Emergency guidance · what to do now
The ship will sail without you.
This is the hard reality. Cruise ships operate on strict port schedules with berth reservations and pilotage windows. They will not wait for independent travellers beyond the all-aboard time. If you are already late, call the ship immediately — the next steps are below.
Call the ship's emergency number — now
The number is on your cruise card and in the cruise line app. If the ship is still in port, a call may hold departure by minutes. Do not wait.
Take a taxi directly to the port
Do not wait for buses or public transport. A taxi to the port costs €15–50 in most Mediterranean ports and may get you there in time.
Go to the port agent office if the ship has left
Every cruise line has a port agent in every major port. They are your contact point for reaching the next destination. Ask port authority staff for their location.
Book travel to the next port immediately
Check your cruise itinerary for the next port. Book flights or fast transport immediately — delay makes everything more expensive. Use Google Flights or a travel agent at the port.
Contact your travel insurance
File a missed departure claim as soon as possible. Keep receipts for everything — accommodation, transport, meals. Some policies cover these costs.
Emergency flight to next port
€150–600
One or two nights accommodation
€80–200/night
Ground transfers at both ends
€40–100
Missed boarding fee (some lines)
€0–150
Total typical cost
€400–1,800+
The 90-minute buffer rule: Plan to be at the port terminal 90 minutes before all-aboard. Not in the city. Not on the bus. At the terminal.
For tender ports, add 45 minutes: Santorini and Mykonos queues run 35–50 minutes each way in peak season. This is not optional buffer — it is required timing.
Know the taxi fallback price: Before leaving the ship each morning, know the taxi cost and time to the port. This is your emergency route if everything else fails.
Set a departure alarm from your furthest point: With transport time and buffer already calculated. Not a reminder to "start heading back" — a specific alarm for the moment to leave.
What happens if you miss your cruise ship?
The ship sails without you. You are responsible for your own travel to the next port at your own cost. Contact the cruise line port agent immediately — they have a local representative in every port who can advise on reaching the next destination. You will need to self-fund flights, accommodation, and transfers.
Will the cruise ship wait for you if you are late?
No — unless you are on a ship-organised excursion that has been delayed (in which case the ship will wait for the group). The ship will not wait for independent travellers. All-aboard time is the hard deadline.
How much does it cost to rejoin a cruise ship after missing it?
Budget €400–1,800+ to rejoin at the next port. This includes emergency flights, one or two nights of accommodation, ground transfers, and administrative costs. The next port may be in a different country. Travel insurance with missed departure cover is essential.
Who do you contact if you miss your cruise ship?
Call the ship's emergency number (on your cruise card) immediately. Contact the cruise line's port agent (they have an office in every major cruise port). If you cannot reach either, go to the port authority office — they can contact the ship on your behalf before it leaves.
