Put these leave-by times on your blog, freeValletta is one of the few Mediterranean ports where the capital sits directly above the ship. The city is on a ridge about 60 metres above the quay, so the only real question is how you get up: the public lift, the uphill road through Floriana, or a taxi. Once on top, everything that matters is within a 15-minute walk on a level grid of streets. The catch is the calendar: St John's Co-Cathedral, the main reason most people come, is closed on Sundays and public holidays.
Walkable? Yes · about 20 min (1.5 km)
Walk east along the flat Waterfront promenade to the lower station of the Upper Barrakka lift (about 10–15 minutes depending on your berth), then ride up to Upper Barrakka Gardens at the edge of the old city. Without the lift, the walk is about 25–30 minutes uphill via Crucifix Hill and Floriana to City Gate, on pavements but with a sustained climb and little shade. Inside the walls the main streets (Republic Street, Merchants Street) run along the ridge and are fairly level, but every side street falls steeply towards the harbours, often in long flights of steps.
Where your ship docks
Upper Barrakka lift
€1 same-day return (2026); free with a personalised tallinja cardUnder 1 minute ride; 10–15 min walk from the ship to the lower station
Run by Transport Malta. Pay at the ticket machines/turnstiles at the bottom. Transport Malta describes the €1 fare as a return valid on the same day; in practice the charge is taken going up and the ride down has been free. Hours in October: daily 06:30–00:00; November–April 06:30–22:00 (to 23:30 Fri–Sat). The lift tops out at Upper Barrakka Gardens, a five-minute walk from St John's Co-Cathedral. Expect queues mid-afternoon when several ships are in.
Bus Route 130 (Malta Public Transport)
€2.50 summer day fare, €2 winter day fare (2026); ticket valid 2 hoursAbout 15 minutes, 3 stops, to Valletta bus terminus at City Gate
Board at the Waterfront stop. Buy from the driver with cash, contactless bank card or phone. The winter fare ran from 19 October 2025 to 13 June 2026; check the current season before you travel. Useful mainly if you want to avoid the climb and the lift queue, or to connect at the Valletta terminus for Mdina (Route 50 and others, about 30 minutes).
Taxi
Rates displayed at the Waterfront booking office; not published onlineAbout 7 minutes to the city centre
The Waterfront taxi and tour office sells rides at set rates. Ride-hailing apps operate in Malta. Agree or confirm the price before getting in.
Valletta–Three Cities ferry (Cospicua)
€1.50 single / €2.80 return day fares reported (2026); cashlessA few minutes' crossing
Leaves from the harbour below the Upper Barrakka lift, close to the lower station. Run as part of the tallinja network; Malta Public Transport says the service is cashless and that passengers arriving from Cospicua are given a ticket for the Upper Barrakka lift. A second route links Valletta (Marsamxett side) with Sliema.
Horse cab (karozzin) and hop-on hop-off bus
Agree in advance; not publishedVaries
Horse cabs wait on the road beside the Waterfront and hop-on hop-off tickets are sold from booths on the promenade. Neither is needed to reach the city.
Know your all-aboard time? Build the whole day around it.
For a 17:30 all-aboard, be in the queue at the top of the Upper Barrakka lift by 16:00 and on the ship by 16:30.
The lift ride is short, but the queue at the top can take 10–20 minutes when several ships are in port, and the walk back along the Waterfront to your berth is another 10–15 minutes. Allow 30–45 minutes from Upper Barrakka Gardens to the gangway. If you went to Mdina, leave Mdina by 15:00: the bus to Valletta takes about 30 minutes and can be full.
If you're running late
If the lift queue is long, walk down: from the Victoria Gate side of the city a road and steps lead down to the Waterfront in about 15 minutes. From further afield, take a taxi or ride-hail car straight to the Valletta Waterfront; it is about 7 minutes from the city centre. Keep the ship's port agent number (on your daily programme) to hand.
Assumes docking 08:00 at the Waterfront on a Monday to Saturday (St John's is closed Sundays and public holidays).
08:15 Walk east along the Waterfront to the lower station of the Upper Barrakka lift (10–15 minutes).
08:35 Ride up (€1). Look over the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities from Upper Barrakka Gardens before the crowds.
