Is the train from Civitavecchia to Rome safe?
Yes, with ordinary care. The main risks are not personal safety:
- ·Strikes and delays. The FL5 is a regional commuter line. Check Trenitalia for strike notices the evening before.
- ·Ticket validation. Stamp paper tickets in the platform machine before boarding, or use the Trenitalia app.
- ·Pickpockets. They work around Termini, on crowded buses and on metro line A. Keep bags zipped and in front.
- ·Unlicensed drivers. People at Civitavecchia and Rome stations offer rides to Rome or back to the port. Use only licensed white taxis and agree the fare first.
- ·Return timing. This is the biggest risk. The ship will not wait for independent travellers.
Train, coach or ship transfer
The train is the cheapest option. A return to San Pietro costs €9.20 (two singles at €4.60).
The SIT coach runs from Largo della Pace to San Pietro (Via Crescenzio) and Termini (Piazza Indipendenza). It costs €12.50 one way or €25 return. Journey time depends on Rome's road traffic.
The ship's own transfer costs more, and prices vary by line. What it buys is protection: if the coach is late, the ship waits. Take it on a rail strike day or if you have limited mobility.
Step by step: Civitavecchia to Rome by train
Step 1. Shuttle to Largo della Pace
Walking inside the port is not allowed. The free Port Mobility shuttle runs from the cruise piers to Largo della Pace about every 15–20 minutes. The ride takes 10–15 minutes. At least one vehicle on duty is equipped for passengers with disabilities.
Step 2. Walk to the station
From Largo della Pace, walk south along the seafront past Forte Michelangelo. Civitavecchia station is about 1–1.5 km away, roughly 15–20 minutes on a flat pavement. A station shuttle (€6 each way) and a local bus (about €2) also run, but the walk is usually as quick once queues are counted.
Step 3. Buy your ticket
Buy at the station machine, the ticket counter or in the Trenitalia app. The fare is fixed, so there is no need to book ahead.
- ·€4.60 one way to Roma San Pietro, Trastevere or Ostiense
- ·€5 one way to Roma Termini
The BIRG day ticket (€14 for 5 zones) covers the return train plus Rome's metro, buses and trams. It only pays off if you will use public transport in Rome several times. It is sold at station counters and tobacconists, not online.
Step 4. Validate and board
Stamp a paper ticket in the platform machine before you board. App tickets do not need stamping. The Civitavecchia Express has been suspended since June 2024, so take the regular FL5.
Step 5. Get off at the right station
- ·Roma San Pietro: 10 minutes on foot to St Peter's Square. Best for the Vatican and the centre.
- ·Roma Termini: the longer ride, but the easier start for the Colosseum. From San Pietro, allow 40 minutes each way to the Colosseum.
Return timing: the most important part
The rule: be on a train leaving Rome at least three hours before all-aboard.
Example: for an 18:30 all-aboard, be on a train out of San Pietro by 15:30 at the latest. The train takes 50–60 minutes. Then the walk to Largo della Pace, the shuttle and terminal security. That gets you on board about 90 minutes early, with one train's worth of slack.
| All-aboard | Latest train out of Rome |
|---|---|
| 17:00 | 14:00 |
| 18:00 | 15:00 |
| 18:30 | 15:30 |
| 19:00 | 16:00 |
From Termini the ride is about 25 minutes longer, so leave Termini earlier. From the centre to San Pietro station, allow 20–30 minutes on foot or by taxi.
If your train is cancelled, take the next FL5; they run every 20–30 minutes. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you will be late.

Common mistakes
Trying to walk out of the port. It is not allowed. Use the free shuttle.
Not validating a paper ticket. Stamp it before boarding or use the app.
Buying a BIRG when you only ride the train. Two singles to San Pietro cost €9.20. The €14 BIRG pays off only with several metro or bus rides.
Going independently on a strike day. On strike days regional trains run only in guaranteed bands, usually 06:00–09:00 and 18:00–21:00 on weekdays. Take the ship's coach or the SIT coach.
Catching the last possible train back. Leave three hours before all-aboard.
What to do with your time in Rome
You get four to five hours in Rome. Choose one area:
- ·Vatican and the centre. St Peter's Basilica is free. The Vatican Museums cost €20 plus a €5 online booking fee and need 2.5–3 hours. Then walk to Piazza Navona, the Pantheon (€7) and the Trevi Fountain (€2 for the basin, 09:00–22:00).
- ·Colosseum, Forum and Palatine. €18 plus booking fee on one 24-hour ticket; Full Experience €24. Allow 3 hours. Time slots are released 30 days ahead and tickets are checked against ID.
Do not try both the Vatican Museums and the Colosseum on one port day.
Morning trains after 08:30 fill up with cruise passengers. An earlier train is quieter.
