Quick answer
Ships dock at the Stazione Marittima on Molo Angioino, in the city centre. Piazza del Plebiscito is 10–15 minutes on foot and Spaccanapoli about 15–20. For Pompeii, walk to Municipio, take metro Line 1 to Garibaldi, then the Circumvesuviana Sorrento line to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri: €3.30 and about 35 minutes (2026). Pompeii costs €20. Catch a train back from Pompeii at least three hours before all-aboard.
Where you dock
- ·Stazione Marittima (Molo Angioino): the main cruise terminal, run by Terminal Napoli, with shops and a pharmacy inside. Castel Nuovo and Piazza Municipio are directly opposite. Municipio metro (Line 1) is a few minutes' walk.
- ·Molo Beverello: next door. Hydrofoils and fast ferries to Capri, Sorrento and Ischia leave from here. It is not the cruise terminal, though cruisers often confuse the two.
Naples is not a tender port. You walk straight into the city.
Option A: Naples on foot
Naples itself needs no excursion.
Walking in: turn right out of the terminal for Piazza del Plebiscito and Galleria Umberto I (10–15 minutes), or cross Piazza Municipio and head up Via Toledo into Spaccanapoli (about 15–20 minutes). Pavements are uneven and traffic is heavy; cross at lights.
Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali (free): the straight streets that cut through the old town's Greek-Roman grid, lined with churches and pizzerias. Allow 1.5–2 hours. Detour into San Gregorio Armeno for the nativity-figure workshops.
Pizza: L'Antica Pizzeria da Michele (Via Cesare Sersale, near Garibaldi), Gino e Toto Sorbillo and Pizzeria Di Matteo (both on Via dei Tribunali). The best-known pizzerias have queues at lunchtime; eat early or late.
National Archaeological Museum (MANN): €20 (2026). The best finds from Pompeii and Herculaneum, including mosaics and frescoes. Allow 2 hours. Closed on Tuesdays. Museo station on Line 1, or about 10 minutes uphill beyond Spaccanapoli.
Cappella Sansevero: €12 (2026). Home of the Veiled Christ sculpture. Booking is required and tickets are named; book online up to 60 days ahead. Closed on Tuesdays except some summer dates. Allow 45 minutes.
Near the ship: Piazza del Plebiscito and the Royal Palace, Galleria Umberto I and Castel Nuovo, directly opposite the terminal.
Option B: Pompeii by Circumvesuviana
Getting there
- ·Walk to Municipio metro (a few minutes) and take Line 1 to Garibaldi (about 5 minutes).
- ·At Napoli Garibaldi, go down to the Circumvesuviana platforms. They are underground, usually platform 3, and reached by stairs only. You can also board at Porta Nolana, the line's first stop.
- ·Take the Sorrento line to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri. About 35 minutes. Trains run about every 30 minutes.
- ·The Porta Marina entrance is about 50 m from the station.
Do not get off at Pompei Santuario. Stay on to Pompei Scavi.
Tickets and validation
The Circumvesuviana is run by EAV. The fare is €3.30 one way (2026). Tap a contactless card or phone in and out at the gates, or validate a paper ticket in the yellow machines. Fines for unvalidated tickets are around €50.
Trains are often crowded and only newer ones have air conditioning. The Campania Express runs on the same line with reserved seats and air conditioning, about 30 minutes to Pompei Scavi, for €18.30 one way (including a €15 supplement). It runs mid-March to mid-October with only four departures each way, so plan the day around its timetable.
Pompeii tickets
- ·€20 basic; €25 Pompeii+, which adds the Villa of the Mysteries and other suburban villas (2026). Free for under-18s and on the first Sunday of the month.
- ·Since March 2026, only Vivaticket via the official site (pompeiisites.org) issues valid tickets. Tickets are named, so book in the name of each visitor.
- ·From mid-March to mid-October entries are capped at 20,000 a day in timed windows. The 09:00–13:00 window takes up to 15,000 of them. Book a few days ahead.
