Split Cruise Port Guide: Diocletian's Palace, Beaches and Trogir

Split is a working city built into a Roman emperor's retirement palace from around AD 300. The cruise berths sit right beside it. You need no transport for the Old Town, and the palace streets cost nothing.

The basics

Where ships dock: Split city port. Either the inner quays near the Riva, or the outer berths on the St Duje breakwater. Walk to the palace: 5–10 minutes from the inner quays, 15–20 minutes from the breakwater. Flat and paved. Tender: Mainly a docking port, but some ships anchor and tender when the berths are full. Ship excursion price: Varies by cruise line DIY cost: Low. The palace streets are free; you pay only for the cellars, cathedral, bell tower and temple you choose.

Getting from the ship to the palace

Walk. Follow the harbour edge west to the Riva promenade. The Bronze Gate into the palace cellars is halfway along it.

From the far end of the breakwater, allow 20 minutes. There is little shade, and the harbour road is busy with ferry traffic and coaches. Some ships on the breakwater run a shuttle to the Riva; prices vary by line, so ask at the gangway.

What to see inside Diocletian's Palace

The palace is not a ruin you view from outside. People still live in it, and restaurants, bars and shops fill the old walls.

The Peristyle and the palace streets — the central square and the lanes around it. Free, and open 24 hours, as are all four gates. Come before 09:30 or after 16:00 for space.

Palace cellars (substructures) — the vaulted halls under the palace, which preserve its original floor plan. The east and west halls cost €10; the central corridor from the Bronze Gate is free (2026). Allow 45 minutes.

Cathedral of St Domnius and bell tower — Diocletian's mausoleum turned cathedral, with a 57 m Romanesque bell tower. Separate and combined tickets are sold; combinations are reported at about €7–15 (2026). Cover shoulders and knees. The tower stairs are steep and narrow near the top, so climb first thing.

Jupiter's Temple — a small Roman temple later used as a baptistery. €4, or included in some cathedral combinations (2026). Check your cathedral ticket first.

Golden Gate and Iron Gate — walk out through the Golden Gate to the Grgur Ninski statue, then through the Iron Gate to People's Square.

Ship excursion or DIY?

Ship excursion prices vary by line. You do not need one for Split itself: the palace is beside the ship and the streets are free.

A ship tour is worth paying for to Krka National Park (about 1.5 hours each way, only realistic on a 9–10 hour call), for island trips by boat, or if you want Trogir and Klis in one day without managing buses.

Beaches near Split

Bačvice — a shallow, sandy-pebble city beach about 5–10 minutes' walk east of the port. Free. Busy in summer, and home of the local ball game picigin.

Kasjuni — a pebble cove below Marjan Hill, quieter than Bačvice. Take a taxi or bus. Free; sunbeds cost extra.

Marjan Hill

A wooded park on the peninsula west of the centre. The first viewpoint is about 15–20 minutes' climb up steps from Varoš. Free. Take water.

Return timing

The rule: be back on board 60 minutes before all-aboard. From the breakwater berths, leave the Riva 90 minutes before. From the inner quays, leave 75 minutes before.

The walk back to the outer berths takes 15–20 minutes, plus security at the gangway. Late-afternoon ferry departures can block the harbour road.

Trips beyond the palace

Trogir. A small walled UNESCO town on an islet 30 km west. Promet bus €2.50 by app, ticket machine or office, or €5 from the driver (2026). The ride takes about 40–60 minutes depending on traffic; a pre-booked car takes about 35–40 minutes. Allow 3.5–4 hours including travel. Go in the morning and aim to be back in Split by 15:30.

Klis Fortress. A hilltop fortress above Split. Buses are infrequent, so a taxi or Uber is safer. Allow 2.5–3 hours including travel.

Krka National Park. Only on a long call of about 9–10 hours. On a 7-hour call, choose Trogir or Klis instead.

From Trogir or Klis, take a taxi or Uber straight to your berth if you are running late.

Common mistakes

Paying for a palace "entry" ticket. The streets, gates and Peristyle are free.

Buying bus tickets from the driver. Driver tickets cost double since June 2026. Use the Promet app or a ticket office.

Climbing the bell tower at midday. Go first thing, before the groups.

Posing with costumed "Roman soldiers". They expect money for photos. Agree first or decline.
