Valletta Cruise Port Guide: Walk Everywhere and See the Highlights
Ships dock at the Valletta Waterfront in the Grand Harbour, so there is no tender. The city sits on a ridge about 60 metres above the quay. Walk 10–15 minutes along the quay to the Upper Barrakka lift, pay €1 and you are in the city in under a minute. Once on top, everything that matters is within a 15-minute walk.
The basics
Port location: Valletta Waterfront, Grand Harbour (terminal in the Magazino Hall) Distance to city centre: about 1.5 km; 10–15 minutes' walk to the lift, then under a minute up Upper Barrakka lift: €1 same-day return (2026) Ship excursion price: varies by line; check your cruise planner Typical DIY cost: about €25 Key rule: St John's Co-Cathedral is closed on Sundays and public holidays
Getting from the ship to Valletta
Lift (fastest): Walk east along the flat Waterfront promenade to the lower station of the Upper Barrakka lift, about 10–15 minutes depending on your berth. The €1 fare is a same-day return (2026); a personalised tallinja card rides free. You come out at Upper Barrakka Gardens, five minutes' walk from St John's. In October the lift runs daily 06:30–00:00. Expect queues mid-afternoon when several ships are in.
Walk all the way: About 25–30 minutes uphill via Crucifix Hill and Floriana to City Gate. It is a sustained climb with little shade.
Bus Route 130: From the Waterfront stop to the Valletta terminus at City Gate, about 15 minutes. €2.50 summer day fare, €2 winter day fare (2026), valid 2 hours. Pay the driver by cash, contactless card or phone.
Taxi: About 7 minutes to the city centre. Rates are displayed at the Waterfront booking office. Confirm the price before you get in.
There is no dedicated port shuttle. Inside the walls, Republic Street and Merchants Street are fairly level, but the side streets drop steeply in long flights of steps.
What to see
Upper Barrakka Gardens and the Saluting Battery: The best view of the Grand Harbour and the Three Cities, directly above the cruise berths. Gardens free (2026). The battery fires a salute at 12:00 and 16:00, Monday to Saturday.
St John's Co-Cathedral: €15 adults, €12 seniors and students, under-12s free with an adult (2026). A gilded Baroque interior, marble tomb slabs and Caravaggio's Beheading of St John the Baptist. Open Monday to Saturday 09:00–16:45, last entry 16:00. Allow 60–90 minutes. No stiletto or narrow heels, cover shoulders, and leave big bags on the ship: there are no lockers. Buy online.
The Grandmaster's Palace: Heritage Malta tickets €12–€18 depending on category (2026). State Rooms and one of Europe's larger collections of arms and armour. Allow about an hour. State Rooms can close at short notice for official functions.
Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum: The star fort at the tip of the peninsula, about 15 minutes' walk from the Co-Cathedral. Check Heritage Malta for the current price. Allow 75–90 minutes. Lower Barrakka Gardens (free) is on the way.
The Three Cities (Birgu, Senglea, Cospicua): Across the harbour, quieter than Valletta. The ferry leaves near the bottom of the Upper Barrakka lift: about €1.50 single or €2.80 return (2026), cashless. Allow 2–3 hours.
Mdina: The walled former capital in the centre of the island. Route 50 from the Valletta bus terminus takes about 30 minutes; €2–2.50 each way (2026). Allow half a day, and only try it if you are in port for 8 hours or more.
What the ship excursion includes
Ship excursion prices vary by line. For Valletta itself the ship tour adds little: the lift and a cathedral ticket cover it.
DIY equivalents (2026):
- ·Valletta walk: €1 lift plus €15 Co-Cathedral
- ·Mdina and Rabat: two bus fares, €4–5
- ·Three Cities: ferry €2.80 return
A ship excursion makes sense for Gozo, the Blue Grotto and south coast, or if you have limited mobility. If your call is under 7 hours, a tour is the safer way to see both Valletta and Mdina.

The rule: be in the queue at the top of the lift 90 minutes before all-aboard (16:00 for 17:30). From Mdina, leave 2.5 hours before all-aboard (15:00 for 17:30); the bus takes about 30 minutes and can be full.
