Cagliari is an easy port to do on your own. Ships dock at Molo Rinascita, and a free shuttle drops you at the edge of the lower town. The bus hub, the railway station and the arcades of Via Roma are all within a few minutes of the drop-off. The day is a choice between Castello on its hill, Poetto beach by city bus, or the ruins at Nora.

Getting from Cagliari cruise port to the city
The terminal sits inside a port security area. You cannot walk out of it. Take the free shuttle to the port gate near Piazza Matteotti. The exact drop-off point can vary, so follow the ship's announcement.
Piazza Matteotti has the railway station, the CTM city-bus hub and the CTM Point ticket office. The Marina district is across Via Roma, and it is flat.
Castello sits on a hill. Allow 10–20 minutes uphill on steep streets and steps. Either follow Viale Regina Margherita to Piazza Costituzione and climb the Bastione di Saint Remy staircase, or go up through the Marina lanes. A panoramic lift at the Bastione is an alternative to the stairs.

What to do in Cagliari on a cruise stop
Castello quarter (free to walk)
The walled hilltop quarter, fortified under Pisan rule in the 13th century, with narrow lanes, palaces and views on three sides. Allow 2–3 hours with the cathedral and museum. Go up early before the heat. See the Torre dell'Elefante and Torre di San Pancrazio from outside; San Pancrazio is listed as not open to visitors.
Bastione di Saint Remy and Terrazza Umberto I (free)
The limestone terrace and staircase built between 1896 and 1902 over 16th-century Spanish bastions. It links the lower town with Castello and has the best view in the city. Allow 30 minutes. Start from Piazza Costituzione.
Cathedral of Santa Maria
Castello's cathedral on Piazza Palazzo. The crypt below, opened in 1618, holds 192 niches with relics of Cagliari martyrs. Allow 45 minutes. Check entry on the day, cover shoulders and knees, and expect services to take priority.
National Archaeological Museum (€10)
Sardinia's main archaeological collection, from prehistory to the Roman period, at the north end of Castello. €10 full, €5 reduced (2026). Allow 1–1.5 hours. Check hours on the museum's official site before you go.
Poetto beach (€1.30 bus)
About 7 km of sand running from the Sella del Diavolo headland towards Quartu. Take CTM bus PF or PQ from Piazza Matteotti; allow 30 minutes each way. The Cagliari end near the Sella del Diavolo is closest by bus. A seasonal Poetto Express also runs in summer.
Buy tickets before boarding: at tobacconists, newsstands, the CTM Point in Piazza Matteotti (open 08:30–18:30 daily, with a 24-hour machine) or in the CTM BusFinder app. Buying on board costs €0.50 more and is not always possible.
Via Roma and the Marina (free)
The arcaded waterfront avenue opposite the port and the grid of lanes behind it, full of trattorias. It sits next to the port gate, so it suits the last hour before the shuttle.
Nora (€10)
A Phoenician and later Roman city on a promontory near Pula, about 40 minutes by road each way. Entry €10 full, €6 reduced. Public transport is not practical in a port day: use a ship excursion, a pre-booked taxi or a hire car.

Cruise excursion vs independent at Cagliari
Ship excursion prices vary by line, so check your cruise planner.
| Ship excursion | Independent (2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Old town walk | Varies by line | Free after the free shuttle |
| National Archaeological Museum | Varies by line | €10 full, €5 reduced |
| Poetto beach | Varies by line | €3.30 24-hour ticket, or €2.60 for two singles |
| Nora | Varies by line | €10 entry plus taxi or hire car |
Cagliari itself does not need an excursion. A ship tour is worth it for Nora unless you are happy to arrange a taxi or hire car. It also makes sense if you will struggle with Castello's slopes in summer heat.
Ship-safe return timing for Cagliari
The rule: be at the shuttle stop near Piazza Matteotti 90 minutes before all-aboard. From Poetto, board a bus back 2 hours 15 minutes before all-aboard (15:15 for 17:30). From Castello, allow 20 minutes to walk down.
The shuttle ride is short but the queue is not, especially on multi-ship days. On 28 October 2026, four ships and about 12,000 passengers are expected.
| All-aboard | Leave Castello | Bus back from Poetto | At shuttle stop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 17:00 | 15:10 | 14:45 | 15:30 |
| 17:30 | 15:40 | 15:15 | 16:00 |
| 18:00 | 16:10 | 15:45 | 16:30 |
| 19:00 | 17:10 | 16:45 | 17:30 |
Beach note: if a bus does not come, take a taxi from Poetto to the port gate and tell the driver which ship you are on. Do not try to walk into the port area past the gate; it is a security zone.
