Quick answer: Ship excursion prices vary by cruise line and change by season, so the only reliable figure is the one in your own cruise planner. A DIY day with transport and the main paid sight costs about €20–€65 per person at the ports below. Rome by train costs €9.20–€10 return. Naples to Pompeii by Circumvesuviana costs €6.60 return.
What you are paying for on a ship excursion
Ship tours usually bundle three things:
- ·A coach transfer to and from the port
- ·A guide
- ·Entry to the main sight, on some tours
The one thing you cannot buy elsewhere is the ship's own return promise. If the ship's coach is late, the ship waits. If you are on your own and late, it does not.
Check the inclusions list before you book. Some tours include site entry and some do not.

Where the ship's coach earns its price
A ship tour is worth considering when:
- ·There is a strike. Rail and metro strikes are regular in Italy and Greece. Do not go independently on a strike day in Rome, Naples or Athens.
- ·The journey is long. Florence is 70–90 minutes each way by train. Rome is 50–85 minutes. A delay eats straight into your margin.
- ·You struggle with stairs or heat. Pompeii has little shade. Station stairs, metro platforms and Santorini's steps add up.
- ·You want two far-apart sights. Pompeii and Vesuvius together, or Cape Sounion and the Corinth Canal, are hard to do by public transport in one call.
- ·The official tickets are sold out. Acropolis, Colosseum and Sagrada Família slots sell out in summer.
Where DIY is easy
- ·Barcelona: the Cruise Bus takes about 10 minutes to the World Trade Center stop.
- ·Athens: the metro reaches Monastiraki in about 17–20 minutes once you have walked from the terminal.
- ·Naples: the old town is 10–20 minutes on foot from the cruise terminal.
- ·Dubrovnik: bus 1A or 1B reaches Pile Gate in 15–20 minutes.
- ·Kotor, Split and Valletta: the old town starts within walking distance of where you come ashore.
Book entry tickets on the official sites
Most of the queue-skipping value of a tour comes from a pre-booked slot, which you can buy yourself:
- ·Colosseum: timed slots released 30 days ahead, tickets in your name
- ·Pompeii: named tickets, only from the official seller via pompeiisites.org, capped at 20,000 a day in season
- ·Acropolis: timed slots on the official Hellenic Heritage site
- ·Sagrada Família and Park Güell: timed tickets online
- ·St Mark's Basilica: timed slot on tickets.basilicasanmarco.it
Touts outside these sites sell marked-up or invalid tickets. Buy from the official seller.

Frequently asked questions
How much should I budget for a DIY port day? From our checked guides, about €20 in Kotor up to about €64 in Venice per person, covering transport and the main paid sight. Add food.
Are cruise excursion prices negotiable? No. They are set by the cruise line. Prices vary by line, so compare tours in your own planner.
Do cruise excursions include entry fees? It depends on the tour. Read the inclusions list. "Guided walk around the Colosseum area" is not the same as entry to the Colosseum.
What is the cheapest way to see cruise ports? Walk where you can and use public transport where you cannot. Plan the return first, using the leave-by rule in each port guide.
What is the biggest risk of going on my own? Missing the ship. It will not wait for independent passengers, and reaching the next port is your problem. Follow the port's leave-by rule and keep the port agent's number in your phone.
