Quick Answer

Split and Valletta are the easiest Mediterranean ports to do without an excursion: you walk from the ship into the old town. Kotor is just as close, but large ships tender there, which adds time each way. Dubrovnik, Athens and Lisbon follow, each with cheap, simple transport.

How this ranking works

This ranking answers one question: how easy is it to have a good day without booking a ship excursion?

  1. ·Transport: how easy is it to get from the ship to the main sight?
  2. ·Return risk: how much can go wrong on the way back?
  3. ·First-timer friendliness: can someone with no local knowledge do it?
  4. ·DIY cost: what the day costs on your own, from our checked guides.

Ship excursion prices vary by line, so compare these DIY costs with your own cruise planner. Leave-by times assume a 17:30 all-aboard unless stated.

Tier 1: Walk off and explore

1. Split, Croatia

Transport: 5–20 min on foot round the harbour to the Riva Typical DIY day: about €22 Leave by: the Riva by 16:00 from the breakwater berths, 16:15 from the inner quays

Walk along the harbour to the Riva and enter Diocletian's Palace through the Bronze Gate. The palace streets, gates and Peristyle are free and open 24 hours. The cellars cost €10. Cathedral and bell tower combinations are reported at about €7–15, and Jupiter's Temple is €4.

Watch out for: paying for a palace "entry" ticket. The streets are free. Some ships tender when berths are full, and the far end of the breakwater is 20 minutes from town.

2. Valletta, Malta

Transport: 10–15 min walk along the Waterfront, then the Upper Barrakka lift (€1) Typical DIY day: about €25 Leave by: in the queue at the top of the lift by 16:00

The lift takes you up to Upper Barrakka Gardens (free), with the Saluting Battery firing at 12:00 and 16:00, Monday to Saturday. St John's Co-Cathedral is €15 and closed on Sundays and public holidays. The Three Cities ferry costs about €2.80 return. Mdina is about 30 minutes by bus (€2–2.50 each way), but only on a call of 8 hours or more.

Watch out for: walking up the hill at midday. Use the lift. No stiletto heels or large bags at St John's.

3. Kotor, Montenegro

Transport: 2–5 min on foot from the pier to the Sea Gate Typical DIY day: about €20 Leave by: the tender pier by 16:00; back at the gangway by 16:30 if docked

Kotor has one main quay. Larger ships, and any ship that cannot get the berth, tender to a pier opposite the Sea Gate. The old town is free. San Giovanni Fortress and the city walls cost €15, cash. The Cathedral of St Tryphon is €4. Perast is €2 each way by bus.

Watch out for: tender queues. The process adds 30–60 minutes each way, and the last two hours before all-aboard are the busiest. Climb the fortress before 09:00 or after 16:00 in summer: there is no shade.

Tier 2: Simple transport

4. Dubrovnik, Croatia

Transport: Libertas bus 1A or 1B, €2.50 on board, 15–20 min to Pile Gate Typical DIY day: about €45 Leave by: Pile Gate by 15:45

From Pile Gate the old town is on foot. The City Walls cost €40 and include Fort Lovrijenac. Stradun and the squares are free.

Watch out for: starting the walls at midday in July. Be on them by 09:00 or after 15:00. In summer, full buses pass the Pile stop on the way back, so leave in good time.

5. Athens, Greece

Transport: walk to the metro (15 min from Terminal A, 30 min from B and C), then €1.20 for 90 min; about 17–20 min to Monastiraki Typical DIY day: about €54 with a day ticket, the Acropolis and the Acropolis Museum Leave by: on the metro by 14:45 (Terminal A) or 14:30 (Terminals B and C)

Book an Acropolis slot (€30) on the official Hellenic Heritage site before the cruise. The Acropolis Museum is €20. The Ancient Agora (€20) is close to Thissio and Monastiraki stations.

Watch out for: strikes. Metro and bus strikes are regular. Check the evening before and keep the ship's tour as a fallback.

6. Lisbon, Portugal

Transport: 14 min flat walk from Jardim do Tabaco to Praça do Comércio; tram 15E to Belém, €3.30 on board, about 38 min Typical DIY day: about €43 Leave by: Belém by 15:15; Alfama or the Baixa by 16:00

Alfama is directly behind the terminal and free to walk. Castelo de São Jorge is €17. Jerónimos Monastery is €18, closed on Mondays, with timed slots. A €7.25 24-hour tram and metro ticket on a €0.50 card pays off after three tram rides.

Watch out for: the tram 28 queue at Martim Moniz. Board mid-route instead. The Santa Justa lift and the funiculars were closed as of September 2026.

Tier 3: Worth the logistics

7. Naples, Italy

Transport: walk to the old town (10–20 min); for Pompeii, the Circumvesuviana, €3.30 one way, about 35 min from Garibaldi Typical DIY day: about €27 for Pompeii; Naples old town is free on foot Leave by: on a train back from Pompeii by 14:30; from the old town, start walking 75 min before all-aboard

Pompeii is €20 basic. Tickets are named and sold only through the official site. Get off at Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri, not Pompei Santuario. Trains run about every 30 minutes and can be cancelled.

8. Barcelona, Spain

Transport: Cruise Bus (T3), €3.50 one way or €5 return, about 10 min Typical DIY day: about €37 Leave by: at the Cruise Bus stop by 16:15

Sagrada Família is €26 and must be booked online. The Gothic Quarter is free. The Cruise Bus takes cards only, and afternoon queues build on multi-ship days.

9. Venice, Italy

Transport: People Mover €1.50, then vaporetto €9.50 for 75 min; 45–60 min from Marittima to St Mark's Typical DIY day: about €64 Leave by: St Mark's 2 hours before all-aboard from Marittima or San Basilio

The Grand Canal on vaporetto line 1 is the slow, scenic route. St Mark's Basilica (€10) and the Doge's Palace (€35, or €30 online 30+ days ahead) need timed slots. Check your berth: Marghera and Fusina add a shuttle and a longer return.

10. Rome, Italy

Transport: free shuttle, 15–20 min walk, then FL5 train, €4.60 to San Pietro (50–60 min) or €5 to Termini (75–85 min) Typical DIY day: about €34 Leave by: on a train out of Rome 3 hours before all-aboard (15:30 from San Pietro for 18:30)

Book the Colosseum (€18 plus booking fee) when slots open 30 days ahead. Tickets are in your name. With two train journeys you have four to five hours in Rome, so pick one area.
