The short answer: at most big Mediterranean ports, a careful independent day costs a small fraction of a ship tour. Ship excursion prices vary by line, so check your own cruise planner. What we can give you is the other side of the sum: what the same day costs on public transport, from our checked port guides.

The longer answer depends on the port, the length of the call and how you cope with trains, stairs and queues.

What a DIY day actually costs

When a ship excursion is the right call

This is not an anti-excursion guide. The ship tour has one real advantage: if the ship's own coach is late, the ship waits. If you are on your own, it does not.

Strike days. Italian and Greek transport strikes are regular. On a rail strike day in Rome or Naples, or a metro strike in Athens, take the ship's tour.

Long journeys on a short call. Florence is 70–90 minutes each way by train, and you need to be on a train out of Santa Maria Novella 3.5 hours before all-aboard. Rome needs a train leaving the city 3 hours before all-aboard. On a short call that leaves little time in the city.

Tender ports in high season. At Santorini every ship anchors. The cable car moves about 600 people an hour downhill and the afternoon queue can take an hour or more. Kotor tenders large ships, which adds 30–60 minutes each way.

Mobility limits. Stations, metro stairs, Santorini's 560–600 steps and Lisbon's steep cobbles add up. Coach drop-offs cut most of the walking.

Hard-to-reach sights. Pompeii and Vesuvius together, the Corinth Canal, Cape Sounion and Montserrat are all difficult to fit into one call by public transport.

No tickets left. If you could not get an Acropolis, Colosseum or Sagrada Família slot for your date, a ship tour may still have access.

When you can skip the excursion

Walk-off ports. Kotor, Split, Valletta and Naples old town are reachable on foot from the ship. Nothing to book except the paid sights.

Ports with a simple shuttle or metro. Barcelona's Cruise Bus takes about 10 minutes. Athens has the metro from Piraeus. Lisbon's Jardim do Tabaco terminal is a 14-minute flat walk from Praça do Comércio.

Ports you know. If you have done the logistics before, the main argument for the coach falls away.

Sights you can book yourself. The Colosseum, Acropolis, Sagrada Família, Pompeii and St Mark's Basilica all sell timed tickets online. Book on the official sites, not from touts.

The real risk of going alone: return timing

The ship will not wait for independent passengers. If you miss it, reaching the next port is your problem. There is no single safe buffer that works everywhere. Use the leave-by rule for your port:

PortLeave-by rule (17:30 all-aboard unless stated)
RomeOn a train leaving Rome 3 hours before all-aboard (15:30 from San Pietro for 18:30)
Naples / PompeiiOn a train back from Pompeii 3 hours before (14:30); from the old town, start walking 75 min before
AthensOn the metro by 14:45 (Terminal A) or 14:30 (Terminals B and C)
BarcelonaAt the Cruise Bus stop 75 min before (16:15)
DubrovnikLeave Pile Gate by 15:45
SantoriniAt the top cable car station 2.5 hours before (15:00); leave Oia by 14:00
KotorAt the tender pier by 16:00
MykonosAt the Old Port Sea Bus or tender pier by 16:00

Check your all-aboard time in the daily programme and save the port agent's number in your phone.

What a 7-night Mediterranean cruise costs DIY

Take a typical itinerary: Rome, Naples, Santorini, Mykonos, Athens, Dubrovnik, Kotor. Using each guide's typical DIY day, the total comes to about €250 per person, before food. Compare that with your line's excursion prices for the same ports.

Frequently asked questions

Are cruise excursions worth the money? At ports with easy transport, such as Barcelona, Athens, Dubrovnik and Naples, a DIY day usually costs far less. Ship tours earn their price on strike days, at busy tender ports, for long journeys like Florence, and for anyone who struggles with stairs and crowded trains.

Do I have to book a ship excursion? No. You can go ashore on your own during port hours. Know your all-aboard time, plan the return before you leave, and follow the port's leave-by rule.

How much does a DIY port day cost? From our checked guides, a typical DIY day ranges from about €20 in Kotor to about €64 in Venice, including transport and the main paid sight.

What happens if I miss the ship? It leaves without you. You arrange and pay for your own travel to the next port. Call the port agent number in your daily programme as soon as you know you will be late.
