Quick answer
Ships dock at Civitavecchia, about 70 km from Rome. Take the free port shuttle to Largo della Pace, walk 15–20 minutes to Civitavecchia station, then take the FL5 regional train. It costs €4.60 and takes 50–60 minutes to Roma San Pietro, or €5 and 75–85 minutes to Roma Termini (2026). Board a train back in Rome at least three hours before all-aboard. Pick one area of Rome, not two.
What DIY costs, and what the ship sells you
Ship excursion prices vary by line, so check your cruise planner. The DIY costs are fixed:
| Item | DIY cost (2026) |
|---|---|
| Port shuttle to Largo della Pace | Free |
| FL5 train, return | €9.20 to San Pietro, €10 to Termini |
| BIRG day ticket (train plus Rome metro, buses, trams) | €14 |
| Colosseum, Forum and Palatine | €18 plus booking fee; Full Experience €24 |
| Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel | €20 plus €5 online booking fee |
| St Peter's Basilica | Free |
| Pantheon | €7 |
| Trevi Fountain basin | €2 (09:00–22:00) |
What the ship's coach really buys you is protection. If the coach is late, the ship waits. If your train is late, it does not. Book the ship's tour if there is a rail strike on your date, if you have mobility problems, or if you want the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum on a short call. Otherwise the train is reliable enough for a careful, early-starting day.
Step 1: Ship to Civitavecchia station
Walking inside the port is not allowed. Take the free Port Mobility shuttle from your pier to Largo della Pace, the passenger hub by the port entrance. It runs about every 15–20 minutes and the ride takes 10–15 minutes.
From Largo della Pace, walk south along the seafront past Forte Michelangelo. The station is about 1–1.5 km away, roughly 15–20 minutes on a flat pavement. A station shuttle (€6 each way) and a local bus (about €2) also run, but the walk is usually as quick once queues are counted.
Ignore drivers offering rides to Rome at the port or the station. Use only licensed white taxis and agree the fare first.
Step 2: Buy and validate your ticket
The FL5 is a Trenitalia regional service with a fixed fare. You do not need to book ahead. Buy at the station machine, the counter or in the Trenitalia app.
- ·Roma San Pietro, Trastevere or Ostiense: €4.60 one way. 50–60 minutes to San Pietro.
- ·Roma Termini: €5 one way. 75–85 minutes.
- ·Frequency: two to three trains an hour for most of the day.
Paper tickets must be validated in the platform machine before you board. App tickets skip that step.
The BIRG day ticket (€14 for 5 zones) covers the return train plus Rome's metro, buses and trams until midnight. It pays off only if you will ride public transport in Rome several times. Two singles to San Pietro cost €9.20. The BIRG is sold at station counters and tobacconists, not online.
The Civitavecchia Express service has been suspended since June 2024. Do not plan around it.
Step 3: Choose your Rome station
Roma San Pietro is a 10-minute walk from St Peter's Square. It is the faster train and the natural stop for a Vatican-and-centre day.
Roma Termini is the easier start for the Colosseum. From San Pietro, allow 40 minutes each way to reach the Colosseum.
Step 4: Pick one area
With two train journeys you get four to five hours in Rome. That is enough for one area done well.
Vatican and the centre. St Peter's Basilica is free; allow 1–1.5 hours including security, and cover shoulders and knees. The Vatican Museums need 2.5–3 hours and a timed online booking. They are closed most Sundays, and the free last Sunday of the month is very crowded. From the Vatican, walk via Castel Sant'Angelo to Piazza Navona, the Pantheon and the Trevi Fountain.
Colosseum and the Forum. One 24-hour ticket covers the Colosseum, the Roman Forum and the Palatine. Allow 3 hours. Colosseum entry is by compulsory time slot, and slots are released 30 days ahead, so book as soon as your date opens. Tickets are issued in your name and checked against ID. Bring the ID that matches the booking.
Do not try to fit the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum into one cruise day.

The ship-safe return
The rule: be on a train leaving Rome at least three hours before all-aboard.
The train takes 50–60 minutes from San Pietro. Then you have the 15–20 minute walk to Largo della Pace, the shuttle and terminal security. That puts you on board about 90 minutes before all-aboard, with one train's worth of slack. Getting from the centre to San Pietro station adds 20–30 minutes on foot or by taxi. From Termini the ride is about 25 minutes longer, so leave Termini earlier.
| All-aboard | Latest train out of Rome |
|---|---|
| 17:00 | 14:00 |
| 18:00 | 15:00 |
| 18:30 | 15:30 |
| 19:00 | 16:00 |
Set a phone alarm for the time you must leave for the station, not for the train itself.
If something goes wrong
- ·Cancelled train: take the next FL5. They run every 20–30 minutes.
- ·Strike: regional trains run only in guaranteed bands, usually 06:00–09:00 and 18:00–21:00 on weekdays. Check Trenitalia the evening before. Do not go independently on a strike day. Take the ship's coach or the SIT coach (€12.50 one way, €25 return, from Largo della Pace).
- ·Taxi: a taxi from Rome to the port is the last resort. Agree the fare before you get in.
- ·Running late: call the port agent number in your daily programme. The ship will not wait for independent travellers.
Common mistakes
- ·Trying to do the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum in one day. Pick one area.
- ·Not validating a paper ticket. Stamp it on the platform, or use the app.
- ·Going independently on a strike day. Check the evening before.
- ·Catching the last possible train back. Leave three hours before all-aboard.
- ·Buying a BIRG when you only ride the train. Two singles are cheaper.
- ·Arriving at a Colosseum slot without the named ID. Tickets are nominative.

50–60 minutes to Roma San Pietro, 75–85 minutes to Roma Termini on the FL5 regional train (2026).

Yes. Entry is by compulsory time slot, slots are released 30 days ahead, and tickets are in your name.
