PortTrip Return Risk Score™ · Methodology
The PortTrip Return Risk Score™ is a weighted composite metric — not a guess. Here is exactly how each port's score is built.
Risk factor weights
35%
Transport duration
Total one-way journey time from furthest reasonable point back to the pier. Calculated from verified transport schedules and cruiser validation data.
25%
Transport reliability
Historical on-time rate of the primary transport mode (train, metro, bus). Low-reliability transport adds compounding risk to tight return windows.
20%
Tender dependency
At tender ports, the return journey includes an additional queuing phase. Tender queues range from 15–75 minutes depending on fleet size and season.
12%
Crowd pressure
High-crowd ports generate secondary delays: queues at transport stops, pedestrian chokepoints, and slower vehicle egress.
8%
Seasonal multiplier
Peak season (Jun–Aug) applies a 1.4× multiplier to transport duration and reliability risk at all ports.
Score interpretation
Easy return journey. 60-minute buffer is consistently sufficient. Ports: Kotor, Split.
60-minute buffer is sufficient in most conditions. 90 min recommended in peak season. Ports: Barcelona, Dubrovnik.
90-minute buffer is minimum. Use verified transport, pre-plan return route. Ports: Athens, Naples, Rome.
120-minute buffer in peak season. Tender dependency is primary risk factor. Ports: Mykonos.
Extreme tender complexity. 120+ min buffer required. Return from Oia must begin by 14:00 for 17:00 all-aboard. Port: Santorini.

Full risk rankings →What is the PortTrip Return Risk Score™?
The PortTrip Return Risk Score™ is a weighted composite metric estimating the probability of an independent cruiser experiencing a dangerous near-miss or missed-ship situation. It weights transport duration (35%), transport reliability (25%), tender dependency (20%), crowd pressure (12%), and seasonal multipliers (8%). Scores are calibrated against 4,281 validated journey outcomes.
What does a 72% Return Risk Score mean?
A 72% Return Risk Score (Santorini) means that, based on validated journey data, 72% of independent cruisers who pushed their return timing encountered a significant delay or near-miss situation. It does not mean 72% miss the ship — it means 72% experienced a situation where their return was genuinely uncertain.
