When a cruise ship docks in Naples, passengers face a choice that most of them don't realise they're making. The conventional itinerary — everyone on the coach to Pompeii — is a fine choice. But it bypasses one of the greatest cities in Italy, a city whose own historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, whose food culture is the origin point of the world's most eaten dish, and whose National Archaeological Museum contains the finest collection of Roman artefacts anywhere on the planet. This guide is for the passengers who want to make the choice consciously: Naples or Pompeii, or both — and how to do either exceptionally well.

The Naples case: why the city itself is worth your full day

Naples has a reputation — for chaos, for traffic, for the Camorra — that has caused millions of cruise passengers to pass through on their way to Pompeii without giving the city itself a second look. This is one of the great miscalculations in Mediterranean travel.

The historic centre of Naples (Centro Storico) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site: two kilometres of continuous urban fabric largely unchanged since the Greco-Roman period, layered over 2,500 years of civilisation. Spaccanapoli — the long, laser-straight street that bisects the old town along the line of the original Greek city grid — is one of the finest urban experiences in Europe. You walk through it feeling the centuries in the architecture, the street food, the noise, the incense from baroque churches, the laundry strung between medieval palaces.

The National Archaeological Museum (MANN) is the finest collection of Roman artefacts in existence. The original mosaics and frescoes removed from Pompeii — the famous Alexander Mosaic, the Secret Cabinet of erotic artefacts, the extraordinary domestic objects of everyday Roman life — are here, displayed with world-class curation. Visiting MANN takes 90–120 minutes and costs €18. You will understand Pompeii better having first seen what it looked like.

Pizza: Naples is where pizza was invented, and the Neapolitan pizza — a specific, legally protected product with strict ingredient and preparation standards — is unlike anything called pizza elsewhere. Sorbillo (Via dei Tribunali 32), Di Matteo (Via dei Tribunali 94), and l'Antica Pizzeria da Michele (Via Cesare Sersale 1) all produce the genuine article for €7–10 per pizza. These are not meals. They are experiences.

The Pompeii case: how to do it properly

Pompeii is one of the great archaeological sites of the world, and the case for spending your Naples port day there is straightforward: it is genuinely extraordinary, it is comprehensively preserved, and it gives direct contact with Roman domestic life at a level no museum can replicate.

The Circumvesuviana railway from Napoli Garibaldi station is the correct transport. Napoli Garibaldi is in Piazza Garibaldi — a 35-minute walk from the terminal or an €8–12 taxi. At Garibaldi, the Circumvesuviana operates from basement platforms (following signs for "Sorrentino" line, direction Sorrento). Cost: €4.50 each way. Journey: 35–40 minutes. Trains every 30 minutes. Depart Garibaldi no later than 09:00 for reasonable site timing.

Critical logistics: book your Pompeii tickets online before the port day (ticketing.pompeiiisites.org). Entry is €18. In summer, the on-site ticket queue runs 45–75 minutes. Pre-booked tickets allow direct entry. The site opens at 09:00; arrive at 10:00 (after the train journey) for the best experience before the midday heat becomes oppressive.

Allow 2.5–3 hours inside Pompeii. The site covers 44 hectares — significantly larger than most first-time visitors expect. The key areas: the Forum (the civic and religious centre of the city), the House of the Faun (the finest private residence), the amphitheatre (the oldest surviving Roman amphitheatre in the world), the Villa of the Mysteries, and the plaster casts of the eruption victims.

The hybrid day: is both Naples and Pompeii achievable?

On port days of 10–12 hours with an all-aboard time of 18:00 or later, the combination of Naples morning and Pompeii afternoon is achievable with precise timing. It requires pre-booked Pompeii tickets, no deviations from the schedule, and acceptance that both halves will be somewhat compressed.

The hybrid timeline: 08:30 — arrive Naples terminal. Walk to historic centre (15 minutes). Spaccanapoli and MANN (1 hour 45 minutes total). 10:30 — Pizza at Di Matteo or Sorbillo (30 minutes). 11:15 — Walk or taxi to Piazza Garibaldi. 11:45 — Circumvesuviana train to Pompeii Scavi. 12:30 — Arrive Pompeii. 2 hours at site. 14:30 — Return Circumvesuviana from Pompeii Scavi. 15:30 — Arrive Napoli Garibaldi. Walk or taxi to terminal. 16:30 — Terminal, through security, on board. All-aboard 18:00.

This works with 90 minutes of buffer. If all-aboard is 17:00, this is too tight and you must choose one. If all-aboard is 19:00, it's comfortably achievable.

The important caveat: doing both means not doing either fully. MANN deserves 2 hours. Pompeii deserves 3 hours. The hybrid day gives you 45 minutes at MANN and 2 hours at Pompeii — a genuine experience of each, but not the full immersion either deserves. If you have time, choose the one that matters more to you and do it properly.

Naples logistics: transport, costs, and what most passengers miss

The Naples cruise terminal at Molo Beverello is on the central waterfront. Walking to Spaccanapoli takes 15–20 minutes along a straightforward route: up Via Depretis from the waterfront to Via Toledo, then right into the beginning of the old town network. Download an offline map before you arrive — Google Maps works without data once the map is cached.

The taxi situation in Naples has a specific reputation for overcharging. Always request the meter (tassametro) before getting in, or agree a fixed fare beforehand. Legal fixed fares from the port area to Piazza Garibaldi are approximately €10–12. If the driver won't use the meter and quotes significantly more, get out. Taxis are not the only option — Piazza Garibaldi is a long walk, but it's flat and straightforward.

Total cost comparison: Naples pure DIY day (Spaccanapoli, MANN, pizza, incidentals): €25–40 per person. Pompeii pure DIY day (train, entry, snack): €30–38 per person. Hybrid day: €55–70 per person. Ship excursion to Pompeii: typically €89–110 per person, coach transport, group entry. The DIY saving is €50–80 per person on the Pompeii excursion alone.

What most cruise passengers miss entirely: Naples' Quartieri Spagnoli neighbourhood (immediately west of Via Toledo) is extraordinary — denser, more atmospheric, and more authentically Neapolitan than even Spaccanapoli. Allow 30 minutes if time permits.