09:00 St John's Co-Cathedral at opening time. Allow 60–75 minutes with the included audio guide; the Caravaggio oratory is the focus.
10:20 Walk Republic Street to the Grandmaster's Palace (State Rooms and Armoury). Allow about an hour.
11:45 Back to Upper Barrakka Gardens for the noon gun salute from the Saluting Battery below (Monday to Saturday).
12:15 Lunch: pastizzi or a ftira from a café, or the food hall at Is-Suq tal-Belt on Merchants Street.
13:30 Either walk to Lower Barrakka Gardens and Fort St Elmo (National War Museum), or ride the lift down and take the ferry to the Three Cities for Birgu's waterfront.
15:30 Head back. If you crossed to the Three Cities, take the ferry back to Valletta by 15:45.
16:00 Ride the lift down (or join the queue at the top by 16:00) and walk back along the Waterfront.
16:30 Back on board, 60 minutes before all-aboard.

For Valletta itself the ship tour adds little: you can do the city alone with the lift and a ticket. A ship excursion makes sense for Gozo (a ferry crossing plus driving, with a hard time limit), for the Blue Grotto and south coast, or if you have limited mobility and want door-to-door transport without managing buses. Mdina is easy by public bus, but the buses can be slow and crowded; if your call is short (under 7 hours) a tour is the safer way to see both Valletta and Mdina.
Planning St John's Co-Cathedral on a Sunday or public holiday.
Instead: It is closed then. Check your port day; on a Sunday, focus on the gardens, the Three Cities or Mdina.
Walking up the hill from the ship in midday heat.
Instead: Use the Upper Barrakka lift (€1); the climb via Floriana is long and exposed.
Wearing heels or bringing a backpack to St John's.
Instead: Stiletto and narrow heels are refused and there are no lockers. Wear flat shoes and carry a small bag.
Leaving the return lift to the last half hour.
Instead: Queues build mid-afternoon. Be at the top of the lift by 16:00 for a 17:30 all-aboard.
Trying to fit Valletta, Mdina and a beach into one day.
Instead: Bus journeys are slower than the map suggests. Pick Valletta plus one other place.
Valletta is a low-crime city and the centre is busy and well lit. The main risks are petty: pickpocketing in crowded spots (the lift queues, Republic Street, the Co-Cathedral entrance) and traffic on the roads around City Gate and Floriana. Pavements are often narrow, stone steps are polished and slippery when wet, and summer heat on the exposed bastions is the most likely problem for most visitors. Carry water and a hat from June to September.
Scams and tourist traps
Emergency number: 112
Crowds
Valletta regularly hosts several large ships at once, and most passengers arrive in the city between 09:00 and 11:00. The Co-Cathedral is busiest mid-morning; go at 09:00 opening or after 14:30 (last entry 16:00). The lift is busiest going up just after the ships open their gangways and going down in the last two hours before sailing. Check the port's published schedule to see how many ships share your day.
Accessibility
The Waterfront promenade is flat. The Upper Barrakka lift gives step-free access from the harbour to the old city and is the route to use with a wheelchair or walker. Inside the walls, Republic Street and Merchants Street are manageable, but most cross streets are steep or stepped, and some pavements are narrow. St John's Co-Cathedral admits wheelchair users but some areas are not accessible; contact the cathedral ahead with questions. The cruise terminal offers wheelchair assistance through Guest Services. Valletta is a docking port, so there are no tender transfers.
If it rains
Valletta has more indoor options than most ports. Start with St John's Co-Cathedral, then the Grandmaster's Palace and the National War Museum at Fort St Elmo. MUŻA, the national art museum, is in the Auberge d'Italie on Merchant Street. Streets turn slippery in rain, so wear shoes with grip and use Republic Street rather than the stepped side streets.

Your whole cruise, planned like this
The day plan above assumes a 17:30 all-aboard. Your ship's times will differ, and so will every other stop. Pro builds the plan from your ship's real times: a timed day in Valletta and every other port, a leave-by time for each stop, and a Plan B if you run late. Ultimate adds a live leave-by countdown from where you are on the day. Every plan uses the same checked facts as this guide. Nothing is made up.