What to see in about three hours
Enter at Porta Marina. Cover the Forum, the baths, the House of the Faun and the route out to the amphitheatre. Bring water and a hat; there is little shade.
Return timing
The rule: catch a train back from Pompeii at least three hours before all-aboard.
The train takes about 35 minutes. The metro from Garibaldi and the walk to the terminal add about 25 minutes together. Trains run only every 30 minutes, and strikes and breakdowns on the Circumvesuviana are not rare.
| All-aboard | Latest train from Pompei Scavi |
|---|---|
| 17:00 | 14:00 |
| 17:30 | 14:30 |
| 18:00 | 15:00 |
| 19:00 | 16:00 |
From the old town, start walking back 75 minutes before all-aboard.
Scams and safety
Naples has a reputation that exceeds the reality for daytime visitors, but petty theft is common.
- ·Unofficial guides and ticket sellers outside Pompeii and near the stations. Buy tickets only through the official site; touts' tickets may not scan.
- ·Taxis that do not start the meter or quote inflated fares to Pompeii or the port. Use white licensed taxis and ask for the fixed tourist fare before you start.
- ·Pickpockets around Garibaldi station and on the Circumvesuviana. Keep bags zipped and in front.
- ·Street sellers near Garibaldi offering "new" phones that turn out to be fakes or empty boxes.
- ·Scooter snatches. Keep phones away from the kerb side.
Traffic is the most immediate danger. Cross at lights and watch for scooters on pavements.
The hybrid day (Pompeii and Naples)
Assumes docking at 08:00, a 17:30 all-aboard and a Pompeii ticket for the 09:00–13:00 window.
| Time | Plan |
|---|---|
| 08:15 | Leave the ship. Walk 5 minutes to Municipio, Line 1 to Garibaldi. |
| 08:40 | Circumvesuviana to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri (about 35 minutes). |
| 09:30 | Enter at Porta Marina. Forum, baths, House of the Faun, amphitheatre route. About three hours. |
| 12:45 | Leave the site. Aim for a train before 13:30. |
| 13:45 | From Garibaldi, walk or take Line 1 one stop to Duomo. Lunch on Via dei Tribunali. |
| 14:45 | Spaccanapoli, San Gregorio Armeno, Piazza del Gesù. |
| 15:30 | Down Via Toledo to Galleria Umberto I and Piazza del Plebiscito. |
| 16:00 | Back on board, 90 minutes before all-aboard. |
Backup plan
- ·Cancelled train: take the next one.
- ·Line down: take a licensed taxi from Pompei Scavi and agree the fare first.
- ·Running late: call the port agent number in your daily programme.
In Naples itself, the terminal is walkable from anywhere central.
DIY vs ship excursion
| Ship excursion (Pompeii) | DIY (2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Transport | Coach included | €6.60 return on the Circumvesuviana, plus metro |
| Pompeii entry | Included, often with a guide | €20 basic, €25 Pompeii+ |
| Total per person | Varies by line | About €27 |
The ship's coach is worth it in July and August heat, on a rail strike day, for anyone who struggles with stairs and crowded trains, or if you want Pompeii and Vesuvius together. The Amalfi Coast is too far for a safe independent day.
FAQ
Is Naples safe for independent tourists?
Yes in daylight in the centre, with the usual care. The port area, Via Toledo and the old town are busy and generally safe. Watch for pickpockets at Garibaldi and on trains, and keep phones away from passing scooters.
Is the Circumvesuviana reliable?
Usually, but it is crowded, trains run only every 30 minutes, and strikes happen. Check EAV notices the day before. Be on a return train three hours before all-aboard.
Can I walk to Pompeii from Naples?
No. Take the Circumvesuviana, about 35 minutes from Garibaldi.
What about Herculaneum?
Herculaneum is also reached by the Circumvesuviana. Check the current fare and opening hours on the official site before you go.
