First-Time Cruiser Guide
No fluff. No "enjoy the local culture" advice. This is the tactical guide experienced cruisers wish someone had given them before their first port day.
The Ship-Safe Rule
Always be back at the port 90 minutes before all-aboard time. Not 30 minutes. Not 60 minutes. 90 minutes. Add 30 more for tender ports.

Myth: "I can't get scammed, I'm only there for a day." Port areas attract experienced pickpockets specifically because of cruise tourist traffic.

Common First-Time Questions
What is the most important thing to know for a first cruise port day?
Build your day backwards from all-aboard time, not forwards. Subtract 90 minutes minimum for your return buffer, then subtract actual transport time. That leaves your real shore time.
Should first-time cruisers book ship excursions?
Not necessarily. Most Mediterranean ports have easy public transport. Ship excursions cost 200-400% more than DIY for the same experience. The exception: tender ports in bad weather, where the ship controls your return.
How much money should I bring for a cruise port day?
Budget €25–€45 for a mid-range independent day (public transport, local lunch, one attraction). Always carry an emergency €30–€50 in cash for a taxi back if you run late.
What happens if I miss my cruise ship?
Call the port agent immediately — their number is in your daily programme. The cruise line has a procedure for this. You are not abandoned. They will assist you in reaching the next port.
What is a tender port and why does it matter?
At tender ports, you take a small boat from the ship to shore (and back). This adds 20-30 minutes each way and means you must queue for the return tender. Add at least 30 extra minutes to your return buffer.
