Can You Visit Pompeii Without a Cruise Excursion?

Yes. From the Naples cruise terminal, Pompeii is a metro ride and about 35 minutes on the Circumvesuviana commuter train. The train costs €3.30 each way and Pompeii entry starts at €20 (2026). Ship excursion prices vary by line, so check your cruise planner. Here is how to do it on your own.

The direct answer

A DIY Pompeii morning costs about €27 per person: €6.60 for the return train plus the €20 basic ticket, with a little extra for the metro. The train is crowded and runs only every 30 minutes, so the return needs a wide margin.

Step by step: Naples cruise terminal to Pompeii

Step 1. Walk to Municipio metro

Ships dock at the Stazione Marittima on Molo Angioino. Municipio station (metro Line 1) is a few minutes' walk across Piazza Municipio.

Step 2. Line 1 to Garibaldi

About 5 minutes. Garibaldi is the stop for the main railway station and the Circumvesuviana.

Step 3. Find the Circumvesuviana platforms

At Napoli Garibaldi, the Circumvesuviana platforms are underground, usually platform 3, and reached by stairs only. You can also board at Porta Nolana, the line's first stop.

The Circumvesuviana is run by EAV, not Trenitalia.

Step 4. Pay and validate

  • ·Fare: €3.30 one way (2026)
  • ·How to pay: tap a contactless card or phone in and out at the gates, or validate a paper ticket in the yellow machines
  • ·Fines: around €50 for an unvalidated ticket

Step 5. Ride the Sorrento line to Pompei Scavi

Take the Sorrento line and get off at Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri. About 35 minutes. Do not get off at Pompei Santuario.

Trains run about every 30 minutes. They are often crowded and only newer ones have air conditioning.

Step 6. Walk to the entrance

The Porta Marina entrance is about 50 m from the station.

The Campania Express option

EAV's tourist service runs on the same line with reserved seats and air conditioning. It takes about 30 minutes to Pompei Scavi and costs €18.30 one way, including a €15 supplement (2026). It runs mid-March to mid-October with only four departures in each direction, so fit your day to its timetable.

Pompeii tickets

  • ·Basic: €20 (2026)
  • ·Pompeii+: €25, adds the Villa of the Mysteries and other suburban villas
  • ·Free: under-18s, and everyone on the first Sunday of the month
  • ·Where to buy: since March 2026, only Vivaticket via the official site (pompeiisites.org) issues valid tickets
  • ·Named tickets: book in the name of each visitor; touts' tickets may not scan
  • ·Daily cap: from mid-March to mid-October entries are capped at 20,000 a day in timed windows; book a few days ahead

The 09:00–13:00 window takes up to 15,000 of the daily entries. Coach groups arrive from late morning, so arriving at opening helps.

What to see in about three hours

Enter at Porta Marina and focus on:

  • ·The Forum, the city's civic centre
  • ·The baths
  • ·The House of the Faun
  • ·The route out to the amphitheatre

With a Pompeii+ ticket you can add the Villa of the Mysteries. Bring water and a hat; there is little shade. In heavy rain the site is slippery and exposed.

Return timing: critical

The rule: catch a train back from Pompeii at least three hours before all-aboard.

The train takes about 35 minutes. The metro from Garibaldi and the walk to the terminal add about 25 minutes together. Trains run only every 30 minutes, and strikes and breakdowns on the Circumvesuviana are not rare.

If a train is cancelled, take the next one. If the line is down, take a licensed taxi from Pompei Scavi and agree the fare first. Call the port agent number in your daily programme if you will be late.

When the ship excursion makes sense

The train works for confident travellers on a weekday with no strike. The ship's coach is worth it:

  • ·in July and August heat
  • ·on a rail strike day
  • ·if you struggle with stairs and crowded trains; Garibaldi's Circumvesuviana platforms have stairs only, and Pompeii's streets are rough basalt with high kerbs
  • ·if you want Pompeii and Vesuvius together, which is hard by public transport in one call

Common mistakes

  • ·Getting off at Pompei Santuario. Stay on to Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri.
  • ·Buying from a non-official site or tout. Only the official channel issues valid tickets.
  • ·Turning up without a ticket in summer. Book a few days ahead.
  • ·Not validating a paper ticket. Stamp it, or tap in and out with a contactless card.
  • ·Cutting the return fine. Be on a train three hours before all-aboard.
