The basics
Port location: Gruž, about 3 km north-west of the Old Town Tender or dock: Most ships dock at Gruž. Under the port's "2+1" arrangement, two ships berth and one more may anchor off the Old Town and tender passengers into the old harbour. Difficulty for independent travel: Easy, as long as you respect the return time Ship excursion price: Varies by cruise line DIY walls day: About €45 (bus both ways plus the walls ticket, 2026)
Getting from Gruž to the Old Town
Libertas bus 1A or 1B
Lines 1A and 1B run Mokošica–Pile along the Gruž harbour road. Pile is the terminus, just outside the main Old Town gate.
- ·Cost: €2.50 for a single ride bought on board. A one-hour ticket costs €1.73 if you buy it in advance at a Libertas sales point, a Tisak kiosk or in the Libertas app. The driver sells only the single ride (2026).
- ·Journey time: 15–20 minutes to Pile Gate
- ·Frequency: roughly every 15–25 minutes in daytime
- ·In July and August buses fill up near the port. If one is full, wait for the next.
A 24-hour ticket costs €5.31 (2026). It is only worth it for three or more rides. The Dubrovnik Pass also includes unlimited city buses.
On foot
About 3 km, 35–45 minutes along busy roads with some climbing. Fine on a cool day if you are fit. Most people take the bus and save their legs for the walls.
Taxi, Uber or Bolt
Taxis wait at the terminal. Fares vary, so check the meter is on or agree the price first. The ride takes 10–15 minutes, or up to 30 minutes in summer traffic. Cars cannot enter the Old Town, so you are dropped at Pile or Ploče.
Cruise line shuttle
Many lines run one, often for a fee. It uses the same road and sits in the same traffic as the bus. Check where it stops and when the last one returns.
If your ship tenders
You land in the old harbour on the Ploče side and skip the bus entirely. Allow for tender queues on the way back.
The city walls: what you need to know
The walls are a 2 km circuit above the Old Town, with views over the roofs and the sea. They are the main reason most cruise passengers come.
Entry: €40 adult, €15 child aged 7–18 (2026). The ticket includes Fort Lovrijenac. Walking time: 1.5–2 hours Entrances: Pile, near Onofrio's Fountain, is the main one. Starting at Ploče is quieter. Rules: One circuit, one entry. You cannot leave and re-enter. Shade: Almost none. Carry water.
Buy at the official ticket office by Onofrio's Fountain, at the wall entrances or on the official webshop. Resellers add a markup.
The crowd problem: The port authority's 2026 policy caps simultaneous cruise visitors at about 4,000. Crowds on Stradun and the walls still peak between about 09:30 and 13:00. Be on the walls by 09:00, or after 15:00.
A day plan for a 17:30 all-aboard
Assumes docking at Gruž at 08:00 on a summer weekday.
| Time | Action | Cost (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| 08:15 | Leave the ship. Bus 1A or 1B to Pile | €2.50 on board |
| 08:45 | Enter the walls at Pile and walk the full circuit before 10:30 | €40 |
| 10:45 | Stradun to Luža Square. Rector's Palace or the Franciscan Monastery | Included in the Dubrovnik Pass |
| 12:15 | Lunch in a side street north of Stradun, or oysters at Kamenice on Gundulić Square | Varies |
| 13:30 | Exit through Ploče Gate and take the cable car up Mount Srđ. Allow 60–75 minutes | €30 return |
| 15:00 | Back down. Walk through the Old Town to Pile, or visit Fort Lovrijenac on your walls ticket | — |
| 15:45 | Bus 1A or 1B from Pile to Gruž | €2.50 |
| 16:30 | Back on board, one hour before all-aboard | — |
The cable car or Lokrum?
Mount Srđ cable car: A four-minute ride to about 400 m above the Old Town. €30 return or €17 one way for adults (2026). The lower station is about five minutes' walk from Ploče Gate. Service stops in strong wind or lightning, so check before you queue.
Lokrum: A wooded nature reserve 15 minutes by boat from the old harbour, with a botanical garden, peacocks, rocky swimming and a sheltered salt lake. The boat costs €30 return including reserve entry (2026). Boats leave roughly every 30 minutes in season. Allow 2.5–3 hours. Note the last boat time at the dock and keep your ticket for the return.
Choose Lokrum only on a long call. On a normal day, the cable car fits more easily around the walls.
The Dubrovnik Pass
The one-day pass costs €40 (2026), the same as a walls ticket. It adds the Rector's Palace, the Franciscan Monastery, other museums and unlimited city buses. On a cruise day that is often the better buy.
Ship excursion or DIY?
Ship excursion prices vary by line. For the Old Town, walls and cable car you do not need one. The bus is cheap and everything is signed.
A ship tour makes sense for trips that depend on road timing, such as Ston, Cavtat or the Konavle valley. It also helps if you have limited mobility and want a guaranteed seat both ways. The ship waits for its own tours, which matters if the bus back is overloaded.
Common mistakes at Dubrovnik cruise port
Starting the walls at 11:00 in July. Midday means queues, heat and stop-start walking. Be on the walls by 09:00 or after 15:00.
Eating on Stradun. Walk one or two streets away. The same dishes cost noticeably less.
Buying walls tickets from resellers. Use the official office, the wall entrances or the official webshop.
Paying separately for Lovrijenac. Your walls ticket already includes it.
Leaving the bus back to the last moment. Summer buses fill and traffic stalls on the single road to Gruž.
Return timing guide
The rule: leave Pile Gate 105 minutes before all-aboard. That is 15:45 for a 17:30 all-aboard.
The ride is 15–20 minutes on a clear road. In summer the coast road backs up and full buses pass the Pile stop. Allow for a missed bus, a slow ride and the walk through the port, and you need about 45 minutes. That puts you on board about an hour before all-aboard.
| All-aboard | Leave Pile Gate by | Aim to be on board by |
|---|---|---|
| 16:00 | 14:15 | 15:00 |
| 17:00 | 15:15 | 16:00 |
| 17:30 | 15:45 | 16:30 |
| 18:00 | 16:15 | 17:00 |
If you are running late, take a taxi from the rank at Pile rather than waiting for a bus. If you will miss all-aboard, call the port agent on the number in your daily programme. Ships do not wait for independent passengers.
