How many people miss their cruise ship each year?

Nobody publishes a reliable number. We looked for an official count from cruise lines, port authorities and industry bodies and did not find one. Figures that circulate online, such as "4,000 to 5,000 a year", come with no traceable source. We used to quote that range. We no longer do.

What is documented is the cruise line's position. Royal Caribbean, for example, says that if one of its own shore excursions is delayed, the ship will wait. It also says the ship "will not wait for any guest faring on their own".

That is the risk worth planning around, whatever the true number is.

Which port days carry more risk

We cannot rank ports by missed-ship incidents, because that data is not published. We can rank them by how much can go wrong on the way back. The leave-by times below come from our checked port guides and assume a 17:30 all-aboard.

PortWhy the return is fragileLeave-by for 17:30 all-aboard
Florence (from Livorno)Train 70–90 min, then bus or taxi and the port shuttleOn a train out of Santa Maria Novella by 14:00
Rome (Civitavecchia)Port is about 70 km from Rome; FL5 train 50–60 min, then a 15–20 min walk and the shuttleOn a train leaving Roma San Pietro by 14:30
Pompeii (from Naples)Circumvesuviana about 35 min, trains every 30 min, strikes and breakdowns not rareOn a train back by 14:30
SantoriniTender port; the cable car moves about 600 people an hour downhill and the line can take an hour or moreAt the top cable car station in Fira by 15:00; leave Oia by 14:00
Athens (Piraeus)Metro about 20 min, then 15–30 min on foot to the terminal; strikes are regularOn a metro by 14:45 (Terminal A) or 14:30 (Terminals B and C)
MykonosSea Bus about every 30 min, or a tender with an afternoon queueAt the Sea Bus or tender pier by 16:00
DubrovnikOne road back to Gruž; summer traffic and full busesLeave Pile Gate by 15:45
KotorTender queues build in the last two hoursAt the tender pier by 16:00 (gangway by 16:30 if docked)
BarcelonaCruise Bus is 10 min, but the queue adds 20–30 min on busy daysAt the Cruise Bus stop by the World Trade Center by 16:15
VallettaUpper Barrakka lift queue, then a 10–15 min walkIn the lift queue at the top by 16:00
SplitWalking port; outer breakwater berths are 15–20 min awayLeave the Riva by 16:00 (breakwater) or 16:15 (inner quays)

The pattern is clear. Ports that depend on a train or a tender need hours, not minutes. Walk-off ports need far less.

Why it happens

Treating all-aboard as the target

All-aboard is the deadline, not the plan. If you aim to arrive at all-aboard, any delay makes you late. Your target is the port's leave-by time, which is earlier.

One leave-by rule for every port

A fixed "90 minutes" is too much in Split and not enough in Rome. Our Rome guide has you on a train three hours before all-aboard. Our Split guide has you on board 60 minutes before. Look up the rule for the port you are in.

The group effect

"Five more minutes" said by four people is twenty minutes. Agree the leave-by time before you go ashore, and set it as an alarm on more than one phone.

Confusing a ship tour with a third-party tour

The waiting guarantee applies to tours booked through the cruise line. Royal Caribbean's wording is typical. A tour booked with a local operator, however good, is independent travel as far as the ship is concerned. Policies vary by line, so check yours.

Assuming last time will repeat

A port you know can behave differently on a busy day. Santorini's guide says to be at the cable car earlier if four or more ships are in. Barcelona's shuttle queue grows when four or more ships are in.

What happens if you miss your ship

  1. ·The ship leaves. Independent travellers are not waited for.
  2. ·Call the port agent. The number is in your daily programme. Call as soon as you know you will be late, not after the ship has gone.
  3. ·You get yourself to the next port. Royal Caribbean's FAQ, written for guests who miss embarkation, says "You may be responsible for any expense incurred to meet the ship at its next port of call." Expect to pay for transport and possibly a night's accommodation yourself.
  4. ·Check your insurance wording. Cover varies. The Post Office's cruise policy, for example, lists a car breakdown, a cancelled train or a lost passport as missed-departure triggers. Read what your own policy covers before you sail, and keep every receipt.

The system that prevents it

Step 1: Find your all-aboard time in the daily programme. Write it down.

Step 2: Look up the leave-by rule for that port. It is different everywhere: three hours before all-aboard on a Rome train, 2.5 hours at the Santorini cable car, 1 hour 45 minutes from Dubrovnik's Pile Gate.

Step 3: Set a phone alarm for that time before you leave the ship.

Step 4: When the alarm goes off, you leave.

Frequently asked questions

How common is it to miss a cruise ship? There is no published figure. We could not find an official count from cruise lines or port authorities.

Will the cruise ship leave without me? If you are travelling independently, yes. Royal Caribbean states that the ship will not wait for guests "faring on their own".

Does the ship wait for its own excursions? Royal Caribbean guarantees that the ship will wait if one of its tours is delayed, and that if it cannot wait it will arrange your return at no cost. Other lines have their own policies.

What should I do if I am running late? Call the port agent number in your daily programme straight away, and switch to the port's fallback route. In Rome that is the next FL5. In Barcelona it is a taxi from the rank by the Columbus Monument.

Who pays if I miss the ship? Usually you do. Check your insurance wording before the cruise.
