttle stop.

Where your ship docks

  • Terminal Remota (end of the Progreso pier) · 6.5 km to the centre — Cruise terminal inaugurated in 1989 at the end of the pier, with a duty-free complex, toilets, a tourist desk and a pharmacy. Free shuttle buses leave from beyond the duty-free area for the roughly 15-minute ride to town. Walking the pier is not an option.

Free pier shuttle

FreeAbout 15 min each way

Runs along the pier between the terminal and Progreso town, every 10–20 minutes. In town it stops at the Autoprogreso bus station, and return shuttles leave from the same place. Taxis wait in town.

Autoprogreso bus to Mérida

About MX$28–30 one way (2026)40–60 min

Buses leave about every 15 minutes. In Mérida they use the Autoprogreso terminal on Calle 62 between Calles 65 and 67, in the Centro, a short walk from the main square. Allow for traffic on the way back.

Taxi or Uber between Progreso and Mérida

Taxi about MX$450–600, Uber about MX$350–450 one way (2026)30–40 min

Fares reported for Mérida centre to Progreso in July 2026; agree a taxi fare before you set off. Many taxi drivers in Progreso accept US dollars and give change in pesos.

The practical way to reach the major Mayan sites on a short call, because the ship waits for its own tours.

Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.

Return timing: getting back to the ship on time

Be at the shuttle stop in Progreso town 90 minutes before all-aboard. Leave Mérida 2 hours 30 minutes before all-aboard, and Dzibilchaltún 2 hours before.

Every return goes through the pier shuttle, so allow for the queue as well as the 15-minute ride. From Mérida the bus takes 40–60 minutes and traffic on the highway can add more. If you are on an independent tour, set the return time to reach the shuttle stop with this margin.

If you're running late

From Mérida, take a taxi or Uber straight to the Progreso shuttle stop instead of waiting for a bus. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent number on your daily programme at once.

A one-day plan for Progreso (all aboard 15:30)

Assumes the ship docks at 08:00 and all-aboard is 15:30. October 2026 departures are listed at 16:00 or 17:00, so check your own all-aboard time.

  2. 08:50 Arrive at the Autoprogreso station in town. Take a bus to Mérida.

  3. 09:50 Arrive at the Autoprogreso terminal on Calle 62 and walk to the main square.

  4. 10:00 Mérida's central plaza, the cathedral and the colonial streets around them.

  5. 11:45 Lunch in the Centro.

  6. 13:00 Bus back to Progreso, 2 hours 30 minutes before all-aboard.

  7. 14:00 Arrive at the Progreso shuttle stop, 90 minutes before all-aboard. Take the shuttle to the ship.

  8. 14:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

Progreso's beach and Malecón need no tour, and Mérida is easy by bus on a call of eight hours or more. Take the ship's excursion for Chichén Itzá or Uxmal: both are long drives from the port, the sites stop admitting visitors at 15:00, and the ship will wait for its own tour buses but not for you. A tour is also the simpler choice for Dzibilchaltún, which has no direct public transport from the pier.

Common mistakes cruise passengers make in Progreso

Planning to walk off the pier.

Instead: The pier is about 6.5 km long. Use the free shuttle both ways and allow for the queue.

Trying to see Chichén Itzá or Uxmal independently on a short call.

Instead: Both are long drives and stop admitting visitors at 15:00. Book the ship's tour, or choose Mérida or Dzibilchaltún instead.

Leaving Mérida too late.

Instead: Board the bus 2 hours 30 minutes before all-aboard. The bus takes 40–60 minutes and you still need the pier shuttle.

Going to the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya on a Tuesday.

Instead: It is closed on Tuesdays.

Carrying only a card.

Instead: Food stalls and casual vendors often do not take cards. Carry some pesos; many taxis also take US dollars.

Safety: is Progreso safe for cruise passengers?

The US State Department rates Yucatán state at Level 1, exercise normal precautions (May 2026), with no specific restrictions on travel there for US government employees. Take normal care with valuables on the beach and in Mérida. Vendors on the Malecón can be persistent; a polite no is enough. Sea conditions and water quality at the town beach vary with weather and currents. In an emergency dial 911; not all operators speak English.

Emergency number: 911

Practical information

Crowds

The port authority's July 2026 report counts about 294,000 cruise passengers for 2026, a fifth more than in 2025. Get on an early shuttle, as queues form for both the shuttle and the Mérida bus. Return early too: the shuttle queue at the end of the day is the bottleneck.

Accessibility

The terminal and shuttle buses handle all passengers, as the pier cannot be walked; ask the ship in advance about accessible shuttle provision. The Malecón is a paved promenade. Mérida's Centro has narrow, uneven pavements. The Mayan sites involve long walks on rough paths and are hot, with limited shade.

If it rains

Go to Mérida for the Gran Museo del Mundo Maya (not on Tuesdays) and the cathedral and colonial buildings around the main square. In Progreso, the restaurants along the Malecón are the main shelter.
